RA1LROAR HATTERS. —The opening of the new St. Louis and Chicago route via the St. Louis, Taodalla and Terre ilaute Road to Efflnghom, and thence by the Illinois Central, was formally celebrated on Saturday by an excursion of a large party of merchants and bnsiness men or St. Louis. Two passenger and two freight trains daily will run on the route.— Terre Haute Express. —The Nashville Press, and Times says: “Oeneral N. B. Forrest Is now devoting bis attention to the work of constructing the Selma, Marlon and Mempnis Railroad, of which he is President. He has undergone a considerable change of mind lately In regard to the ‘Yankee.’ In fact, he is now trying to induce a Yankee colony to settle on ten thousand acres of land, on both sides of the Rnttahatcbie, not far from Grenada, Mississippi, on the line of his railroad. He wishes to build at that place car shops rolling mills, factories, machine shops, etc.” Tkkhiiu.k Accident.—Benjaman, F. Sloan, a hrakeman on the T., W. A W. R. K., was instantly killed and horribly mamrleii, this morning, while switching at the YVea station, seven miles below town. The train accidentally became uncoupled, and the unfortunate man was by some moans thrown from the cars upon the track, when eighteen cars passed over his body, instantly killing him, and cutting and mangling the body horribly. A coroner’s jury was held over the remains this forenoon, which rendered a verdict In accordance with the above facts.—L«Jayeite Dispatch. Kwlhoad KoKCTioJta.—fn Tippecmoe county Die appropriation for the Muncle, Lafayette Shd Bloomington railroad carried by the following vote: For, 3,i£j; against, 2,575: majority, 748. In Tipton county the vote was more than two to one fer the tax for the same
road.
Benton county gave a

In Clinton county there was a majority of from 800 to 1,000 for a tax of |100,000 for all the roads—the Muncle and Bloomington, the Crowfordsvltle and Logansport, and the Indianapolis, Delphi and Chicago. Look Oi;t koii Railroad Accidents About Thskb Timxh,—Reporters of rall-

majority of 436 tax (f4X,U00) for
road accidents will probably have plenty of business the next few weeks. The three great lines to the West, the Pennsylvania Central, the Erie and the New York Central, purpose running trains through to Chicago in thirty hours, including stods. As the distance by the first named line is 899 miles, by the second 980, and by the third 98’ it will be seen that an average speed will have to be kept up, while the train is in motion of confttderable more than thirty miles an hour. On the thoroughly well built roads of England, with their light oars and engines, such a rate is safe enough; but we tremble for the consequences when we think of our uneven tracks, ■harp earves and forty tun locomotives. It ie, however, probable that the wear and tear of thie high speed will prove so enormous as soon to force a return to the ■lower but Baffer pace heretofore followed.—iVew York Sun. —A Detroit Inventor has contrived an Improved alarm bell for looomotlvea. Tbe Invention consists of an ordinary bell weighing about one hundred pounds, placed en tbe platform of tbe looomotive immediately over the oow-cetcher. A rod attached to the eccentric shaft causes e clapper to strike tbe bell at each torn of the driving wheel, in tbe same manner that an indlcater enumerates tbe revolutions of a wheel or registers the number of sheets thrown off a prlDtlug preas. The bell is suspended loosely, and revolves from the force ot tbe stroke it receives, so that all parts of its surface are equally exposed to wear. The advantages of this arrangement are a continuous sound, slow or rapid in proportion to the speed of tbe engine, each fifteen feet prodnclng a stroke of tbe bell. In case of accident the railroad company can always prove that the bell was ringing according to law, that being the most difficult to convince a jury, and the one wtich railroads have the greatest difficulty In proving. Owing to the position In which this bell is placed—In front of the engine and about three feet from the ground—tbe Bound oan be distinctly beard about three miles In the day time, and by night four miles or more, tbe ground and the eontlnuous rail, both excellent conductors of sound, assisting in carrying the vibra-
tions.

Brown County Railroad Mkrtiro. The railroad meeting of Brown eounty, Indiana, met at the court house in the town of Nashville, on Hatnrday, Angnst 28.1802, pursuant to adjournment, with Colonel James 8. Hester lu tbe chair, and K cfdoM^HeSerauted 7 the meeting to order at one o'clock t. M. The Committee on Correepoadenee submitted their report. Among others a eommonlcatlon was received from the Springfield, Effingham and Southeastern Railroad of Illinois, suggesting sn extension of their tom east, from the Wabash at Merom, via Sullivan, Worthington, Bloomington, Nashville. Columbus and Oreenaburg, for the Eastern outlet, and aektng a survey from the Wabash on tbe above route, and showing that sakl route wae a straight through line from Greensburg, Columbus, Nashville. Bloomington, Worthington and Sullivan, Indiana, :h Effingham and Vandalla. Illinois, to St. Louis. And that ssldcom-

pany had had interviews with other oompantes, and that the above route bad been
suggested ns the best.
On motion of E. Colley, the Committee on Correspondence wee Instructed to correspond with Mr. J. P. M. Howard, Pres-
ident of said road, at once.
Colonel Hester now addressed the meeting at length, argning that nothing eould be done toward getting an election for or against taxation nntil a railroad organ!ration was effected, and if » company waa organized, and tbe counties alon; said route would guarantee a tax to aid in the building of said road, then Eastern capitalists would be willing at once to step forward and take the amount so levied by taxation and complete the road, and suggested that steps be at once taken
effecting of an organization. mot,<>n r 1 J ?hn L. Drew. •
