It ht the spinning of tbe moon in her appointed orbit from east to west, at the rate of forty miles a minuie, that occasions the necessity for the following of this particular track across the the continent; while It is the time consumed by her in traveling that abort segment of her course, which limits the career of the eclipse to a length of a little more than sixiy-aix hundred miiee, The width of the track thus traversed will be ooe hundred and forty miles, and the phenomenon ia to be witnessed In its perfection only in the line of total phaae. On the notbern side of that track will be seen but n partial eclipse of the sun’s southern limb, while on the sonthern side will be seen a similar obscuration of ite northern limb. It la no jaat, therefore, to speak of "going to the eclipse," for our astronomers are now accustomed to take their instruments to some desirable point of observation along the coarse of Us coming, and there note every detail of the phenomenon With soientiflo accuracy and minntoneee. Within seventy miles of the center of the eclipse’s track, the solar dlse Will, for a single instant, be totally obscured, hat directly in the middle of Its path the duration of the eclipse will vary from two minute# nod twenty-three seconds to three minutes end iorty-seven seconds. tbe light Heelf. A variety of instrnments are now employed for the pnrpoee of making observations, ard tbe record is one of anlversai interest when presented. There haye likewise been noted certain rather remarkable phaees of tbe moon as her form panned across tbe face of the sun, which men of science are eager to verify and explain. In wltneaaing modern eclipses, and this one in partionUr, tbe barometer, thermometer, and hygrometer will be need, to ascertain the atmospheric effects of the phenomenon. Tbe Pierce party, which baa gone to the Northwest to note tbe characteristics of the event, are to bring back with them soeb photographs of the scene as its brief duration will enable Mr, Blank to take with hie instruments. Stray planets are also to be looked up daring tbe san's convenient obscuration, in particular that or those within the orbit of Mercury. On the whole, an amazingly email pinch ot time is given by tbe busy heavenly bodies for tbe most dexterous astronomers to harry mp their observations, and even for that they are all sincerely grateful, as tbe world should be to thsm in tarn.—ifogfoa Poat. m i m — ftt Mr J. Ue represents Stokes as privately condnotlng his canvass In a manner peculiarly offensive to all Northern men, Whom be denounces aa carpet-baggers, and threatens to drlv* out of the State. These men comprise tbe ruling element of the liberal Hadioal wing, and are nearly all exFederal soldiers, if r. Stokes having always pitted himself nnsooeessfully against Brownlow for his positions as Governor sod Senator, It Is pnite natural the Parson has no groat amount of interest in his suoceas. During tbe whole of yesterday rumors were In circulation that tbe negroes were very macb excited and deflaut, threatening to burn the Dttmooratic candidate for Congress in effigy. freight dne by the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation company ia among tbe first movement* made by that company with it* associates to compete on any considerable and effective seals witb tbe existing through lines to tbe west. Tbe ‘'Unitea Companies” of New Jersey propose also to offer a spirited competition to tbe Erie, tb* Hudson River, aud tne New Jersey Central Railroad Companies, lor the carrying of paaaengera from ail point* south and west of Cleveland. Among tbe mean* by which they expect to compete successfully for both freight and passengers ia tbe new terminus which they are about to coirttruct in Jersey City, with a new track leading direct from the Bergen cut tnrough the northerly part or tbe city to the site selected, rkie ■pot, Harsineua Cove, now covered with shallow water, aud need aa a harbor for rafta, canal boats, aad vessels of small capacity, will be tbe geeae of the extensive operations that are aooa to be commenced by the companies. Tbe tendency to consolidate cepe rate links of railroad into ieag chains has, within a taw year* past, aroused the New Jersey companies to a aanaa of the danger ot haring other roads taka from them their ■hare ol the traffic converging to New York. An agreement wae accordingly made with tbe Penoeylvania Railroad company by which paaaengera and freight may be transported from tb* weet By a route mo direst ae to present advantages to traveler* and shipper* equal to those offered by the lines which have hitherto monopolized the trade. The first result ef tne arrangement with the Pennsylvania road waa the construction of the “Connecting Railways,” at seostof over *2,000,000, at Philadelphia, by which travelers now paae to Washington without change. Othay advantages to tbe road have followed, and are expected to follow. The ararangementa for shipment of freight without breaking bulk have beea completed, sod a large share of the passenger traffic from Cincinnati and other points iu ite latitude has bean obtained. It is to make room for this increasing business that the new tenninasin Jersey City is to be erectad. Tbo company purchased for this terminus, seventy acres ot land below high water lying on the shore front between South (Second and South Seventh streets. Th* property trout# 1,8UU feet on tbe Hudson River, and extends inland from the Bulkhead about 2,500 feet. Besides the purchased site, tbe right ot extending pier* 600 feet into tbe river waa also secured. Tbe lands were purchased from the State. The aale by the Legislature excited a great deal of public cumafem, aud tbe question whether tbe state possessed the right to dispose of the property and whether u does poeeee* any proprietorship of laud* under water, » sQU tbe vexed question of New Jersey politics. The court# qf the Stale decided, several years ago, that tbe lands below (ugh water mark belonged to the Bute; but It waa generally understood that this waa a mere theoretic ownership, really in trust for tbe public and tbe owner of tbe adjacent shore. Consistently with this un-
derstanding, the Legisl*lur*,in 1851, pane ed an act by which tbe riparian ownei could, after passing through certain for

Tba most expensive luxury indulged in by the people, says tbe New York Cbvtmcrcial, is playing “gentleman farmers. ” Never before were ao many rural homes for sale, aa during this spring and summer.
