It appears that no less than fortyeight dogs were incarcerated in the pound, which ia a small enclosure in the corner of a livery stable. During the night, the dogs in their thirst, hanger, and frenzy to get released, fell to devouring each other. The fight soon became general, and all the canines, ranging from the bull dog to the poodle and lap dog, joined in the “chaw up.” What was left of the dogs on Saturday, after this terrific fight, was duly exterminated by the keepers of the pound. If the rounds could be reported in that night’s battle between the dogs, it would furnish a thrilling column of “sporting news.’'
Wo dropped in at the Surgical Institute
recreation about noon on Saturday, and found Dr.
Allen and hie aaaietanta busily engaged in making preparations for an operation in surgery of no email magnitude. The operation consisted in the removal of a tumor of sixteen years’ standing, from tha aids of a woman fifty years of age.. Tha patient waa first placed under tbe influence of a powerful anwethetlc compound of other and chloroform, after which tbe operation waa anoceaafully performed by Dr. Allen in lees than on# minute. Tbe tumor, when exposed on the person, was about twenty inches in length, and after ita removal was. found to bs forty inches in circa inference, and weighed near thirty-five pounds. After tha blood waa discharged from it, it weighed fifteen pounds, and filled a tan
quart dish pan.
When tbs patient recovered from her lethargic state, she said she felt greatly relieved, and proud as n queen at having got rid of bar terrible burthen. Her application to Dr. Allen was made abont a week ago, after aha had spent all bar means in visiting, and endeavoring to obtain relief from n number of eminent practitioners throughout the country, non# of whom gave bar any encouragement that her could oneoeosfully be operated on, Dr. Alloa, after examining ta tumor, undertook the responsibility of performing tha operation, and did so, without any expectancy of a pecuniary reward from hla patient. Last evening she was doing well, nod mid she felt in better spirits than eh# had for the past tan yeara. eembled to witness tha operation, among whom wars Dr. Barnes, of this city. Dr. Hall, of Franklin, and Dr. Robbins, of Brooklyn, Indiana. During the half hour we wore at tha Institute, eleven aasea of surgery were performed by Dr. Allen. The firs* operation was on a boy baby, seven weeks old, for bare Up; than followed sight cases of dob feet, the patients all being children, ranging from six months to sight or nine years of age. After these came a case of eontraetad cords of tbe leg, the patient being n man twenty-seven years old, which oas* followed by tha one first mentioned. Since Dr. Allen commenced operations In this city, abont one month ago, he bn performed abont one hundred ■ of surgery, and now has under treatment at tbe Institute, between sixty and seventy patients.
