■ IfUMBBR TEN. TH* CALASDONIA PAP** MIT.T.8. In 1864 Messrs. Oay A Braden entered upon the manufacture of wrapping paper, patting op a large two story frame mill for their purpose, on the west branch of the oanal at the terminus of West Market street. In October, 1866, Mr. Oay sold out hla interest to Mr. E. E. Field. In February, 1868, Mr. James Scanlan bought a one-half interest, the mill was enlarged, new additions made to the machinery and the name of the mill changed from the “White River” to the “Caledonia” Paper Mills, Mr. Scanlan, who was a practical paper maker, taking charge aa Superintendent. Among other improvements, the firm pat up four large bleaching tubs, that hold about two tons of straw each. These tubs were bnilt of fully seasoned ash wood and were iron bound. On the first of last May, while Mr. Scanlan was inspecting them, one ol the tubs burst, and be was scalded to death by the hot liquor it contained. A young man, an employe about the mill, who waa with Mr. Scanlan at the time, waa also scalded to death. Mrs. James Scanlan retains her late husband’s interest in the mill. Shortly after the death of Mr. James Scanlan, his brother, Patrick Scanlan, was pnt In charge of the mill as foreman, which position he still Retains, to the general satisfaction of the owners. On the first of February last Mr. Braden disposed of his fonrth Interest to Mr. Erie Loeke, the mill now being owned by Mrs. James Bosnian, E. S. Field ‘and Erie Locke, Before Mr. James Scanlan took charge, a very inferior article of paper was made at the mill, it being of a dirty brown color and of an uneven llimsoy surface. Since then, owing to the Improved machinery and the better experience brought to bear in its manufacture, the quality of the paper made has gradually Improved, and now stands equal to any made in the States, it having a bard, even polished surface, ranging in color from a very light straw to a dark buff. The articles used in its manufacture are hard woolen rags, gunny bags, old ropes and straw, the last named being the principal material employed, tho consumption of which is about ten tons a week. The mill Is run by means of water power, two turbine wheels—one of ten and one of seventy (estimated) horse power—being used, aud Is run from 1 o'clock Monday morning until 11 o’clock Saturday night of each week, giving employment to twenty-six persons, six of whom are women, turning out about 3,500 pounds of paper every twenty-four hours. The straw used in the manufacture, after being boiled In the bleaching tubs is washed In a large revolving wooden cylinder, the Invention of Mr. James Scanlan, and then paseesa through a series of engines, called pulp beaters, three In number, having a capacity for the manufacture of 650 pounds of paper each run, where with tho .other articles used in the manualacturc, it is thoroughly prepared for the paper machine. Tho paper machine in this mill ia what is called a sixty-two inch cylinder machine, and is furnished with James Scanlan's new Improved patent upright felt, and two stacks of calenders with five rolls in each stack. The entire machine cost about 914,000. The Caledonia Paper Mill has obtained a first class standing among paper dealers in Cincinnati, St. Louis and Louisville, aud the mill Is constantly run to its full capacity to complete orders. The sales for the past year amounting to nearly 975.000. LUMBER AND STAVK TRADE. John Hunte and John Stumph formed a partnership in the lumber basiness in 1864, admitting Mr. William B. Dickson, formerly of Cincinnati, as a partner in February, 1865, the firm taking the style of Bunte, Stumph it Dickson. Gn the first of March following they leased frtmi II. Bales, Esq., a piece of ground fronting on Market street, just esat of tho Union track, on Which they located their lum!>or yard. In May of the same year the firm name was changed to Bunte A Dicitson, Mr. Stumph disposing of his interest to them, and withdrawing from the business. 4*The basiness of Messrs. Bunte A Dickson so increased that they found additional yard room a necessity, and on the first of January, 1868, they leased more ground from Mr. Bates, making their lumber yard cover an area of fonr acres. In May of las* year they leased an sere of ground from the Bellefontaine Railway Company, at the Intersection of the Peru and Bellefontaine tracks, on which they put up a factory for dressing staves, furnishing it with two dressing and one jointing m achines, and one heading find two cut off saws. During the last ten months they have received four hundred and fonr car loads of stave timber in the rough, and have shipped to Cincinnati, Pittsburg, Cleveland and Chicago two hundred and thirty car loads of dressed staves, the market value of whieh was 956.000. Their lumber trade, which Is principally in white and black walnnt, cherry and hard lumber, is rapidly on the increase, as will be seen by the following statement of receipts: Car loads received In 1865 .V. Car loads received in 1866 88 Car loads received in 1867 525 Car loads received In 1868 825 During the same lyears they received elghty-Uiree car loads of shingles. Their shipments of walnut and cherry lumber to points East in 1867, amounted to 100 car loads, and in 1868 to 388 car loads. Their lumber business lor 1868 amounted to 9130,000, the best portion of which, as well as the entire amount of their sales of staves, being drawn from points outside the State. Mosers. Bunte A Dickson have a very large lot of stave timber on hand, and their stock ol walnut, cherry aud other hard lumber in yard will measure 500,000 feet. They expect their trade in walnut liimloer alone during the present year will amount 2,500,000 feet. A force of thirty-five hands aro employed in their lunilier yard and stave factory. Louisvillb, New Albany and Ch:i’AOo JfcAiMtOAP.—Under a decree of Court tills road was sold by the .Sheriff of White county, on the Sili instant, for the nominal snm of 9100,000. It was bid in for the bondholders by their representative, Mr. Schnyler, who stated that all the holders of bonds would be admitted to the full benefit of the reorganization, whether their bond# were In the pool or not. Upon this representation there waa no competing bid made. It ia understood that the new company will put the road in first rate condition throughout its entire length. Tan State Debt.—The Board of State Debt Sinking Fond Commissioners met yesterday, at the office ot the Auditor of State, and determined that there wae on hand, sufficient money to redeem about thirty-five per cent, of the five percent, certificates of State stocks. This amounts to about 9875,006. 'fliere are yet outsteiodlttg 9200,000 of wav loan bonds, which the holders are earnestly requested resent far redemption. The money jor this purpose has been lying in the State treasury for a year or two, but owners teem to think it s good Investment sod refuss to yitid tbs certificates.
fiS- Th the Folios Court yesterday, there was but one ease of drunk and disorderly. ^^The audience at the Academy of Music last night ou the occasion of Mr. Moreland’s benefit, was quite a large one. “Flash of Lightning” was presented in good style, the beneficiary appearing as the steamboat clerk to fine advantage. The performance closed with the “Irish Tutor,” a laughable farce which was. highly enjoyed by the audience. Tonight “Flash of Lightning” will be repeated. Goon Moral Charaizterh.—The Constitution of this State requires that any person practising law, shall be “a person of good moral character.” This requirement is not always complied with; Indeed, few, if any, judges ever think of questioning the character of an applicant for admission to the bar. One of the Judges of this county baa determined, however, that hereafter he will adhere to the rule, commencing^ to enforce it at the beginning of his next term. In doing so, he will be sustained by a majority of the bar, and by the people at large. Too Much Now*.—A rather amnsing scene took place in the Criminal Court, yesterday. During the argument ot an attorney, an old gentleman, who was rather deaf, commenced whispering very loudly to an old friefid. The ba’.itf rapped and called order, but the old gentleman paid no attention, until the official walked over and took him by the arm. The Court then remarked to the visitors, that the room would be at their service In a very few minutes, If they wished to make speeches. Setowd Masuiterade at ttik Rink.— The second Grand Masquerade comes off at the Rink to-night, and will probably be as largely attended as was the first one. The same arrangements which made that one so successful, will be carried out to-night, and no one need fear any of that license which is frequently the accompaniment of Masquerades. Until 10 o’clock roller skating, promenading, velocipede riding and fancy skating will be the order of things, and between ten and twelve o’clock dancing will take place. As additional seata will be provided, there will be ample accommodation for those who merely wish to look on.

Moriuhoe's Opera Hall.—Up to three o’clock yesterday the weather was bright and fair, and for once it seemed as if (be clerk of the weather had smiled upon Prof. PearsHll. Hut tho sky soon clouded over, and before four rain waa falling. Fortunately there wasn’t a great deal of it, but still the clouds looked so threatening, and the prospects for more were so good, we concluded that, for the nobody knows how manyetli time a concert in which Prof.Pearsall was directly interested would fail of success from the bad weather. But such wan not the case. Morrison’s Opera Hall was filled at an early hour, and as far as attendance was concerned there eould be no complaint. As for the concert itself, there has never been an entertainment given here in which so many talented and cultivated musicians, both amateur and professional, took part, and it could have fallen nothing short of the most complete success. It was a great conipUuivnl to Professor Pearsall that tbs whole musical talent of the city united in tendering him such a benefit; and it is a creditable thing Uj the city that it can produce such an array of talent. Those taking part were Professors Hess, Bergstein, Black ami class, Rhodes, Keating, and Choir of .St. Mary's Church; Professors St. Clair and Dr. Loeper, pianist, Harry Lehrriter, Arthur Lietz, tho Beethoven Society and Orchestra, Professor Hess, Director, tho Micnnerchor, Professor Weegman, Director. The programme, which embraced many choice selections, although one or two parts were quite heavy, waa finely rendered, and was received with the greatest satisfaction. Space will not allow us to speak of each performance, and where all were so good, it would be invidious to particulariy.o. During the intermission between the first and second parts, Prof. Pearsall being loudly called for by the audience, appeared, and returned his thanks to the audience for the kindness they had manifested towards him. While he was yet speaking, Mr. J. A. Baker stepped upon the stage, and handing him the following communication, requested him to read it, which be did, as soon as he could command his voice: Indianapolis, April!), 1860.
