Judge Foster, of the Supreme Court ot Massachusetts, hae resigned on account of inadequacy of salary. Five thousand dollars a year does not pay so able a lawyer for abandoning bis practice. We presume If it were to-day proposed to raise the salary of the Judges of the Supreme Court of Illinois, from the pitiftil sum of 91,200 to the Massachusetts figure, we should bear the cry of H extravagance” from scores of demagogues. But the question of adequate awanea, for not only judicial bat State offleere, will be raised la the Constitutional Convention soon to be held; and it is necessary that the public mind should be turned to the subject in time, In order that It may be fortified against the aenseleea screeds of peuedo economy ahrlekers. The salaries fixed by the present constitution twenty-one yean ago, seem now ridiculously small. The pay of the Governor te but 91,600; oftbe Supreme Court Judges, but 91,200; of tbs Circuit Judges, bnt 91,000; of the State Auditor, but 91,000; of the Secretary of State and State Treasurer, but 9800 each—while mein tiers of the Legislature reeeive but 92 per day. Of course these amounts are Increased by many questionable devices. Nobody supposes tbat the recipients of such meagre sums live upon them, or that they draw largely upon their private resources. The Governors pay ia eked out, for inetance, by largely overpaying his gardener and fireman, and that of tha Judges by giving them "docket feea.’’ How memben of the upper and lower bouses of the Legislature supplement their scanty allowance is written in the arcana of the lobby. Let liberal salaries be paid all our public servants. If they are capable to do their duty, they arc entitled to generous compensation. If they are not capatle and faithful, the smallest pay ia too ness. When the Constitutional Convention comes to the subject of salaries and the pay of membera of the Legislature, let it consider that, in thla country olBcaa are not held generally by peraons who can afford to disregard pecuniary conaiderationa. Bnt the desire to obtain a 1 heap reputation for economy, hae led >ur law makers to engraft upon theoounry cheap systems of legislative, execu--ive, and Judicial service, which tend everywhere to in competency and demoralisation, Well housed, well clothed and well fed public servants are not half aa likely to steal as are the shivering sod hungry political wretches so often elected to office. “The laborer is worthy of hie hire," but in Illinois, if be is worthy of no more than “his hire,’’ those called into the vineyard of the public sesriee are a set of lacy incompetents. If we want competency and honesty in our Legislatures, Courts, and State Departments, let us learn asquldtly as possible that we must pay for them; and the first time ws bear a candidate for the Constitutional Convention prating about low salariea in order to gain popular tavor, let us eet him down aa one who, if be had aa many arms as Briareus, would have every one of. them. If he could, plunged to the shoulder into the State trefoury. “There is a withholding that soattrreth abroad.’’ He who would pay an able judk'e lees than a aeedy shyster of the Folios Court osn nick up, would practice Jnat that sort ofwlthholdlng. We want none of It.—QMeopo Jtogf

TENIA 80LLNUM. N*w Albaxt, Juno 21, 1889. Da. W. M. Wiloox—for.- In answer to your fnquiry In regnrd te the effect of your remedy for tapeworm. I bog leave to tell my experience: Seven year* ago I discovered that I woe afflicted with on* of thee* monster*. At first It did not interfrre with my health or business, bat after abont n year I became very sick at intervals. My health began to foil mo, nod I became very thin and emaciated. I commenced doctoring, and to bo brief, I hav* paid oat large sums of money to n gnat many physicians. I lived at Uniontown.Kentaeky, when I commenced with th* physician*, every on* of whom I tried in that and neighboring towns and oities, without any effect. Iwastoldby many of them that the worm woald kill me; that there was no hope, as it wa« virtually a question of time in my cue for my death to ensue. I began to think they wen right, and eonoladed to enliet in the servio*. thinking it just as well to bo ihot witk a bullet as to die of a worm. I also had a hope tbat while in th* eervio* I might find some Doctor who would do some good. In thit I was mistaken, a* I tried every on* I earn* in contact with during three years aorvio*. I took every kind Of uedioin* that could bo thought of, all of which failed to nrnov* the terrible enemy gnawing at my vital*. I finally moved to thi* eity about a year ago. and wno ncemmenued to oatl and see you. At fte Um* I same I must eon fees that I thought th* job a hopolaee on*, but I am happy to say that I now njoic* that I earn*. Th* morster woe ontinly nmoved from my system, after being under your treatment a few day*. The worm was stnty-ein foot aud five inches long, and I am satisfied that I am perfectly wall. I hav* gained my (tnagth very fast during tha past two month*. I meet heartily recommend your remWUB. Floyd Cotnerr, July 10.1963.
