{rage masses. The Government would soon be left in s woeful minority, and nothing would remain but four years of embarrassment and unpopalarUy, and an ignominious surrender of office. . JU, on the other hand. General Grant should aisk to become a pacificator of the country, and thus discard the councils oi Sumner, Greeley, and the rest; he will, of oeuiae, lose a good many Republicans. By neither nor any plan could they keep that party together. It must divide at once. But his Iom of the ultras rad violent Badteate would endear him all the more to the moderate men of the Republican party, and would conciliate the Democratic party and the country generally. Such an administration would be immensely popular, and if the new President were sonered to retire at the end of bis term, it would be with such general respect and approval as that which followed Washington, Monroe^and Jackson to their retirement. There would be once more an “era oi good feeling” in the country, and the author of it would have

patent for a safety coffin, designed to provide a way of escape to those who might be buried during suspended animation. This invention consists of a coffin constructed similar to those now in use, except that It is a little higher, to allow of the free movement of the body; the top lid ia moveable from head to breast and, in ease of interment, is left open, with a spring attached for closing the Mate. Under the head is s receptacle for refreshments and restoratives. The important part of the invention is a box two feet square, resembling very much s chimney. With« cover and ornamental grave work on the top. This box is of sufficient length to extend from the bead of the coffin to about one foot above ground. The coyer is fastened down by a natch, and ran aot he unfastened from the outside. Just below the oarer is a bell with a cord appended, which, upon being pulled, sounds an alarm, and at the same time a spring throws tbs oorer from the “ehimnay box.” Then, if the person on the inside have sufficient strength, he or she ran take hold of s rope suspended from the top of the chimney box, and viduals eaa riu . .id bell lor tbetoxtqa to some and assu* him out. Mr. Vaster gave u exhibition of the working of this invention by being buried, and, after more than an hoar’s iuterment, reearrecting himself. The grave diggers having excavated s hole six feet deep, a black coffin Wilk silver trimmings was placed
