Runaway.—One of the fire engine horses, a splendid large bay, took fright yesterday on Alabama street at the dropping of a side-board from a rickety old bed of a wagon to which he waa attached and which was being need for hanling cistern covers, and started off at a furious speed. The driver held well to the lines, but the slipping of the bed on the axles prevented hie managing the horse, who finally turned into the market space. The wagon horse brought.np with each force against a tree, as to displace the boards of the bed end bring the horse to the ground.
The driver had a narrow escape.
Dzkocratio Mxanifo at Acrow.—The gallant Democrats of Franklin Township had their closing rally at Acton yesterday. But very little notice had been given of the meeting, yet there was e large crowd in sttendenee. The Union White Boys In Blue, accompanied by ladles, representing the several States of the Union, made e very creditable display. The Democracy of Franklin Township will do their whole duty to-day. The ipeeting wee celled to order by Esquire Beilis, and introduced J. W. Nicbol, who addressed the audience for on hour and a half upon the issues of the day. He was listened to attentively, sad as he dosed he wee loudly cheered. The Democrats of old Freuklln will be alive todiy and glva an increased Democratic majority. i ' Arotkxr Rvxaway.—Mr. H. J. Pryan yesterday stepped into the drag store of Wiles A Reynolds, near the Post Office, and left hie horse stending unhitched. He hod barely stepped into the store when the horse, either becoming frightened et some real thing, or, in obedience to some unaccountable disposition to be devilish that seems toheve possessed the equine specie in the lest few days, started off at fall tilt down Market street. The horse wee caught without damage to him or the buggy. The result of the freak wee the loos qf a cushioned seat and a whip, that foil from the buggy near the Market epees. The eoldiei* la the South were not allowed to -hear from us. Our prindplaa were misrepresented, and hy an .'unwarranted power oar newspapers were denied circulation, that tha party in power might the better evltlvate a distrust and a hatred of os among those - who were fighting for the preservation of that which la moat dear to all of a*. I thank God, however, that the time did come when the soldiers came home, add by intercourse with us, sooa learned what was and la the tenth. lam not afraid, when the soldiers shall have heard the troth; shall have heard the questions dividing us discussed; I am not afraid of their judgments on the political Issues of the day. JjH The soldiers that hove identified themselves with tha Democratic party in the political straggle of 1888; ore fighting for precisely the same sentiment* end prinoiplee, the same glorious objects for which they fought In the field in 1862-8, and 1888 the Constitution, the Union, end equal States in tho Union. Knowing that we were misrepresented and misunderstood, it is Indeed asonae of greet gratification to me now to be assured, that since we are understood and appreciated, the eoldler’e heart is in harmony with the Democracy. The apeaker here alluded briefly to the organization in the South which was denounced by the opposite party, because of its opposition to the giving over the government into the kendo of the negroes. The Senator thought that the element most to be relied upon in the Southern States for the upholding of the flag and the Constitution, was that white element co-operating with the Democratic party upon the basis of loyalty according to the trye interpretation of the word, devotidn to the Constitution, and obedience to the laws of the land; that element which waged war in the defense of the institution of slavery ; but defeated, acknowl edged the cause K fonght for lost, and acquiesced in the results of the struggle. “'This is the class,” said he, “that does not profess to he devoted to negro suffrage, and if they did, they wouldn’t have my confidence in a very high de-
gree.”
The Republican party wants the South ruled and represented by those men only who give in their adhesion to negro suf-
frage.
The speaker’s reference to the fast that the most violent pro-slavery men and the moat blatant rebels et the beginning of the war, were the men who now, like Joe. Brown, fawn at the feet of power, and openly avow a love for negro political equality. Such political and social apostates be for one could not trust. Such men reminded him of the fellow who wanted to join on orthodox ebnrcb, and who presented himself to the au-. thorltles of the church for examination Among other questions pnt to the applicant for admission into the church waa question “whether if It pleased God that he, the applicant, should be d—d, would he be willing to be d—d.” The applicant thought a minute, end answered that on that subject he was not quite clear. He wee not then admitted, but after a few Weeks of meditation he presented himself again for examination, and waa asked the aame question. On this occasion the fellow determined that his answer should be an ont-and-oot Radical expression, end he accordingly replied that after mature.deliberation be had ooneluded that he would a little rather ho d—d then not. The Senator thought that the Radicals ot the South the natives who had gone over body and soul to the party in power, were fair types of the applicant for meusborshifr in
the church.
, They go too far for even the most reckless. He preferred to treat those men who fbught manfully for a principle, lost in the fight, acquiesced in the results and came back, willing to refletrihair allegiance to the Constitution, and to obey the lews of the lend. They were always to be trusted before that elaan “whs bend the pr8gn*ht hinges 0/ the knee that thrift may follow fawning.” “To-morrow,” said he, “iatbqgflM*day of the year—the great day of fear yean. To-morrow as it were, the great Amerl can OlympieaL In Grteie^erary four' years they had the Olympic games, which he was crowned with laurel who won great successes Id Ihets strength. “Will William John Wallace Inform us *» to who In the only man In the county of Marion, who ever acknowledged himself to be a ballot-box atuffer, or will he compel an answer trom those who know 7” I can name a good many who engaged in stalling the ballot-box, and who voted tissue tickets, too.
