"Old Abe” evidently had a proper appreciation of carpet-baggers. On the 21st day of November, 1868, he wrote to General N. P. Bakks, then commanding the Department of the Gulf, who was, at that time, actively engaged In reorganising Louisiana under Likcolm’s favorite plan,

aa follows t '

"Dear Sir—Dr. Kennedy, bearer of this, hae some apprehension that Federal officers, not citiaene of Louisiana, may be set up ae candidates for Congrem in that State. In my view there could be no possible object iu such an election. .We do not particularly need member* of Congress from these Staten to enablw us to get along with LegiRlation here. What we do want la conclunive evidence that respectable dtigene of Louteisna are willing to be members of Congress, and to swear support to the Constitution: and that other respectable citizens are willing to vote for them. To send a parcel of Northern men here as Representatives, elected, as they would be understood (and, perhaps, really so,) at the point of tbe bayonet, would be disgraceful and outrageous; and were I a member of Congress then, I would vote against ad

mlttlng any aucb man to a seat.

A. Lincoln.”

Such was the martyr’s opinion of car-

pot-baggers.

He seems cheerful and happy in meeting the frw remaining ©©temporaries of hla yeuth, In fighting over again the battle of life. We remember with •pleasure the kind, soelal Intercourse ever existing between him and our aged and now atSteted fiather r and ware glad to grasp the hand of friendship extended to us. May the Governor long live to enjoy the consciousness of a life well and hon-

orably spent,

Have you Heard from 014 Varm cant— Varmoant—Vermeil nt f /Did citizens will recognize In tbe above heading the cgfrAln of an old Whig eong, which was ohsunied and aung at every Whig’meeting In 1844. Then Vermont ha$igone with a largely increased majority for Mr. Clat, and^ir opponents were almost ae tickled over her vote, as the radical# of to-day, are over thd recent election In that State. Tbe result; however, will be tbe same In both cases. Though Vermont gave a largely Increased Whig majority in 1844, Mr. Clay teas beaten, and now, as then, the omen will hold good. . . ' r Nobody expected Vermont to do otherwise than vote the radloal ticket. The legislation of Congreea has been entirely for her benefit, at tbe expense of tbe Middle, Western and Southern States. The high tsriff wss made for her benefit— tbe Freedmen's Bureau keeps her schoolmarms employed—and her people have been enriched at the expense of the people of the other sections. Nobody then could expect Vermont to do otherwise than vote the radical ticket. But she has never been an index to success. Vermont, rarely, ever voted for the euooeest'ul eandldate for President, up to 1860. Nearly every President up to that time, was elected against the vote of Vermont. And so it will be now. Grant . will got the vote of Vermont, but Seymour will be onr next President.

His •eattsaeat.

At the Chicago Convention that nominated Graxt for the Presidency, to which he was a delegate, Ex-Governor Joseph E. Brown, of Georgia, said j. "I am an ORIGINAL SECESSIONIST. I early imbibed bis States’ rights doctrines, si went Into SECESSION CORDIALLY, aad stood by it as long as there was any chance to sustain Ui I lought you openly aad, boldly.” This Is tbe fellow the rfcda havd taken to their bosom, and swear that he is intensely'"loyal,” whfle they ink abusing Forrest, who was an original Union man, and jave his vote and hia Infiueaee

—Exchange*

All of these gentlemen are now radicals, and in addition we have Governor Baker, Colonel R. W. Thompson, General James C. Veatch, Judge L. Q. De Brvber and indeed, all the prominent radicals of the State, who, In 1854 and 1856, were rampant Know-Nothings.

BNMnswllan«lra.

There is an Impression among many that a person of foreign birth must be naturalized before they can vote for Pi Ident. This is a great mistake. Any male person who was not born In tbe United States, who will go to ths office of tbe Clerk of the Court, end declare his Intention to become a citizen, can vote for both President and Governor, if he has resided twelve months in the United States, six months of which have been in this State. Let all persons who are not native born citizens go at once to the Clerk’s office and declare their Intention. X^The Government has In tho last year paid clerks 1836,459 for dealing out food furnished by the Government for Idle negroes. At tbe same time hundreds of white workingmen and their families suflkred for th# common necessaries of life. They were not oared for by Government agents. Bread, meat and clothing were not provided for them. Why should white men be overlooked, neglectcu, and negroes pampered, petted and kept in idlancset If the tollers of the North wish a change in this particular, they must vote for Seymour and Blair. 1866, when Buchaxar was elected President, the Republicans carried Vermont by 29,000 majority. Now, on a much larger vote, they have only 27,o6r, Tbe Fhemoktsrs crowed then Just as the Grarters will crow now. Let tiie he radicals crow and the she radicals cackle, if they choose. Seymour and Blair are to be onr next President and Vice Presi-
