TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST IS SHODDY. r.tpcrlanr ml no l.aasrllot l.adr villi ike Article IIa Idena of t ine Art. lCirctiEce cf tit CwtxLJl (Lonlon) X.gu.ut Before evening vat over, I found mjeelf in a smaller apartment, gorgeously furnished and rendered truly remarkable by tie abomiaable, towilv framed paiatiag whicb nearly covered the wa'lls. A human quartette was seated on the ofa.a U Kenwig, ami it needed to aecond look to convince me met I aew the four children of my holtest Feminine treble and mnculine baaa wer represented there ia eual parts, but that effect waa purely matter of faith, as nothing ia their lie es betrajed that they hvi trer ut tered a touod. Soon their taothar appeared. "Lor ! Mrs. D , yoa her? Weil, I hid to pet out of the pulori for a minit it't bo suffocating there. Thia it our family letting room. Ellen, I tick ia jour thou! Jen, Mitt ! (Tbii wan a dramatic aside, directed to the sofa department.) "I tee you're looking at the naintin'a Well, we have got lott of them, that'e certain. I tell Mr. G. we 11 bare a picture gallery before we koow it ha ! be ! but tkat'a nothing for the man'a bound to bare everything thai money can buy " (Here a radiant, ttlitfied ripple of expression ran acroit the quartette upon the tola ) I tried to tay t jtnethicr, but alas ! the allusion to the possible art gallery had jeopardized my gra? ity to such an extent that I could only cough pathetically. "This 'ere bi pictare," pursued Mrs. G.. "is a land-ape a ltlteape by children ! who is tbii Wniscape by?" "Mr. lienson," they all answered inabreath, closing their mouths Inttantly like four traps. "Yea, Mr. Benson. He's a Western maa, Mrs. I) , and don't charge aore'n a quarter what these New York painters ask. lie paints pretty, tho Ain't that white fence too natural?" the added, letting her bead drop i'.dswaji with its weight of admiration. Alaa ! the fence was too natural, but I did cot trust mytalf to say ap. I merely bowed, and tared Tacaally at an iJeal work presenting, as I suspected, Cupid and Psyche, ii.ee the blue dam sei depicted therein balanced . huge butterfly upoQ her shoulder, und her youthful compttion bad the inevitable 'ags and quiver of the miacbievous Uod of love. "That picture," broke forth Mrs. (J., standing in superb disdain before me, "ain't my taste Mr. G. bought it. It's a fancy piece, yoa tee Cupid and children ! what did your pa sty was the Lame of thi picture?" "Cupid and Ter-fjrA !" answered the two elder ones simultaneously. "Ob. yes; Cuptd and Per stick. But Mr?. 1) you must look at our portraits we're had one artist for a year past doing all our family. You may think the Here a Mr. G. and me. yeiiow gloves in my pictire am t mates any one might but art lha artlat waa bouud to put up they one of tbtm 'in ahadder,' in a pita ot all I could say. Tbii ia Daniel's picture (sit up straight, Daniel, and let go your sitter 'a sab;) it'a like him, all but the hair. The naughty boy, (loeking isverely at Daniel,) burr:t off one side of bit curls latt week, and we bad to cut off the rest. Here's our youngest boy Tommy the end one on the sofa there most beautiful boy! Alwaye just as sany aud lively as you nee him in the picture ain't it like him, Mrs D ?" "Very like," without venturing to take a aecond look at the origin! ! "Mr. Benson siid he never teen a harder child to piint, it was to difficult to get his expreMion. (Alack! I hould think it would have been very dillicult ) "He took him at r?t with one shoe on, and the other laving on the cirpet; but I wasn't goiiig to have a child oi mine lookiu' like that, eo I made Mr. Iieueou alter it quick. I told him to jatt change the ihoe on the carpet to a kitteu, or something of that kitd, and then to put good balmoralii on tLe poor child. It' bid enough to have your young one's locking like wild about the boue, without h&vine; their likeness took all in a muss !" A AynipniliiziiiK .Murderer ('ontralea of n ediali C terlrnl I'olaner It will be recollected that we ome time since gave an account of the terrible crimes of a Swedish clergyman in poisoning several of his parithoners by putting er-enic in the cotnruuiiiou wine when called touiteiid them tu tlnir aickness It teems that the several murders which he had recently committed were not the commencement of hie horrible deed At far bark as thirty year? these crimes wtie traced by circumstances attending the deaths of r eisons similar to thoe ot late occurrence. We give below hit curious confessieo: I comprehend "the paatorV duty as a father's. I ordered notice to be given me every Sunday by appointed persons of where any poor sick person was to be fuuLd Alter such inquiries, 1 went round wiih food and medicine, and became wit nee of much misery and hopler?us. When one stands beside an incurably tick and dread fully pained fellow creature, one wishes with all bis heart that he might Le released from his beartreadiog misery. By those hungry, cold, incurables in fiilbodahl I have often stood, moved by the deepest pity, and thought: "Were I in such a miserable plight, I would bless him who hastened the end of my piu. and God would forgive that merciful one." With every renewed risit to the.e poor people I was strengthened in the idea. I prepared eparate wine as help in trouble, when this, my misdirected charity, should urge me to do it. I thought, ako, what note deny, that very few human beings pass to the other world in the course o' nature i. e. when the powers of soul and body are worn out by age. Some external cause occurs, which God, though He does not advance it, yet does not prevent, ia virtue of the freedom He granted, the understanding He gave. How many in the prime of life, in their full vigor, are their own murderers, involuntarily, yet through misuse of their understanding? How many have fallen out of the hinds of the most skillful physicians into the grare? The paticut's statement is cot always properly comprehended, (yet the atatemeot determines the prescription, and the prescription determines lite or death,) without God's either helping or hindering, aud neither doctor nor patient it thought to hare any share ia the death. How many au illness, which in the beginning might easily have been cured, has, tbrcegh de!ay iu seeking heir, precipitated ita yictisn into the grave? From these incontrovertible facts, and the many such eximp!es which I hive partly heard decribed, partly witnested raj -elf, I have come to the conclusion and belief that science, as well as ignorance, oftens heart the most decisive part, and thit pious faith is often wrong in saving "the hour had come." I therefore believed that the merciful God would not condemn me if I shortened the sufferings of a miserable fellow-creature. This action is certainly in outward appearance against all law, but in reality it tests upon grounds of comp. on My God. before whom I b h a 1 1 finally auswer, knows this, and with deep contritiou I feel myself worthy of the sore punishment of the civil law, for the sinful compassion I exercised to ward the dead persons iu the cae. Respecting Lysec, men will like'y reject my assertion of mercy and call it se!hn$s in its grosest form, bat those who know his dreadful sufferings and our written agreements will admit my motives of pity. My gsiit is great. My enemies acted right in their earnest investigations. To ther con sciences, however, I put lie question: 'Was it seal ia service er zeal in persecution which directed your eourse?" Hate, t!ie world's demon, is a murderer, and wants even the four comfort of having sneaat well by its crime. That honor belongs to the native inhabitants of Central America, to whom its virtues have been anown for more than two hundred years. Armed with it, the Indian bids defiance to the most deadly malaria and handles without fear the most venomous serpents. Itls a belief with them, that while there is breath In the bod r the Cedron is potent to cure, no matter what tbe Uoas may be. While Dr. Bull is not prepared to endorse this extravagant pretension, he is nevertheless satisfied from a thorough examination of the evidence relating to its virtues, that as a remedy and preventative of a' I diseases arising from exposure, either to change of weather or climate, or to miasmatic influences, it stands WITHOUT A RIVAL! Likewise, I w ill guarantee a radical cure of Syphilis, Gonorrhoea and Gleet, in all their stages, entirely removing from the Uuod the last spark of these terrible diseases that s gradually burn up the fountain of life. Diseases and Conditions Peculiar to Females. The beauty and extreme delicacy of the female organization, to say nothing of its physiological characteristics, are suClcient indications that it is subject to forms of disease aud mod.flcations peculiar to itself. The physician of the present day does not encounter any more forms of uterine diseases than did the physician ef fifty years ago; but owing to the present social condition of woman, her diseases are increased to frequency, and to the truth of this assertion the melancholy deaths by consumption bear ample witness. At the American Dispensary we treat by a new method, and with the happiest results. Prolapsus Uteri, (falling of the womb,) Eruptions of the 8kia, Chlorosis, or Green Sickness characterized, by yellowish, dirty green pallor of the surface; Emansio Messium, or abent Menstruation; Amenorrhea, or Retention of the Menses Dysmenorrhea, a painful and did. cult flow of the Menses Menorrhagia, or profuse Menstruation; Lenchorrhea, or excessive and altered ecretlou of the mucus generally white, or nearly coloresa and transparent. Reader, I have given yoa a class of diseases that are met with in Females of all ages, whether married or unmarried; and to married Females would sav that there are many oth r forms of diseases peculiar to your sex dloeases of Pregnancy, Parturitien, and Lactation, of which spitce will not admit an elucidation. 1 omit it for the counril chamber, adding but ene more disease to this lit, and that is a formidable one Ulcers tion of the body of the Uterus. If you are afflicted with organic weakness, or any assemblage of morbid phenomena of this character, you have no time to spare, but at once apply for m-d cal aid. If too late to arrest the disease, it is at least possible to palliate the ymptoms, and thus ruoethe the pathway to ai untimely grave. la a majority cf instances these, di.-eases have mads considerable progress before the pavient becomes alarmed. In ome cases an emaciation is the first indicatiop that attracts the attention of the patient's friends. Ans" here, reader, let me call your earaest attention to the fearful sign;ficance of the word "wasting." It not only constitutes the leading feature, but the earliest and mest ominous syropt. s of Consumption, examples of which are invariably met with in youcg ladies who are gifted with high iL;, lectual endowments, refined accomplishments, atd vts flawing with unnatural brilliancy not regarding thee iadicatiens as being those ef i no; pi er, t disease, but those of personal charms.
