Morton was not prevent, and his own reluctance to appearing before the men in the capacity of a speaker. He bad recently laid aside the garb of blue, and was happy to ee so many present wearing the "liveiy .f their country." He spoke of the associations tormed in the service, and the advantages in knowing and finding out the char ncteritic of each otber. He referred to the clunge of life they were about entering on, and crneitly erj iced the men to conduct tbem-telves so as to meet the approbation of all. He said thit they did not expect to monopolize all the oCices, and they asked when all other things were rqaal, the palm rbould be yielded to the soloier; or could tbey expect to live upon the gratitude of the people. Dick Ryan being ou tbe stand was called for, and made ooe of his characteristic speeches. He didn't altogether approve of the moral lecture delivered from the stand He thought the soldiers were an competent to take care of themselves he was. If tbe soldiers wanted a drink, be said to them, go and get one. Meu ought not to be put under the apron strings of their wives and mothers. He thought the negro uf trage question had been sprung rather prefecture, bat he did believe that a negro who had fought along side with a white man was more entitled to vote th in a Copperhead. He thought this q'iea lion bhould be determined by the Slates, and in that he wtood by Fiesidcut Johnson The Government had not the ri"ht to sav one word iu this matter. The people of the State mut do that. He was opposed to the introduction of politics into thee receptions, but others had done so and in it be found bid apology. The Colone! told come palatable truths for the roeq, but they were not exactly relished bj '"those ia authority." Tbey were unprepared for it, and a Dick 'hove in the band gresade there was general conatercatioa. Cor clerical friend, who they call the Chaplain, (John Hogarth) was completely taken aback, and no doubt, thought Colooel'Rvari's remarks were out of place, as they interfered with tbe nice little arrangement all mapped out long since, and beinz carefully followed Wy those who figure at tLe receptions. The truth will make us free ar.d just. Such truth as Colonel Rjan told jesdiy is what is needed, if politic must enter into receptions. We do not wish tob understood as saying that all who speak at receptions refer to the subject of politic. We d not wih to do tb at tajauice. Th-re i one exception. PzTEOiT, August 11 A collision between the Pew a Wie and Meteor occurred at half past eight o'clock on Wednesday evening, six miles from shore. The Fewabic was struck on her port bow just aft the pilot houe. and sunk in three or four minutes. The boats were running at full speed and struck with such terrible force aa to cruth ia the entire bow of the Fewabic. At the time of the accident it was scarcely dark and the boats saw each other six milei off; when approaching they exchanged signals, and the Fewabic bore iH to pass;! but tbe Meteor tor some as yet unexplained reason, turned io tbe ttme direction aud struck the Fewabic. A cumber were killed by the crushing of timbers. A few ptengers jumpped on board the Meteor before the Pewabic sunk. Tbe life boat was immediately lowered from the Meteor, and picked up those who were not carried down with the wreck. One hundred and seTeuty-bve to two hundred passengers were on board the Fewabic The names of seventy-five of the passengers and crew saved are knowu. Tbe loss of life cannot be correctly ascertained yet. but will be near one hundred. The Meteor remained near the scene of the disaster till morning. i n hopes of picking up any persons who might be still floating on pieces of wreck, but none were fouud. The propellor Mohawk passing down, the survivors were transferred to her from the Meteor, and brought to this city. Tbe Meteor was but slightly injured and con tinjied her trip to Lake Superior.
