HI There has been Jess rowdjism add robberies committed within the put few day tbn for the aame length of time for two months past. With more Ttgilabce upon the pirt of the policeforce and the effective Provost Guard, evil doers would ceate practicing their arts entirely in the citj, r at lean be lei frequent in the commit ion of criminal deed. ET To day, at two o'clock I M., there will will be atrial of fleam fire engine at the cru log of West street and the Canal. Tbe engines are brought here by the manufacturers, with the understanding that If tbey prove all that they art recommended, the City Council will purchase one of them. One ia from Cincinnati and the other from Seneca Kalls, N.Y, ManulactU"3it draft akeladJIers, from Hcudricka county, who had returned from Canada, eipectlog, of course, to be no further subject to tuiiitar j dotj, or molestation from I'rovoot Marshals, were arretted on Saturday, and brought to this city end imprisoned at the Suldiera' Home What disposition will be made of these meu we are unadvised. We were told a severe penalty ia inflicted, and thai the men are put into the regular arm for five jeus, and made tu do duly without paj; but of this we are not poaitive tCTWe cot remember of lodianapolis passing a more quiet and orderly daj than yesterday. A truly Sabbath itilloeta prevailed emjwhere. There were bat few peraoot upon the street, aave at the church-going hour. Many have felt painfully the disregard !r the atnctitj of tho Sabbath that has characterized this city fur the paat few year, and kkx1 men have labored lor the return of that time when "the dr of tiered real" was observed with punctual fidelity and a christian spirit, when it vu indeed a flay of rest, nJwhfu til tecular pursaiti were abstiintd from, and a proper regard for the diy etteudel to all classes. May the old order of things return, tod the first day of the week be oWrved at.d respected as it should be by a christian rota munity. Tue WfSTia.i Mabkat Hovac For the pxst two tears, owing to the fact that it was theu appropriated aa a temporary barracks for eoldiers, the Western Maiket House has been abandoned for the purpose it was intended. There is no reason why it should not be opened again ai a market. The Market House ia there, and it could be put in good repair at a emtll cost. We have now but one market or the why! city, and the people of the western portion are either compelled to go a great distance, or purchase their marketing of hucksters Is it right to impose Ibia burden on a large portion of the cltizena, especially when there is a tatrket, with auiDle room for farther Improvements, if necessary, laying idle? The Councilmen ol the Third, Fourth and Fifth Wards especially owe it to their constituents to aee that the Western Market is piomptly put in repair and reopened. There might be alternate markets iu the Kaateru and Western Market House on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdaja and Fridays, and both opened on Saturdays, say oue in the morning and the other In the afternoon and evening. At all events, the Western Market should be repaired and opened for the convenience of the western part of the city. At the corner ol Illinois atd Ohio streets a splendid Hall ia being erected. The Feast was propei Iv oter I in thia city by the faithful. We gite the origin ol tie Feast, aa taken from the Jewish creed: "The holy day celebrated oo the ninth day of ti t Hebrew month of Ab wtt instituted in com rr emoratioti of the destruction of the second temple by Titus It ia one of the most importaol of the many Jewish festivals religiously oberved throughout the year, and held aa eucb by a people which, strange to say, honors with ap propriate rites the anniversaries of both triumphs and reverses The holy day which was ushered in at eundowu on Mouday is. beaidea, more pe cu liarly recalled to the recollection of the Jews than most others. On the ninth day of the month of Ab, the first temple was destroyed by Nebuct.adueisar, as was the second, after a lapse of asreral centuries, by Titus. Oj the same eunivertary, in the days of Ferdintud ai d Isabella. the Jews were driveu forth from Spain simultaneously with the Moors, and scattered throughout' the length and breadth of the land And, again, by a singular coincidence, en the same date Columbus set sail Irora (en-a to discover a latd wherein roeo of religious and political faith were deuioed, ia future ages, U be equal. To place the road in order and repair the wharf, and erect tbe necessary building!, tbe Company bare been working a number of white mechanics and colored la borers. Tbe latter, it ia eaid, have bad very bitter and vindictive feelings towards the whites, but there has been no open outbreaka. Tbe wbitee have been latterly on tbeir guard, apprehensive of trouble, but finally began to suppose their fears cn founded. Oa Tuesday night laat one ol the colored men let out the teeret, informing them that the blacka bad formed a compact to murder all tbe whites at that place, and bad for that purpose collected pistols, knives, hatchets, Lc, which, at a preconcerted signal, they were to seize during the night, and each one rash and ditpatch bis victim. The informant gave tbe names of tbe principals, and other details, and also told where the arms were. The blacks outnumbcrieg tbe whites by considerable, tbe latter were sent to Stafford Court House and informed tbe commtndact of the military of the matter, and on Wednesday a sufficient foree waa sent down to capture the plotters. borne of tbe blacks attempted to resist and fought desperately in the melee. In securing them one of thena was killed outright, two or three received bayonet wounds. Tbe military took into custody 40 or 50 of the blacks aud marched them off to a place of security, and also gathered up a motley collection of implements, which were found in places described by informant. There waa considerable excitement during tbe time intervening between the discovery ol the plot and the arrival ot the military, ana preparations were made by a few whites, in case the negroes attempted to put their plans luto execution, to give taem a warm reception. The clork in charge of the commissary stores packed tbetn on a barge and pushed out in the stream, bot this was done to quietly that the blacka were cot aware it waa ou account of the discovery of the plot, and the arrival of the military was the first intimation the; had that their plans had been made known.
