DAILY SENTINEL
FRIDAY MORNING, JULY 7. ===== The Western Gold mines. [From the St. Louis Republican.] The wonderful discoveries of precious metals in Montana during the past year have induced an almost unprecedented emigration thither this spring, to be swelled by the thousands of officers and soldiers who have resolved to make their new homes in that Territory. It it said that those discoveries were made mostly under the auspices of wealthy capitalists of New York, who sent thither, at large expense, a scientific corps, under the management of Professor A. K. Eaton, formerly of the United State Assay Office. The design was to keep the facts secret until the best mining property had been secured by them. Hence this spring Prof, Eaton returned, with other scientific men, in the same interest, taking with them all the needed machinery for the new process of reducing ores. Probably from three to four thousand tons of each machinery have been sent forward this season, and eight or ten thousand tons of general merchandise. We presume that at least fifty steamers have found more or less employment in connection with that new trade, many going the whole distance to Fort Benton. A few days ago we mentioned the return of one, on which it was estimated a quarter of a million dollars in gold was brought down as freight and in the hands of passengers. General Dodge estimates the number of wagons crossing the plains, though not all destined for Montana, at four thousand, yet others assert that full that number is destined for that Territory alone. The amount of gold produced in Colorado last year is estimated at twenty four million dollars; and letters from reliable sources intimate that it will probably be doubled this year. The increase is owing, in large measure, to the improved process now in use for reducing ores. Indeed the tailings have yielded under the new system immense profits to all concerned. There has not been, for some time, any doubt as to the richness of the Colorado mines, but the difficulty has been in working them profitably. Their ores have been, in miner's phrase, "rebellious"—hard to reduce. That difficulty is now overcome to a great extent. The Muontain [sic] mines, however, are of a somewhat different quality, yielding higher assays, and situated amid the greatest abundance of wood and water. The climate is unsurpassed in healthfulness, and the valleys are of mild temperature, abounding in cereals and vegetables of all kinds. Cattle graze in them throughout the year. The new road opened, and about to be improved by a Montana company, stimulated by a large Congressional appropriation, make the distance overland, from Omaha to Virginia City, only 800 miles, without crossing a mountain. That road winds through valleys furnishing abujdant forage and game. The Montana Post says, "The journey from Omaha in stages, by the new route, can be made in eight days in summer and ten days in winter." The new discoveries referred to were in Rattlesnake Hills, a short distance from East Bannock, and are silver lodes, some yielding as high as $3,000 per ton. Previously, the only mines of note known there were of gold, or gold and silver combined. The new silver mines are in crevices varying from two to twelve feet, and are nearly perpendicular, widening as you descend. They are in side hills, and give five hundred feet in depth before reaching the water line. The most famous silver mines in the Washoe district, Nevada, average less than one hundred dollars per ton; and those in the Reese River district generally average less than three hundred. The latter, however, are in such narrow crevices as to be worked with great difficulty. Comparing the Nevada silver mines with those of Montana, eminent geologists, metallurgists and miners have expressed the opinion that the latter will yield from six to ten times greater profit. The new gold lodes at Beaver Head, Prickly Pear, Mill Creek and Dear [sic] Lodge, as assayed at the United States Assay Office in New York, give in some instances, $3,000 per ton, and in one $14,000. New York capitalists have been eagerly at work to secure those mines, and control as many others there as possible. With such a vast country, and its immense resources of precious metals, &c., as feeders for the St. Louis trade; and with the large mineral and agricultural advantages furnished us by our neighboring States—now that our natural routes to the Southern States are open—this city ought speedily to become what friends have uniformly predicted the greatest inland city on the globe. ---<>--- Things Found. It in worth while to consider whether there is not a verv extensive demoralization of the public , mind on the pubject of the rights of property, with referer ce to articles lot and four.d. There seems to be a very common notion thnt an article found belong to the Snder, and it is probable that rot one tenth of the property Iot ever recovered by the rightful owner, even w;th the assistance ot advertisements A friend of ours left a package a tew davs since on a Hrooklyu ferryboat. It was of amsll value, but it wasd.rected to him, with full name and office address The person who picked it up of course knew who was the owner, and should have sent it to tum, but it was never heard of. The finder, in thi ca-e, wa simply a thief, neither more nor lea. It is a plain ca?e Another friend of ours left a package of considerable value, and fortunately it was of such peculiar appearance that the overseer at the ferry remembered seeing it carried ashore, an-i oa the next 'day pointed out the individual who carried it. The excuse which be made was simply I found it." He bad lett no word at the ferry office, and made ro effort to discover the- owner. We mention these twj ct.-es as illustrations of what occurs every day. It is too pUiu that a great many well meaning people imagine that "tiudicg" au artielo m ample title to its od.eVion. It is a melancholy truth that Christiau nations can learn s irae things trom even Mohammedans. We remember or.re seeing a silk head dres (the Arab tooia) ljirg in the middle of the nu'l crowded street of l)aniacus at mid-day. livery passer-by, nnd the number was thousands, avoided treading on it, and it lay there tilt ruet, for the nwtur to find it if be should return. Every summer two hundred pie-nics are given here by water transportation : about six thou sscd by land; eight hundred thousand dollars are invested in pic nie capital gronndp. budd ings, barge-, etc. Tea thousand persons, dur icg the summer, tire by the pitrotige of picnicers. There are two firms which absorb the busi neis of renting excursion birges to pic nic partiesII. II. Crost and Myers Co., both of West street, North river. These barge are double decked, provided with dancing floors, bars, and all the concomitants of a floating ballroom. They are used during the fall tad spring for carrying freight, but are fixed up ia the summer for lighter duties. They rent for seventy five dollars a day, exclusive of tbe bar, which costs considerable more. A tug boat to tQore them at the rate ot eight m'de an hour cots from sixty to seventy dollars a day. The proprietors of these bargca are authorized amenta for most of the pic nie ground adjacent to tbe water, such as Siint Ronan' Well, Newark Bay Grove. BIddle's Orove, Pleasant Valley and Fort Lee. There are seven first class pic-nic barges altogether, each bearing a fanciful name, such as the "Htrvet Home," the "Chincopee," and the "Anna." Most of the pic üc groves real lor twenty dollars a day, that is, the groves removed from the city; and then the gates can either be closed, or a ticket office established at the barriers, at the option of tbe charterers. Some grounds rent as Iowas ten dollars a day ; ethers, near the city, rent at $100 a day. Tbe bars of tbe boj.u often lease for enonuou sums of money. For the boiler-makers' excursion of last year the sub letae brought $250 for the day, and the lease cleared $350. The boilermakers gave the large-t excursion of the present year also, having sold upward of 3,500 tickets. Sunday school excursions on the water do not generally tile out more than 300 persons.
