And two thousand pruaooerj were also taken. The number of prisoner takeu on the Gth, is put do wo at 7,700, almoit entirely of Kertham'a and Curtis Lee a divisions. The correspondent, after jr,iTing further details of events, but which have mainly been published through official sources, says the field where the surrender took place, waa almost covered with the enemy' dead, all of them nearly being shot through the head and upper parta of the body. The position was very favorable for them. but ocr artillery bad good racge on an adjoining hill and our men charged up the ascent with such impetuosity that fome were bayoneted befcre thev left their light breastworks. The road for mi lea was strewn with broken wag '0?, ciissonsand baggage of every description, presenting a sight seldom witnessed. On part of Lee's army the loss cn the t'th will sum cp about 1,000 io killed and wonnded. The Sixth corps suffered heavily. Another letter, dated the evening of the ;b, says: S'ragglera are found scattered along the line, and aa the troops pss they come In and surren der, expressing their determination to fight no longer, aa they consider the rebellion as good as over. Four gun were brought in this morning, besides a Ions train of ambulancca containing a large number of wouuded, who were placed in hospital and cared for. Gen Gordon pent four surgeons through the lines this afternoon asking that they be allowed to minister to the wants of thoe left behind on the road, but as all hare plenty of such help they will return to the army in the morning. Gen. Hays was relieved from the command of the 2J division, "2i corp, yesterday, for tardiness in moving his command in obedience to orders. Arjother letter dated the Dih b.iyi: Jiotwithetanding the correspondence which yesterday led all to expect a formal surrender, this morning the latter exerted all his efforts to escape the net laid for him. He marched rapidly all yesterday afternoon and evening until he ran against Sheridan at Appamattox C. II., when a sharp fight ensued, resulting in the capture of a number of prisoner and checking their retreat. The 24tb corps waa close up in support of tbe cava'ry, and during the night took up a strong position acrosa the main road and on the south side of the Appomattox, cutting them off from that direction. Early this morning Sheridan attacked vigor ouidy, and for some time a brisk engagement was carried on. About nine o'clock a flag of truce appeared in front ot his line, and he was informed that hostilities had been suspended. This waa caused by an agreement madebv General Ord, who consented to a cessation of firing to communicate with General Grant, it ia said without authority. General Sheridan's Adjutant General was allowed to come through the rebel column to communicate with General Meade, who stated that he knew of do such arrangement, and that he was about to move forward in accordance with his previous intentions. Gen. Lee, however, sent Gen. Walker a message desiring to have au interview with Gen. Grant to arrange tbe term? of surrender, and Gen. Meade waa thus obliged to grant a two hours armiv.ice in order to communicate with Gen Giant, who had moved around to the left durirg the light. Geu. Grant consenting to see Gen. Lee and dicufs the matter, about half past four o'clock. Lieutenant Colonel Whittier, of Gen. Wright's staff, came in ai:d reported the terms arranged and the paper? signfd, when the greatest excitement prevailed throughout our lines, cheer upon cheer rending the air. Soon after Gen. Meade's staff, with other ofliccrs, rode along the line of the Second and Sixth corpa, and they were greeted with the most enthusiastic shouts, men throwing their h its in the air and dancing with joy and delight. No such scene has ever been witnessed in this army, aud the thanks of the whole couutry are due to the brave men and their heroic comrade, at such a great and glorious rcault. It is understood that the men of Lee's army aie to be psroled and allowed to return to their home. They gave up everything in their hands, but lat night they destroyed a large amount ot property ia the rhipe of gun carriage, bggs.gc, papers, kc. The number of Lee's army ia put down at and very few guns were in their pos-es-sion, aa they abandoned nearly all they did not lofein service. Som38gun8 were brought in yesterday and several this morning. The rank and file of Lee's army is said to be well satisfied to give up, believing they had no hope of success, but say that if Gen. Lee bad refused to surrender they would have stuck to him to tbe last. The officer are somewhat surly and discontented, but this feeling will soon wear off when they find how liberal and kindly our people are disposed to treat them. Atothcj leter from tbe army of tbe Potomac dated April 12. says: Tbe final arraugtmer-ts for tbe surreuder of Lee's army wers completed yesterday; and today they are at liberty to go to tbe'r homes or elsewhere as they please. The terms granted were certainly very liberal. The officers and thousands of our men express their dissatisfaction, not only at the unprecedented liberality granted to the rebel army, but in tbe manner in which they were paroled and allowed to go their way, without our men being permitted to erjoy the results of tteir locg struggle in pissirg through the line of Gen. Lee and his army. But it is claimed that this would have been humiliating to Gen. L?e and his officers, and it is not the wUb of our government to act towards them in any way that would tend to irritate their feelings and make their position more intolerable than it is.
