the (oversment, ana tcciosea dj a ubsuniu.i and handsome fence. Nearly five thousand soldiers have already been there buried, and the number is daily growing larger. In 1853, Mrs. Custis, the mother of Mr. Geo. Lee, died in the Arlington mansion and was buried in a sequestered delightful grove near the mansion; and in 1857 Mr. Custis died, and his remains were deposited by her side, a vast cotconrit of penoai of erery rank testif ins their reverencft for the departed by their fresence at tbeobecquiea. That tequeatered grove, thus selected by ila owner as the last reeling place for aüaeelf aod hie, baa been in tbe tempest of the Ümts iavaded, the forest has been transformed into a field of tbe dead, acd the two mirble columns marking the remains of George Waahicgtcn Parke Cajtii acd Mary Le Ftzhogb, his wife, now rue ia the midst of more than four thousand patriot aoldiers' grave. Nearly tbe whole of tbe timber idI wood bn been swept from the entire estate and used for war purpose. The freedmen'a village is established upon oce portion of the land thai cleared, and ft is all being put ander cultivation by contraband ccgro labor. Mr. Custis iattriteJ this Mate from bis father, who waa the ton of Mrs. Gen. Washington by a former buiband. Soon after bis mother died, in lb02,be, Iben about 25 year, of se, cime bero Iron UMtot Verooo, ani with bis young aod accomplished wife took cp their residence in tbe Arlington namion, Lieh Le had then just erected, and which evermore waa their beautiful and ctilti rated borne. The fmitj of this coioo were four danpbten. all of whom died in infancy, except Mars- Custis, the wife of General Robert E. Lec. Mr. CiMtis father, John Parke Curtis, was an aide de camp to Washington, and died of camp fever ia 1731, contracted at the siege of Yorktown.at tie age of iT7 jeirs. He had married, at l'J years ofae, Eleanor Calvert, of Mr. Airy, Md., a descendant of the second Lord Biltimore, when but 15 years of ao, and at 23 sLe waa thus made a widow with four children. Gen. Washington hastened to Eltham, Md , where tbe husband aa sick, only to see him in his d j ins? moment. This was tbe only surviving cbild of Mrs. Washington, tbo daozhtcr having died aome years before. He was deeply affected, and, weeping, said to the mothtr: "I adept the two jounger children as my own."' These were Eleanor Cutid, then two and a half years of age, who died at seventeen, of consntnp- j lion, and Ueorge Washington Park Cmtia, then six mooihs old. Gen. Was bieg ton took ucwearied pains in training this eon of his adoption, desiring to give him a olid ar,d liberal education; bot his efTorta failexl. The son wie aTere to study, though po,ca;cd of good abilities and at twenty-three je of age married, and de voted his life and very Itrge fortune, iuheritod from bis father and mother, to agriculture and pleasant literary pursuits, lie waa possessed ol much natural eloquence, cnJ wrote with a ready and cultivated pen, a the colamn of Tbe Intelligencer, to which he often contributed, bear testimony. Ue wu one of the first persona in this country m to embark in the raising of merino heep. He ' inaugurated an annual convention for tbe promotion of agriculture and dome-ale manufacture, known over the country as the Arlington sheepabeariog. Thwe gatherings were at Arlington spring beneath tbe shade of a venerable oak nar the banks of the Potomac. For uany years, on the 30th of April, the annual shearing took place, a large concourse gathering to tee the ceremonies Prizes, provided at tbe expense of Mm. Custis, were awarded to those prceoting the bet-t specimens of heep wool and domestic manutures. He had at one time a hrge and splendid flock of sheep of thechoiccst breeds, which, how ever, were plundered by thieve and dog", till at ht only two remained, and tbee for several jears held solitary sway in the domain. Mr. Custis took delight in paintings; but the six paintings now hanging in the hall of the Arlington mansion, representing battles and revolutionary incidents, painted by him, evince rather a sorry capacity in the author iu that direction. Tbe walls of this mansion were, however, adorned by some fine specimens of the art. Among them were several eplecdid original portraits of Washington one by the elder l'eale, another by Stewart; aod there was also a beautiful portrait of bis mother, by the latter named artist. All these family pictures were taken away by the Lee family when they went into the rebellion. The mansion is now occupied by the officer in command of the post and his subordinated. Tbe dining ball is o?ed as an office In this room ore three old-fashioned book ce?es, containing some four hundred volumes, principally old booksbroken sets, and of very small value. The parlor adjoining the ball is not occupied, tbe only article in it being a mahogany side board, which came from Mount V eraon. Id the parlor be jond are two sofas and six stuffed mahogany chairs, covered with scarlet velvet; two marble-top tables, aside board, and a piino stool matching the chairs. Oa the wall are several coarse large portraits, and cce or two fine oil paintings. There are also two old engraving, of a classical, mythological character, hanging with the rest. The room ia the southerly wing, and u?td by Oeneral Lee as bis office, is now cecd as a bedroom; aod all tbe tipper part of tbe mansion is used for a like purpose. The building is no: in jured. Tbe flower garden has been inclosed by a new fence, and lud out ard tastefully adorn ed this spring. Tbe grave of each soldier is neatly marked by a wooden slab at the head and foot, pttateJ white, inscribed with the name of tbe soldier and hia company and regiment, and at a little distance theje slabs hue tbe appearance of marble. The mounds are to be neatly covered with sod. Geo. Robert Edmund Lee is the ton of Gen. Henry Lee of tbe revolutionary memory, acd known as "Light Horse Harry," whose mother was the beautiful Miss Grime, Geo. Washington's first love, and whom he celebrated as " the lowland beauty. Gen. Harry Lee was twice married. By the first msrriage be bad two children, Henry (an of5:er in the war of 112) and Lucy.
