Th backbone of tbe rebellion cow it evi dent'y LiE array about Hicbaconl and everj meremtot b!ch crlrple that jower weaker.a the caa which it defend. Tber is no qacitirn but Lxc It more ralarrad in procurio j roTibci to lasUlo hit rmy ia its present jx)iticn . than from all oiuer cacsea cortDineu. Virginia cannot be derecdeJ upon for mrslici. Tie coo ut drain opon her t'nca the commrrjcenest of tfct rebellion hai mtteriallj weakened, if it baa not c,o it exhausted her abiltv to do more than icsUtn the ton combümti upon her coil. A geutletneo who I1 been ia RichrooDj, and who la weil informed a to the tree condition of a IT in in Virginia, informs ua that there baa been rcartitj of jrovision in that atate for a Ion while, and the eontaat call opon ibe joplo for food for the reVl army liTe reduced them to the last extremity. For Mn timat the ouly aurrdu has been in the cot ton state, and fruo thence have been dran the applies to feed the armies about Richmond TL: fact sires iuaporULce to the rcoreirer.j of Snrtvix. The leadict? object with bim from the lime be cut Ioom from Atlacta and marcbe o Bueceaafully through Georgia, ha. -a beeu to de stroy commurlcatioa lieiweea the cotton täte and Richmond. Hence, it on be een that evert eomaauaication he cut with the rtbel capital wai triadeg a fnal blow at the hetrt ar d strength of the rebellion. One by one tboe rouree-a of ?jpplj hate been cut off in Suihjjam'a victorious march until only a Irsle artery wa ' left, and that of.limited capacity, and that too baa been materially crippled, il the report of ti e reaulta of SnaKina.x'a recent raid are reliable. The destruction of the canal running from LjLchburg U Ricbuioud made but little difference to Lit'a array, fur it furbished ?carre!y any food. Bot, if Buraiuax vn successful in evtrelj crippling the Danville railroad, which has probnbly tarnished, lately, the main portirn of ibe food for the rebel army in Virginia, lie hat dealt it a severer blow than would be a victory over the enemy in the field. The apje.il of Oer. Li a to the people for food aud forage in al evidence that his sources of aipply hire been materially restricted. Soldiers cannot fight without food. And if not well fed with who'eaome and nutritious t ubsiatetice they will be incapable of enduring long and fatitfuiti campaign, eape cully when confronted with a foe of overwhelming numbtrg and in the beit C(:iditi-m. It it probable, if this representation of the condition of rebel affairs is correct, th it Lrr will attempt to bold Richmond agaii.et eucii oddsT Why would the abandonment ol Richmond, except for iia moral effect, be any more damsgipg than the eurrender of Siracuah, of Cimlcstori, or of Wilmington? If Grant cati hold Lra in Richmond, and at the ainie time cut oil' hi aupplirs, of course the doom of his army U ealed, and it will be the cheapest beeauaa a bloodless triumph. Thin i a riw of the condition of affairs, jo for from our fUr.d point, anil if :!ic pcculitiui a hotild prore realities, we may bope that the war will not long be procrastinated at least in it present magn:tu!e Cat there is another tie of the rtruzg! They uuderptand their weaknesses and their embarrassment better than we do. Belo Jntf to the eame race we mut eapect thej will struggle with aa much energy and determination against a corqucst which implies degradation a9 we would. The history of the struggle thus far has fhown that they will yield a point which they tare defended with pertinacity, when the contest becomes unequal or requires to great a sacrifice of life. Charleston suceemfally resisted a furious uaral siege and bombirdmcnt for a jer, and so it nay be sail of other place, but they were abandoned promptly when the fate of war o decreed. 11 ever much we may desire peace and a restored un'oti, we cannot hope for an early termination of the war under the policy it ia prosecuted. For nven loDg years our father atrug.jled in an unequil ortest rather than secure peiee by iurrenJer with the dcgr.id ition which would accompany it. Hunnn i:.ttur has not changed. The facts are not new, but are collected in a readable manner, lt is something to be able to gat out of this raging war, back an indefinit number of yrs, to the times of tho-e unanown, nomadic, intelligent, indu'riou- tribes which dujr copp.er ou I'oiut Keweenaw, built mouna in Illinois, Mi-.-ouri, Ohio, Indiana. Wet Virginia, and all along the valley of the Mississippi, and finally made their exodua into Mexico, Central America ami Peru, bevond which lstter point they have not been tricaJ. Our obje'-: ia calling attention to this topic of antiquarian rcrgarch is not to recapitulate the facta which have been accumulated, nor to attempt to give any outline ol the rival theories of the oiigin, period, and final late cf the race er race which dwelt on this continent at a tiu:e beyond the traditions of the North American Indians, but only 10 remark thai here ia a great opiorlunity for profound ethnological research. The subject, fascinating us it must be to every person witü a dash of antujuarianism in hU compusitiou, ha tcctived but h:t!c notice. Had the mound builders lived and died in the o'd world, th. rastery which now environs then would probably have been long ag-j di.-tip;ited. The French and Er.glirdi gov ern merit- would have viol with each other iu fitting out tcieutific commissions to study up the whole question, without regard to time and eipen?e. The learned bodies ot Lurope would have givt.i thtir patronage to such cntorprirCt', ad would have placed laurels on the brow of the suecc?-dul discoverers The oi l world would have h tiled with enthusiasm every step towards lh solution of a problem h:ch so challenges human curk sUy in it noblest and worthiest sense. Itut in America all this is reversed. The history of the marvelous pro Indian race po.se.be so little interest for the government, that no official investigation of the subject has ever been ordered. The neare-a approach t an official work was tbe publication of Mr. 3 juiers" re irehea on American antiquities, which constituted the first volume of the "ismithsttniau Contributions tJ Knowledge." It is an excellent bonk .- far as it goes. It is the ouly one w hi h professes to treat of the question in detail. Some yetrs ngo Col Whittlesey, cf Ohio, published a serits of valuable p.ipers on the mounds of that state, subniittiiic r dence to piove that there were many varieties among them, ome having been erected for the observance of religious right, others aa tomb and monurnent3, others &3 obserratories, others lor purposes of security and defense. He had. devoted much labor to the opening and examination of the mounds, and restatements, so lar as Ohio ia coLcarted, are sufficiently full and precise. The new American CytlopedU costf.ns a good article on American autiquities, and occasional documents of a similar character may be found scattered through the published proceedings of historical eocieties, aad scientific associations. But there is still wanting a systematic and complete inreitigation of the history of the mound-builder?, ia all their wanderings from Behring Straits (if at is generally supposed they came over from the old world by that route) to their vanishing point in South America. Tbe work must be undertaken not by individuals r.or by societies, but by separate states or by the general government. It will require the labor of a number of persons ol high cientific attainment?, for a period of several years, and the expenditure of considerable money t prepara a connected and logical history of those wonderful people, as it may be traced in the series of gigntir landmark's which they have lelt along tl line of their travels, as if fur the very purpose ol supplying food for study and thought to futnre generation New York Jour, of Commerce. But this is not the moi-t dsiu'erous use of stimulant-. It roiy not be known to a majority cf ocr rc idfrs, but it is Umentsbiy true that, as a people, American? are greatly given to the use of opium. Fur our pre-ent purpose wo need not decide whether the peculiar nervousness exhibited bv the people of this country is the cau?e or the cllVt of this habit; but the Pta?ietic3 which mark the increased consumption cf the e stern nircoti-: are quite alarmiDg. JSevcril months sirce we prepared for the ue of a rru'öical writer in this city, a statement of the annual imports of opmm , into the h mted ciaies since tne year i cao. c unuer-ioou r.i the time, that they would be given to the public in a shape to be eppecially u:-eful in the way of wartime and rebnhe, f.nd it aiay be that such use has been made of t'iem in Fome medical journal which has not fallen under our notice. We have before us Ibe figures then compiled, which show that while .4d,s7-l paid th foreign cojt of all the opium importei at the prts of the United State in 1810. it took :932 67 to r ay tht cost in the year ending June 3'l, 162; an increase from forty thousnnd to nenrh ore million dollars in l?-c. thsn twen!j-ve vcarj. It is truo that th meticsl br.reuu ccnrected with the armv is r sponsible lor a po rtion of this incrc iie s'nee the war began; oat the sutistic show a very heavy consumption of opium previous to the war, tho imp rts for the year ending June 30, lb-GO. averjging over one hundred and twenty thousand per annum. 'This is an enormous amount for tho con-ump.tion of this country, and phowg that a large number of the people mut use this drug habit i illy in some form lor the gratification of their cravings for a stimulant. There tntybe less disgrace connected with its use, but the effects, mental aud phvHcal, ere far more irjtirious than. those which follow the abuse of alcoholic drinks, while the habit is much less ea'ly cured or retrained. Ttic Problem to Come From The N. T. Tini". Many oi our people have very unreasonable expectations in regard to the loa ally cd the inhubi tarts of Stvannih and other captured cities of the south. We shotId ditrust all pro testatiors of vehement love for the Union Irom tho-e who luve been fighting or aiding in the re beliion against it. All we can reasonably ex pect of these people at tho outset is, that thev should submit gracefully to their defeat, that they should acquiesce in the re-establishment of national authority, and obey tbe laws, promptly and peace.ibly, ol the federal government.
