Kiog James region.) Teert can b to docM, bowcm, that after the conversion of the Emperor CoosUotioe, when the church began to exercise iti mission with taOre freedom than bad been granted her dorins the era when his credecesora awayed the eepter of tb Komm Empire, the fast of Lent was inilittd on b? tb church at treans of humbling th pride of the proud patrician who hid teen cortrted from pagaruirn, and bj lAtc'iv.g an iu terrJJet on the lutnptcoca liting in which tbey Indulged, brought theai core full? to a consideration of the eternal destiny which awaited them in tht "great hereafter." However thia may be, it ia certain that the early writers, both religiooa 'and profane, speak of the Lenten institution a exercising a moat beneficial effect both a to the morals acd the general health of the people of thos age. As time advanced, and Christianity ppread it aelf over the world, the severe austerities which in earlier day characterized the obsetTenc of Lent, were aomewh&i mitigated, and the season was made to consul of the prescribed fast (rarj ing in rigor in different countries), and the cherishing of that internal religions spirit of the eaaonf without which, the church u&tti a acre cocaplUncw with the fast is tiseleaa. Both the Catholic and Episcopal churches observe the Lenten season, and hare peculiar religious exercises adapted ta it (those of the latter church beicjt laid do wis id the book of common prayer); but the fast i, except in the cae of High Church Posejltee of the episcopal denomination, praeti calif and generali observed only among Catbo lies. In the coontrie of southern Europe, more especially in IuIt, a short time previou to the cotBtneneenvent of Lent Is devoted to ?port and pastimes, and thi9 season of erjoytnent, popularly known ee tberarnivaf, is made the most of by alt cleave and conditions of society. Venice and Home have ever been particularly noted fur the observance of this pre Lenten Feon; and in the latter city, the Corso is the scene where fuu and frolic, up to the hour of t weite on Shrove Tuesday nint (immediately preceding Ah Wednesday, or the tint day of Lent), are "wild, f-;t and furious." Evvy one wLu ap;.cis on the Corso (the great Roman thoroughfare), on thin evening, U lat&ke.l, and bears in his ban J a lighted candle, the flame ot which he Hied to preserve while he endeavor' to extinpnt-h that of bta neighbor. At miiLiht precis I a gu Cred from the Castle of Si. Angel. j, .mnounce that Leut commence!, wiieti itiMntaneou?lv all the lights are extineuiheJ, the revellers re tire, and gloom and silence take the place of the previous light acd hilarity, and so taJ the carnival. On Ash Wednesday morning the religiou cervices of the season commence. The prefix Ah L derived fiom the custom, univcrs-al throughout the Catholic church, of the prirgt markiug the foreheadi of the faithful with a?hes Licked for the occasion, announcing to ech one a? he doe so the memento mori, or, as it is generally rcn dered in Engliöh, "Remember O inau, that tluu are dust, and unto dual then halt return!" Throughout the entire season the churches are kept open to give an opportunity to all who are disposed to visit them, and by frequent prayer and earnest contrition, to prepare themgelvea to receive worthily the sacraments of penance and holy encharut, i. e. confession and communion At this season, too, the most powerful preachers exercise their eflurL. to turn their hearers away from things of eirth to things eternal, and to implant within them the seeds of repentance for the evil they have done. Passion Sunday (falling thU year on the 2 J of April) is thb first principal festival following Ah Wcdceaday. The color of the vestments en this day is purple, and all the decorations of the altar and church are then covered with cloth of the same hue. The exercises of the day and the covering of thee decorations are premonitory of the pd?ion of our Divine Lord, which the church is, within two weeks to celebrate after the manner as it were of a crei drama. -The following Sunday Is Palrn Sunday; so called from the custom observed throughout the eastern church, where the priest on this dy blesses leaves of palm and distributes them among the faithful, who bear thdm home with them. In countries where palm cannot be obtained (as la the United States), boughs of cedar . or some other evergreen are blessed and distributed. Many of our readers have doubtless noticed oar Catholic fe'.low-citizeos men. women and children returning from worship on this day, each bearing a grten twig, and have wondereJ as to its meaning. The fa;t above narrated will afford an explanation. The derivation of this custom U claimed to be found in the scriptures, where, as the apostle tells us (Matt, xxi, r. 6 and 0. Kins; James's version), when our Savior entered Jerusalem riding oa an ass,' very great multitude spread the gar menu ia the way; others cut down branches from the trees and ctrewed them in the way. And the multitudes that went forth and that followed, cried, saying, Ilosanna to the Son of David: blessed i he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hoanna in the high est." This latter joyous exclamation is preserved and recited in the mass, in Latin, at all times; it is the Benedicta qui tenit in nomine Dominie, and at high mass is always one ol the choicest selections of that grand music which accompanies the ceremonial of the altar. Following Talm SunJay is Holy Week, or that peculiar time more especially than any other in the year devoted to a typifictti ..not the orrows and sufferings of our Divine Redeemer, which culminated ia the crucifixion on Calvary and the disenthrall men t of mankind fron the bondage of Satan and ain. On the TLuisdav of this week, known as Maunday Thursday or Holy Thursday, these typical religious exercises becin. The Sacrament of the Lord Sapper, or Eucharist, is commemorated, and in all the churches a separat akar is erected, known as the .repository, to which is trinferred from the mia altar the sacred specie, accompanied by a rrocesion of priest, acolytes and comauaicant, chanting the the bytnn Vant lingua gloriota. This repository is always adorned iu a mmeer as tasteful and coetty as the wealth of the congregation will afford. Before the altar, also, uota the host is transferred bick on the following day to the main altar, there is kept cp what is called the "continual adoration" throughout the whole night; that is, two pernor , generally nlcoiytes, dressd in caock and surplice, are always kneeling before this altar enssged in prayer; the first two being .relieved at the end of an hour, and so on until the stcred species are removed. Thousands of the faithful also !-it the churches daring this day and ciht, ech adult mating it a iwint to visit and pray before different repositories. Uod Friday 'follows Monday Thursday, acd this day is the only one during the year on which a sacrifice of the masses is cot offerf-d up; that is no consecration of the bread and witei ma Je on this day the officiating priest at each chtrch coDsumin the species which had been consecrated ted placed ia the-repository ca tie previocs day. in the manner just rnentioo. The adoration of the cro is the prominent feature of this day 's exercise, it biat: the anniversary of our Lcrj'ji crucifixion After the priest h mcf hi ado ration before the crucifix the congregation corre forward and evince their firm belief in the greit muttry of mac's redemption by ueout!v anJ humbly kisiicsj, while oa their krer. the feet of the im.pe typical of the cruc.fied Savior, hieb the priest Lo'.J at the altar ril. An extra fast b alto generally cWrved on tb!s dir. though the regulation lor Let t in this country do nut prescribe it. Aaioug the tery pious, however, nothing ia eaten to dy ur.t'.l sundown, at d then only a small amount of bread is partaken of. This is really the mot fVie rcn festival in the whole year in the minds of c-.thoHr, r.-i in cattoLc countries everytb'nf; and every bodv wear a subdued and mournful pe:t. The churches are draped in black, n ir.-tru-ctc'i accompany the mournful cadence lJ nurvrrr of the priests and rhori.-ters, no bells re rung, and everjth:n betokens that the recurrence of this axurcrsarj has brought t gloom and sadecti to the heart cf the Catholic world.
Oa this day, la Roai. is funT the far-faaed Miserere, perforaed eclj at the I Pope's chapel, and ca Good Friday aloce mcaksl coapöiitloa which has erer attracted the attention of til lorenof tarnsosr. J Twecty-fw male voices only tale part In It, no instrument whatever belag allowed to accompany them; and yet the music they create is so sorrowfully sweet acd dolorously enchanting fifwecaybe allowed to cse such a paradox; that persons hare bees known to be totally overcome by it, ard to faint way in ecstatic . of delight on its rendition. Wherever this Misturt is finished, the ncore mo sic is taken in charge by the off.cer who is Us custodian, an J until it is agiln required for ue remains under lock and key. The origin of this wonderful production is involved in mystery, and not even the rost noted musicians of any age have erer pretended to unravel it. Not even at the Vatican can any one gie information as to when the Mifn-ere wa-5 compoed, or who was the composer. . Many Lterory trarclers have given descriptions of this composition, but none more beautifully thin a celebrated American, who calls it " orgies upon orm, hirps upon hirps, ar.d ticbrcli wRJ out number." Holy Saturday follown good Friday, and is the lat day of Lent. As on the latter day the crucifixion was celebrated, so on this day is commemorate;! the entombment of our Savior. At the sacrifice of the mass on this day, the ofSciat ing pr'0t conaumes or receive the sacred species which were consecrated on Holy Thursday; and after he has intoned the Gloria in Excehis Deo the music of the choir (instrumental) . is again brought into requisition it having been omitted since the Gloria on Maunday Thursdsy the altar and church bells ring forth the glad tidings that man's redemption has been achieved; and that though the body of the Soa of God lies within the Arimathetn tomb, yet death and hell have been forever vanquished. From this time forward everything wears a more joyous apect, and at early dawn on the day following (Easter Sunday) in Catholic countries the pealing ol cannon and the ringing of bells of all kinds, sizes and descriptions announce that Lent has ended. The church, on Easter, arrays herself in her most gorgeous and glittering robes; the solemn drapery of Good Friday gives way to the richeet of decoratioi.f; gems, diadema aDd precious stones adorn the altars, and shed their sparkling scintillations over the entire sanctuary; the misertre is replaced by grand alleluias; organs and orchestras send fcr.h their harmonies, and everything in and about the churches give evidence that the faithful enter with zest and spirit into the spirit of the hymn cf the grand festival: re fir qvam fteit Dominut$ exultemnt tt Ittaemur in ea this is the day that the Lord hath made; let U3 rejoice and be glad therein.
