Thia is the lastspriug till we reach Granite Rock." 30 miles dUuut. There i excellent bench grass abut it, and plenty of cedar and pibe trees, of medium growth, for fuel. The water ia a little aaliish, but to pilgrims cf th de?rt " it Is full of comfort for man acd beast. Trora thia spring, called Cedar Mountiin Siting, we wind alowly up the canyon to the summit of the mountain, about two miles distant, over no eil d eased road but along a track cot at all adapted to vehicles, and which gave ua heavier drawing than any we Lad hid aince leav. iog- the Missouri river. After "doubling team" and great exertions of man and beast, we reached the summit, having been from sun-up till two o'clock p. m. in traveling two miles. Here cor terrified vision was greeted with treat granite precipices rising up mmy bucdre J feet on either nidi of the track, which plunged almost perpendicularly down a narrow rocky point tnd over deep gorges acd across other points covered with granite bouldera acd peering over deep, dark cbaama far below. Down far into the canyon, over these frightful heights, we must descend or co back. To go down seems impossible; to go bick is nearly as difficult. We resolve to go for ward, and accordingly erery pica, spade ana axe in the train of four wagons is put in requisition; and we commence digging out a wall. After this preliminary etep we let down our wagons with ropes over the ateepest declivities of the rond, and then move on till we come to where the road ascends a sharp point jutting out so far into the canyon that we can't go round, bot mut go over it. Here we have to "double teams;" and thus we toil on till far in the night we f nd ourselves in the sandy plain below, a dicUnce of three miles, which we had been laboring faithfully to inverse for over ten hours. But, here we mr.at net stay. It was fully twenty five roiie yet to "Granite Rock." though it was in sight, and there was the netret water, unless we went back to Cedar Mountain Spring. We revolved to struggle on, as ourselves and our animals were already suCerine for water, our little atock which we carried with us in wa tvr-casks, being exhausted. All eight long wo traveled over a sandy desert and alkali flattf, the mountain whereat we were to " cool our pirchei tongue" all tin while visible in thetarlibt. But it was cot until day-light that wc entered the canyon at the upper end of which we found the longed-for springe. ,.- Fat Wr.sT. MEDICAL. tSVfm vnT.T.
