Our troops still hold their position in front of the rebl wotks which are very strung and well defended, ow ing to the nature of the country in the vicinity.
Grant Operations. Nkw York, August 17 Interesting details of the movements of Gen. Grant's last Sunday show that the main line of the rebel works ex tend along a commanding ridge crowued by formidable earthworks all along the crest. Iu front of this maiu defensive line, however, a series of rifle pits, intended as a strong skirmish lite, proem that it was designed M un effective obstacle to our advance. Early in the moruing a portion of the troops on the left under cormuaud of Gen. Birney, ru.-hed onward, charging in gallant style, and almost wit . out firing a shot drove the enemy lrom bis r.tle pits, capturing about 100 prisoners, among whom were officers aud privates from ten different regimentTbe enemy retreated iutö their main entrenchments. Daring the afternoon our troops drove the enemy trom an important position at the junction of the Kingslsnd and Newmarket roads, ou the toule to Richmond, und the Foster brigade by a charge captured the rebel guns from Strawberry Pl iii s. Other troops advauced on the roads leading tow nds Richmond. The cavalry under Greg: took the Charter City rosd, where, alter a sharp engagement, the Hü rapt on rebel legion was driven in considerable cou'usiou, retiring at lust in a northerly direction. Eiriy in the evening Gen. Barlow with a portion of i.a command charged our ride pita and took them. The enemy resisted stubbornly with musketry and artillery, but our men assaulted a position i - '! t of insulated crest, and took and now hold it. Our position is such that Lee must recall his force operating north under Early, and in addition must come out aud fight iu front of his works this week or wholly retire within the Richmond delen.-es From 3 civ York. i.w Yotk, Angus! 17.
