Speech of Governor .Morton. L ist right at about half past 8 o'clock M tsonic was visited by numerous citizens The preliminaries of the meeting having been arranged bv the appointment of Elder J. B New piesioent, O A. Burgers. W tu Wallace, Colonel Joi.es, J. P.Jones and Rev. J P. Jones, nd Kev J me Tarkinjrton vice presidents, secretaries) Harry Rates hikJ Col. Smiutd V.mce, Gov. Mortop. greeted with loud cheers, came forward aud spoke in substance as follows: He said he had been p lined to see the malig pity with which the recent call of ttie NorihWeteru Governors had been received here in Indiana. He would not say that the war would be concluded this year, and he realized the tact that the call now made would make a drall upon the indu-trial interests ot the North West He would grai.t that f act. He realized it as well as any other man. But this year the war must be triumphantly concluded. It was to promote thi successful conclusion that the Governors had made this call. He had found on his return from Washington more oppo-ii ion to this call among anorganizi Hon calling themselves Democrats than he had exacted. It came from enemies ot their conn try in the North, who oppose everything for the good of the country. He said he held hi his hand a copy of the Indiana State Sentinel. It whs chaiged theiem that the North western States were being depicted lor the purjose of screening New tinlaiid. He defied his audience to pick up a Dciuo raiic paper that did not teem with articles against New England. He read extracts from recent numbers of the Indiana Slate Sentinel. He objected to the term "small ,ottto politicians" and "stayat Lome patriots," all of which allusions were infamously false. The man who penned it knew it to be false. He talked about taking 2 t.OOd men from our agricultural pursuits. That editor and those who acted with him would rejoice to see thai many Union men leave the Slate. We had not only had the help ol ths leaders of the Democratic party, but we had to overcome tl.eir opposition at every step. Ther had opposed every call lor the last two years. They opposed the present call with more malignity than ever. Mind you, I do not say that mai y Democrats have not entered the army, but they nave done it in defiance of their le.tdeia. You know that this verv piper the Sentinel has told the lartners of Iudi.ina that greenbacks weie worthless that United States Slocks would fall still lower. Every thing which would militate agtiiist the government had been urged by thai sheet; yet with peculiar maliguity thai paper opposed ihese C alls. It opposed it because there would be experienced soldiers wheu they came back able to repel invasion ou our border or subdue leoellion at home. He bad been called upon heretoiore to save that newspaper Irom Obstruction. He did it not because of any respect lor the editor or proprietors, but because he desired that the laws should be obeyed. He would nol sav that he would do the same thing ugiin Flty thousand veierat.s nullit turn the scale of this campaign and save the nation. To let this hfty thousand go the call had been made by the G.iVeruora. Tlie.se new re. runs, for one hundred days would do garrison duty and enable General Grant to concentrate his forces. It would i ut us in position to repel mv sion ujoii our bolder-. Every efT rt to arm the peo; had bet n resisted by this pper, the Sentinel, because it said Abolitionists were Oein armed to put dou Democrats. He had defied that siieet, and although he had the Li.-datu.e against hun. the Siqreme Court agaiurt huu, and every State otlicer against him. and very little money , he had pei severed aud he wouid continue to per?e vere. ll;a Excellency insistel thit there wns a circle with. n a circle in the Democratic party. Theie was a treasonable orgauiz tioii wiihin it The Iflidtrs keut on the out skirts of it But if they dared to raire their IisiiOh against this Goven ment he would promptly employ these twti.ty thou-aiid men now called for to put them down. Their leadtts m'ghi just as well uti.ie.stand lliat al of;t e AH stories that these men were raised to interfere w ith ll-e elections was a humbug. The idea was ti nuke the present ctinpiigii a success. It was a responsibility to lake, to call for these men. He thought he had done ruht therein. If we fail now, all the blood and tiessure we hd expended would have been in vain. These m-n wanted this campaign to fail. They had w mted every other campaign to fail. We understand the kind of oppoitioii we have to meet at home. And for one, he ijteuded to meet it. We had gone too tar to go back. We mut succee 1. If we did not. uatioual ruin would overtake us He was, thetefore, lor a vigorous prosecution of the war. The great trouble was that we did not mke this war our business. He heard a mau say the other day if we did not succeed this year alter that he wou.d turn our attention to the war in earnest. In a financial point ot iew the rebellion was iu a belter fix thau we. That ws startling proposition but nevertheless the fact. Dowu outh ihe hd;ol to that point at Which they could do wi:hin money. We in the orth have money ; our armies must be paid. lie oeired to ru..ke this campaign an overwhelming one. He hid taken the responsibility ot ihi. call. He wt.uld take any respon sibility thai wou'd promote, iu his judgment, the welfare of the country. His Excellency paid a high and deserved eulogium upon the bravery and gallantry ol Indiana troops; Out Indiana w.u only a ptrt of this great nation. He depii-ed that feeling of jea!ou.y which lira up tnle betweenSew Eugland and the V est. The scheme of forming a North western Confedeicy was alive and ou lout in thia euj to night. His Excellency showed, as he looked at it, that the first step in tbi programme was to stop the war, and then Mississippi river interests would attach the North west to the Confederacy. The first proposition was to stop the ar, separate the West Irom the East, erect a North-weteru Cou lederacy which would ultimately be attached to the Southern Coulederacy. The next one hundred days from the lit of May would be the mort memorable in the histo ry of this country. The lite ot the nttiou ould be decided in that time. He railed upon all therefore to rally The Governor took his seat amid loud ap p.au-e. Messrs. Burgess, Thompson and Vance followed him. After that quite a number of volunteers were obtaiued trobably fifty in all. Adjourned.
