From tbe Cloricnatl Trice Current, March t. financial and Commercial ftummary lor ttae Iac Uerk. Tbsre b been a good demand for money during the week, withoutany special pressure in the market, and all the acceptable paper offered was taken at C to 8 per cent., and in some cases as high as 1U per cent. m obtained. The demand for exchtnjre hu been active an i fully i2 to the sunply, but toward the close the demind hid slacked off somewhat, and the supply was better, closiog steady at our quo tations. The advance ia gold toward the cloe of the week caused an uneasy feeling in financial circle; the opening price yeterdr wm lGlj. and the closing rate IHl''at nooii. The excess of imports over exerts, and he ?Utus of our armies, both combine to ciuse the advance, and we cannot see how it could be otherwise. There is a good demand for orders on Washington at 93t-. The Government bis refused to pay checks of a less amount than $2.000, which, under the rule, excludes all cash che?ks, an 1 all are now aid half ch and half certificates. The Government cdXctors had arranged go as to get small checks for a Urge portion of the'r claims, thus getting a greater amount in caah than bad been expected by the Treasury Department. The singularly slow and selfbh manner in which Congress has been legislating to provide for the revenue, is having a bad influence on the financial affairs of the Government, and this will become wore if more statesmanship aixl less wire fulling demsgogi?m is not displayed. Never did circumstances exi-t in this or any other nation, which demand the clearness, experience and dignity of the statesman, as those now existing in connection with our Government. The closing quotations for exchange, coin and government securities, at the close, were as follows: BUVINQ. Nw Tor par. OoW 2lKa); prem. Silvrr 5.V4.V prem. PELLISO. 1-10 pretn. 64 prem. 57 prem. QuartfrTtistfrs Vouchrr, citjr P9,'.'ä 03 The tive-tweuty bonds are selling at 111 for November dites, which includes the coupons roru that dste. The feeling at the close, in government securities, was quite unsettled, owing to the advance in gold. Business in the produce market has been quiet during the week, and without much change in prices, excepting corn, which has declined mite ria.ll j. Flour dull, but still has been bei J rather more firmly, owing to the reports of the eerious injury dne the growing wheat crop by the Ute se vere weather, but there h is been no change in ; pi ices. Corn declined materially, as distillers are buying, if at all, very sparingly in anticipation of hating to stippend for seine months under the new tax law, until the stock of whisky on hand is worked off Bye. dull at the close. Barley dull at $1 2d and $1 25 for prime spring and tail. ; The whiky tnatket as u?u.il his been greitly ! agitated 'under the action of Congress, but the' matket cloeed rather dull at e6c. The thought ; that it may be fiee of tax after the 1st of July I makes some of the holders anxious to realize. " I Clorerceed very dull, and what was offered in j the market on Monday had to be sold at $7 25, j but dealers are nevertheless selling mall lots at t $7 a. Tiuuthv docliued to $3 15.'J 23, and dull. Flax $2 552 CO. Butter very scarce and in demand. Cheese firm. A general quietness has ruled iu the provision nut ket, but holders are not disposed to make any important concessions in order to effect sales. There his been a steady demand for hams i in bulk ami curei in all sdvipes. 1 he high price of fresh meats will necessarily keen up a large dem ind for both hams und shoulders. The news fron. I.: v..f.....i ij ,ni1r.f.ir.,.i,.nnn ... i i . - i ! and tins has stopped the demand tor sides for that market. The grocerv miikct has been very firm, with a ! fair deinaud, but prices being as low, or nearly j so. as they ate in New York, dealers hive been I celling riparingly, under the belief that a further j material advance is ineritab?e. The advices from England by the last mails J arc quitrt unfavorable for breidstuffs, a marked! reaction having pet in after the excitement about the war in Demaik. A Liverpool letter of the l.'Uli ult. says: "The apprehensions of a general war on the! continent of Europe have, for the moment, su- ! tided into the belief that England will, under any probable circumstances, maintain a peaceful ! attitude: hence the muket for corn produce lna, relapsed into extreme dullness. Wheat his suf- j fered a further decline of 2d to 3d on red, and j fully Id on white, values being now pract'cally on a level witii the currency existuig betöre the late war excitement.
