TELECRAPWC; ftPOBTKD BiraXSSLT POB TW DAILT ITATK irnxEL. ioon Reports. RUMORED DEFEAT OF SHERMAN Itcbel Haid on the Chesa peake Bay, Gen. Grant on his way to Washington ITOITEIOIV NEWS. Debate in I'arliiuiicut on Ameri can AiTairs. THE GOVERNMENT DENOUNCED FOR DETAINING LAIRD'S RAMS. Ac., Ac.f Ac, Ac .Ac From'eiv York. Ntw York. March 7 The Tribune's correspondent announces the pafe arrival at Fortress Monroe of Colonel Dahlgren and 100 of his command. The Richmond Whig of the 3d fully confirms the Union accounts of General Kilpttrick's raid. The World has a rumor, vi.i New Orleans, that Sherman was defeated on the 13th ult., at Chunky river, near Meridian, with the loss of 15.0UU men, and his army broken up. Lee and Forrest's cavalry are reported in his rear. The story is tindoubtly a canard. The World's Washington special has the following: The rebel War Department has set on foot me isures to conscript 20,UU0 negroes to work on the fortifications around Richmond and elsewhere. Gen. Meade has relumed to theArmjofthe Potomac. A Hilton Head letter sajs: Gen. Gilmore has sent orders to Florid that in future only Jacksonville will be held by the United States, and no effort whatever made to occupy other towns. I-'roni Hal ti more. Raltimoee, Marco 6 There are exciting rumors in the streets of an extensive rebel raul on the Chesapeake, and that the steamer Louisiana, of the Norfolk line, had been captured by a party of rebels while on her downward trip to Fortress Monroe, and taken into one of the rivers of the Western Shore ol Virginia. Three other small boats have been captured. One of them is the side-wheel steamer running between Fortress Monroe and Cherry Stone Inlet the other two were tugs employed in running between the same points. The party making the captures were in a schooner which is supposed to have come out of the Rappahannock. They botrded the steamer and compelled Captain Webster to fjive bond to the amount of $20.000, and then released her. They stole $1,100 from the Captain. a From Cincinnati. Cincinnati, March 7. General Grant passed through here this morning en route for Washington. The Gazette has dispatches from Chattanooga which indicate that tbe rebel are pressing cur lines. Our advance has been withdrawn from Tunnel Hill to Ringgold The rebel furnaces at Atlanta stopped running for want of coal. Advices from Knoxville up to the 5th inst., say: Longstreet is supposed to be at Greencastle His forces hold Bull's Gap. Only a small part of his nrmy is in Georgia. Our advance is near Morristown. From St. IjOuIw. St. Loris, March 7 C apt. Hopkins, well known here before the war as a river Captain, nYrivel here on Saturday from Mobile on the lth ult. He says ihere were but 8,000 troops in Mobile, nnd thought the fortifications near the city were good, and that they could be carried only by a lar:o force. Sherman's movement frightened the people terribly, but a desperate reUnce would have breti m de had the city been attacked. Every male there between 18 and .r3 is w ell drilled. Foreign !ewt. New York, March 7, The steamer City of New York, which left Liverpool at noon on the 24th, Hrrtved at Southampton on the morning of the 5th. The Morning Post sajs: Rejiorta from 1'aiis nre still more positive that confidential regotiaiions are progressing between France and England for the joint recognition of the Confederacy, and if Kurland refuse:, France will net alone Dut the Tost declines to vouch for the rerort. In the House of Commons Mr. Seymour Fitz cerald deuounccs the Government lor seizins: Laiid's rams. He asserted th it euch action was in contravention of law. In moving for all correponJence on the eubject, he said he should deplore a war with America, but would rather go to war than that ihe law of England should be infringed in consequeiice of threats of foreign ambassadors The Attorney (eneral defended the Government and ext'laint d its legal action. He claimed that Government acted alone from a sense of justice. Several sutlers denounced the course of the Government, atxl charged it with pusillanimity; and others replied. Finally, the motion was rejected by a vote of 1S to 153, with loud cheers from tbe minutenal fide. Mr. Laird said it was true that with the con sent of the Hiitish and Araeiicm Governments tobacco had passed through the blockade at Richmond for the Austrian and French Governments. Encl.ti'd bud rrtaile no similar application for cotton, because the cae w is altogether different An immense meeting at Dublin to protest again.t the election of the Albert monument in College Green w;t- broken up by riotous proceed ings. A deperate tight took place, resulting in nothing serious. Additional particulars of I he Prussian repulse at Düppel are conflicting. One account looks disastrous for the Prussian, but the Prussian official account is the reverse of this, only ad mitting a loss of three killed an 1 about twectj wounded. It was asserted that Encland hd proposed a conference upoa the Dnirh pestion, wherein new basis for Atri and Prussia is to t pro posed. The Times regards this as hopeful for a settlement. It was asserted that the entente cordial be tween France and England is no longer doubtful The Emperor agrees to co-operate. Tbe Bourse was firmer. The following is a syt-npsij of tbe news sent out per the Sailor on the 22d: The Mp destroyed by the Alabasi was tbe Eddi Jane. In the House of Lords Erl Derby said be did cot istend to seai commissioceri to report upon the operations of tbe Lr.ion armies. 1 hre ofS cers had been tent to report cn iron clads, but for obvious reasom eo cEcer had been tent to the Confederate States.
