DAILY bgNrrmEI, TELECRAPHIC:
REPORTED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE DAILY STATE SENTINEL Noon Reports. THE FIGHT IN FLORIDA. DEFEAT OF GEN. SHERMAN THIRTEEN HUNDRED KILLED & WOUNDED The Reconnoissance to Dalton. The Enemy Found to be in Force. Longstreet Falling Back to Atlanta. Washington News and Rumors. &c, &c., &c., &c., &c. The Fight In Florida Defeat of Gen. Seymour. New York, February 27.--The Times says the steamer Fulton, from Port Royal on Wednesday last, arrived here at a late hour last night, bringing information of a sad reverse to our expedition under Gen. Seymour in Florida. We are unable to give details, because after the Fulton had put into the bay she was boarded by the Provost Marshal and Quartermaster, with orders from Gen. Gilmore to deprive the passengers of all private letters in the possession. To a passenger by the Fulton we are indebted for the following main facts of the battle: On the afternoon of the 20th our troops under Gen. Seymour met the enemy, 15,000 strong, 15 miles beyond Sanderson, on the line of the Jacksonville and Tallahassee Railroad. The battle was desperately fought during three hour, and at sunset our forces overpowered by numbers, retreated to Sanderson, taking with them a greater part of the wounded. The 7th New York, 421 Massachusetts, 48th and 150th New York and 8th United States were engaged. Col. Fricbly, 8th U. S , was left dead on the field. Col Reed, a Hungarian officer, was mortally wounded. All the officers of Hamilton's battery were wounded. Capt. Hamilton, wounded in the arm and Lt. Myrick. wounded in the foot, are at Gen. Giltnore's Headquarters, at Hilton Head. Col. Guy, of the 4th Massachusetts, had three horses shot under him. but escaped without injury. The Cosmopolitan arrived at Beaufort on Monday evening with 240 of the wounded. Col. Reed was among them, and was living when the Fulton left on Wednesday. The enemy's loss has not yet been ascertained. The enemy captured 5 guns. It is supposed that the troops were from Gen. Bragg's army. Gen. Hardee, himself was on the field, having come to Florida on a visit to his family and also to form a second marriage. Our loss is variously estimated at from 500 to 1,300. Seventy-eight rebel prisoners were brought by the Fulton. We understand that the Purser of the Fulton has a list of the killed and wounded which he will show but will not allow it to be copied. From Cincinnati. Cincinnati. February 27. The Gazette's Tunnel Hill dispatch of the 26th says that on Thursday night our troops fell back to Tunnel Hill, which place they hold. The recunnoisance has been entirely successful, developing the fact that the enemv is in force at Dalton. Claiborne's Division, which has been dispatched to reinforce Polk, was recalled and got back in time to participate in ihe fight. This was one important result accomplished. Our entire loss is 300 The rebels suffered more severely. A Commercial's Huntsville, Ala., dispatch say that the reliable information shows that Longstreat is falling back to Atlanta. A part of his force is supposed to have reached there on the 25th. A large portion of his force is without shoe, nuny nearly naked. Wheeler has been relieved from the command of the rebel cavalry by Breckinridge anl Buckner, who are preparing for a raid into Kentucky. From New York. New York, Feb. 27. A Washington special of the 26th says: The Senate Military Committee to-day unanimously agreed to report Gen. Pleasanton for confirmation as a Major General. There are no other vacancies. The Comptroller of the Treasury to-day sent to the Ways and Means Committee a communication proposing various changes in and amendments to the National Banking law. Several of the leading banks in New York have expressed a desire for such additional legislation as will enable them to participate in the benefits of the banking act. A sub-committee, composed of Messrs Hooper, Fenton and Stebbins, has been appointed to revise the banking law. The House Military Committee has decided to report a bill conferring upon the Provost Marshal General the rank and pay of a Brigadier General. The conference committee on the reveue bill, at their meeting; to-day. failed to agree. They will report on Monday. The World's special says: Representative Washburne will leave to day or Sunday for Chattanooga with Grant's commission as Lieutenant General. An important personage contacted with the Navy Department has been arrested in New York, and will shortly be examined . Tie Herald's Western Virginia dispitch reports a fight between Capt. Harper's company of Swamp Dragoons and some of Imboden's men at the mouth of Seneca river, but says nothing of the result. About a dozen refugees and deserters from Augusta, Va. , had reached Roalsburg. The Herald's naval correspondence, dated off Mobile. l6th, says The Hartford, having on board Admiral Farrngut, with six mortar schooners are with the fleet. It is rumored that the fleet will engage Fort Gaines to day Deserters stäte that there are about 20,000 troops in and around Mobile. Two iron-clads, the Tennessee and Nashville, are in Mobile harbor. The former mounts ten guns. The rebel programme is stated to be an ascent ol the Mississippi river by these vessels. the capture of New Orleans, at blockade of the river between there and Natchez In this they were to be assisted by the forces of Magruder and Taylor. Forty-five of the ringleaders in the recent mutiny at Fort Morgan were under sentence of death If executed, the feeling of horror engendered among the people will seriously injure the rebel cause in Mobile. The Herald's Matamoras letter.dated Feb. 5th. says: Gen. Herron is reorganizing his old division, and procuring supplies for future contingencies In the correspondence which passed between Gens. Peck and Pickett, relative lo the death of the rebel Col. Shaw, and the subsequent execution by the rebels of a negro soldier for his alleged murder. Gen. Peck encloses the President's order for retaliation.
The Times' Paris letter says: Since Mercier's arrival from America he has joined his efforts with those of Mr Dayton to put the French Government right on the state of the American war, and is using his influence to prevent violations of international law. From Cairo. Cairo, February 27. A raid was made on Mayfield, Ky., by guerrillas on the 25th. Considerable property was destroyed and carried off. In one place Mr. Happy, a prominent citizen, was killed
Over two hundred new recruits from Iowa arrived this morning, and about the same number yesterday Irom Indiana, en route South. From Washington. Washington, February 27. Advices received at the State Department from the Peruvian Minister at Japan, dated January 15th, state that the Alabama at that lime was still at large. MEXICAL.
