In the eeneral market, business continues in active and lifeless, but this iS usually the case at this season. The opening of trade on the Miss issippi improved the demand for pork and bacon, and holders put up prices, which checked the de mand, and although price sre higher, thev are. to some extent, nominal. The chief demand for provision, consequent upon the opening of the Mississippi, will doubtless come through the Government, a there i no doubt that a large num. ber of whites as well as blacks will have to be fed by the Government, for sorne time, in the valley of the Lower Mi-sissippi. Flour is dull and price nominal. Wheat declined to h7 and 9"c for prime new and old red, but recovered a portion ol this decline. Corn firm. Oats very dull, and not much demand. live very dull Whisky advanced to -lij'c, and has been iü good demand. In the grocery market there is but little new. The reported destruction "of fo'ir million dollar worth of sugar, in Havana, strengthened the market for sugar, but did not increase the de mand norc.uie an advance in prices. It jr many it is supposed thst the loss i exaggerated; however, in cae the report is correct, dealers- will wait the confirm ition of it before they operate upon thi basis. The amount given would indicate the lop of about lOO.OOdhhds. sugar Lin feed oil is dull and prices unsettled. It is being pressed on the maiket at $1 per cal. Edinblbu. Ind., July 29. ISG.'l. Epitcr Sr.NTisi.i: Permit me through therol umn of your paper to reply to a communication in your issue of this morning, signed H of Nashville, Ind., which communication charges that I have obstructed the due process of law in this vicinity, viz: that I have prevented a constable of the county from taking certain prisoners from this tovrnship. Now let me say to your credulous readers tint such i rot the cae. I oi.lv said to the constable. Mr. Huron Procise. that I wihed him to leave my son (a boy of about 15 years) in my store, where I had lfl him, as I was going to leave home on hnines which I could not postpone; that I would tie responsible for my bov and pay any fine that might le as.-esj:ei, or take the same to other courts tor adjustment; at the same time telling said constable that I was the marshal of the place (Edinburgh), and 'if the plaintiff or Sute witness would file his complaint in this township. I would render all assistance iu my power to bring guilty parties to justice. But, at the same time. I think I said to the constable, that I did not think it looked right to attempt to take a few young boys sixteen or thirty mile from home to try them for an offense committed here, where the accused and the accuser were in a manner neighbors. I was informell that the State w itness or plaintiff in this case lives about three miles from thi town. I do emphatically say that I did not use any 1urli language in the wav of threats or otherwise, ard did not order him to release any prisoners in fact, I did not see that he had any prUoner. 1 did not say th t I would arreat hini and take him to Indi mK!is; on the contrary, when I aki him for hi- n true and wrote it down with a pencil in my memorandum, he appeared excited, and asked me if I wa going to mret him for having the pipers upon him; when I answered in the negative, and left him atur saying that I thought he had letter not take any of th boys to Hensley township to try them for the offeuse ehsrged . My fiiend "H" says in hi communication that certain citizens of Hartholomew aid Brown co-jntie were set upon by a mob with knives, stone, etc.; which charge. I think, is false I know of but one person who said anything of the kind. In regard to military comp nies in this place, I will say that they have no connection of anv kind with the would be great inult to the dignity of t'te law. but are legitimate companies forming for the State Legion, and coci;ocd of rood citizens of all political parties, for the laudable purpose of u-taining our State and national gov ernmer.Ls. atid I hive Deter heard a memUr cf either company y tbat they would assist to do an unlawful act or in any way resi-t the due pro ce of civil law administered according to law. And far a home ruard are concerned, it is all a "cerf." Furthermore I can mj, that the c ntble of Uetndey township, or any other le gal officer, can come to this town or township and arrest, without a posse, any boy or man without any fear or molestation from any citizens, ptt lar as anything that I know of io the case is roc cerr.ed. 1 can furthermore say that I don't fear any collision at this place between the officers of the lair ltd ant citizen of Editburg.
