The enlistment made without the knowledge or consent of the boy' father, and, at the time, the boy was birely sixteen years ofage. The first intelligence the petitioner had from hia on was that he w in Virginia; the neit intelli gence he received was that the boy was ling in the hoapiu! at Grafton, Virginia, very danger ously ill. The petitioner upon the receipt or thi intelligence ttarted at once to Gralton. where he remained with his son some time, and succeeded in obtaining a furlough and brought bis son. tili very ill, hotna with him. After his arrival home, the boy reported to Dr. J. S. Bobbs, Medical Inspector, who directed him to remain at home, a be was unfit for service. The boy was also reported several times to Col. Kraden, a few days before the appliescaWioti w made by Mr. Marvel, bad ordered the boy to te arretet a a deserter, but at the time the officers viited Mr. Marvel's houe for thi this purpose, the boy was away from home. On the Monday lolloping, petitioner called upon dpt. Kradea and had an interview withbira, rel tie to the arre.t of hi sou. The Captain then requested Mr Marvel to bring the boy to hi of ficeon the WedredT following, between one and two o'clock io the afternoon, which Mr. Marvel greed to do. In one of hi letters upon the Catholic question, in which he was advocating the policy of conciliating the Catholics of Ireland, he said: "It is very difficu't to make the mas of mankind believe that the state of things is ever to be otherwise than they have been accustomed to se it. I have very often henrd old jersons describe the impossibility of miking anyone believe thit the American Colonies could ever be separated from this country. It w;i always considered as an i.lle dream of discontented politicians, good enough to fill up the period of a speech, but which no practi cal man devoid of the spirit of party considered to be within the limits of possibility. There was a period when the slightest concession wou'd hve satisfied the American; but all the world w is in heroics. One set of gentlemen met nt the Lamb, and another at the Lion; blood and treasure men breathing war, vengeance and contempt; and in eight years after ward att awkward looking gentleman in plain clothes walked up to the drawing room of St. Jnie, in the midst of the gentlemen of the Lion and the Limb, and was introduced as the Ambassador from the United States of America."
