raaroaraa atraaaai.rvara ami rrars ssariasv. ioon Report. from naltlmr. Baltihobc, July 2 The American learn from parties who left Gettysburg at coon to-day that everything was progressing favorably forth ultimate success of oar arm. Up to that time they assert that upwards of 6,000 prisoners had. teen captured ccd sent to the railroad terminus at Union Bride for transportation to Baltimore. Gen. Schenck has just announced that he hat in hi. possession 2,4 XJ prisoner in Baltimore and at the Relay House. We learn that nearly 1.000 of thoe were captured oo Wednesday by the 11th corps in their gallantcharce on Longgtreel'a corps. They eeerned to falter slightly at first, but when Gin. Howard cried to them, Rememt. "I II fll t .1 tJ". -t I oer ioanceuorsTiiie, iney rusneo, into ine Dgnt f like infuriated demons, and the whole line of the enemy gave way before them. During the early part of the day, up to noon, when our informant left, there had been no general battle, though heavy skirmishins had been coinjt on all morning, resulting in heavr loss to the enemy, and the capture of over 5,0(K) prisoners in all. Thee ekirmohe, which were conducted under the direction of Gen. Meide, were entirely iuccensful to our arms. The enemy studiously avoided anygeneraal engagement, and it wai thought there would be rone before to day, when It was to be the intention of Geu. Meade to pres the enemy along hi whole, line. It w i found irnpoesihle to m-tve our artil lery, or to pet our troop into position until thi morning, when a genernl advance was ordered. Gen. Rohicbams, Mjor General Commanding. From Ilaltimore. Baltimokk, July 31 A. M. The American ha th following. We learn from Major Bumgardner ami other officer of Gen. Reynold' staff the followiu? interesting particular of the battle near Gettysburg, nnd iire happy to state th.it it ha closed for the day with Gen. Meade' army In a most advantageous position for either mu attack or defense. At nine o'clock on Wednesday morning the 1st and 11th army corps re tchcil Gettysburg, going from tho eat side of town, and marched directly through to the west side. A c-ivalry force of the enemy was, in town, but galloped blick as wc advanced. In passing out nt the west end of town, the enemy were ol verted advancing rapidly in line of battle from Ch.ambersburg toward the town, evidently endeavoring to hold an advantageous and commanding position of the town. The first corps under Gen. Reynolds, which wa in advance, pushed forward at double-quick. A foon as they secured au advantageous posi tion, the enemy, under Lotmstreet and Hill, advanced Hcadily. and in a few minute a heavy fire. Iioth artiliery and musketry, opened along the whole Federal and Rebel lines. The 1 f th :irui v corps, under Howard was also soon in position and for a time quite a heart battle r ii red. Several clnrc wete made by the enemy to dislodge our force. all of which were entirely unsuccessful. At three o'clock the enemy massed his entire for.es and etideivorel lo turn our right wing. Reynold advanced to meet them, and a heavy infantry fiht ensued in which Inith sides sullered severely. Volley after volley of musketry l ein: poured into the enemy with deadly effect, the field be tween the contending armies was strewn with dead ar.d wounded. It t :iid that the enemy mi tiered fullvas heavy as we, th'-ugh it i not known what their loss wa. iu officers. The effort to Hank our right wing entirely failed, and we held th prominent and command' inir portion for which the stru''!;li was made at the close of the fight, which ceascl for the dav at about four o'clock 1'. M. The great decUire battle i con-idered imminent, nnd notwithstanding oi.r -evert- lo? in olficer, the advantages ot tl;e day were regarded as decidedly with our forceo. Uur armv was infirie condition, full of enthu-i asm for the coming battle, and confident of &ue cess. t rtn ?Xciv Vor It. Ntw Vork. June H. The Herald's Harrisburg Hecial says: A column of 25.000 Rebels passed through Bill-burg ye-derday in the direction of Oettys burg. Another account from the front says: Some jicnflctueti connected ith ihe pre arrived last evening from Gettysbcr::, having left before dayTghtin the moniinc- They reprf g it the condition of affair at the close of the figt on Wednesday evening to h ive been htill more favorable and promising of a ucceful issue than previous information received. Thev Ptate that the Rebels had held Gettysburg for some time previous to the approach of our array, and had not only occupied, but had commenced fortifying the hills we?t of town, where liiey proposed to check our advance toward ('li-in.lerfburg and the mouth of the Cumberland Valley. The movement of Gen. Reynolds, and the rapidity with which he advance.! after entering the east end of town, took them somewhat by surprise, and he soon obtained a prominent position which the enemy were fortifying. The fisht through the balance of the day wa? a futile attempt on their part to regain this important position, from which they were frequently repulsed. Karly in the afternoon both Longstreet and Hill concentrated their force for grand effort to turn our right flank, when Gen. Howard's 11th corpa mot nobly repulsed those two veteran corps of the Rebel army. The repulse was so complete that no further attempt was made by the enemy during the balance of the day, and night closed in with our holding the position choen by the enemy on which to gire us battle. The 3! and 10th corps also came on the field after the 1 ist repulse of the enemy, but owinc to the fall of Gen,. Reynolds and the lateness of the hour, as well a the exhaustion of the men and a desire to take care of the wounded, it wa determined r.ot to puh the enemy for a renewal of the cot flict. When our informant left the f eld yesterday (Thursday morning) Gen. Meade had arrived, and the main body of our army was in position and ready to push the enemy a soon as day should daw n. Gettysburg is about 25 miles east of Charn bersburg. over a fine rolling country most of the way, which will doubtless be the aceoe of the great battle of the rebellion. Although personally advised of the fact, we are not permitted to gratify the fiopular curiosity concerning the movements of Generals Beauregard and H. Hill. Thee officer doubtless know their own affairs best, and keep their counsels. It i r-ullicici.t to say that the new levies now in process of collection have come into service in good time. We must urge tho fellow citizens of Tennessee and Alabama to be speedy if they would crush the advance of the enemy.
