Christmas was indeed, the most gloomy day ot that terribL winter, more terrible than Valley Forge, the rormntii camp of Washington. Few volunteers of the .South-Western army will lorget the Christmas of sixty-one. The very name conjured tip a thousand stiring memories of merry scenes, which had long since passed into that "dark iiiiiultablj ocean. " Now the red ilame of war is flashing with a dazzling brll'iancy in the mazy chadows of futurity, and tbe lurid gleam of city, town, aud cottage cast their wicrd-iike rays on the dying monarch, for tliis is Freedom'? funeial pyre. Who will ring her prou 1 reciuiem when she has passed away? Who but the free could awake tbose thrilling strains, and when this glorious fabric of liberty crumbles to thu ground, patriotism and patriots will lie buried beneath the ruins. And it is meet that he should, for he might not live under the frown of anarchy, nor amid the turmoil of confusion. But I am writing a sketch of the war, and must postpone my philosophical observations, for the present, and continue my sketch. Time wears rapidly away, Christmas has flown, and with it the gloom that hung over the spirits of the volunteer. It is New-Years, and the orders of the day are to be happy. Sinie are writing to their friends in oM Indiana; others are discussing the vivifying qualities of the contents of certain black bottles which the Sutlers hand over to the tune of "two and a half. We've marched o'er many a barren plain And rugged mountain side Some left a home and parents dear, fcoine Kit a bonnic Critic. Some lcep beneath the frozen sod, Some mourn their comrades gone But none are hear to drop a tear On the grave of Sixty-One. One year ago to-night, my lads, 1 heard amoundul j-tiiun; 'Twos passing wild, and told cf joys Gone, ne'er to come again The singer was an aged tar Who long had braved the storm, He spoke of strife, and coming war In accents of alarm. Then praqcd the proffered hand of strife Though red with brother's gore. One last, long look, and then "Farewell." Forever, peace to thee. We graced tbe sword, and flung aloft The banner of the lice "Down with the mast, let go the ttays " For hark the tonn has broke It shook each plaak from '-iem to stern," Though matte cf freedom's oak. " And then the clash, and clang of steel, Aai banners waving high; The thundering cannon's deadly peel Wtica shook the very sky And charging squadron's from afar Had heard the signal gun They gaily come, taeir trade is war And they cheer old Sixty-One. The plowman leaves the sod unturned, Tho b.iJegrocm leaves his bri !e. They go again to raise that Flag For which their ircs died; Tho lawyer leaves his mustv brocks Aud bacLlca un his sword, And the merchant closes up bis store, And the rah er leaves his hoard.
