Ldwix M. Sianto. Secretary cf War. i'rim l'ope Department. Headlaktir Aimt or Vikgima, Cedar Mountain, August 13. To M jr General Halleek, Commander in Chief: On Thursday morning the enemy croa-d the lUpnlati at Bamet'a Ford in heavy force and advanced strong on the road to Culpepper and Madisou C. ii. 1 had established my whole force on t!c turnpike between Culpepper and Sperrvvtile re idv to con centrate at either place as soon a the enerav ' ' phns were developed. " j Ltrly on rnd.iT it became apparent that the move on Madison C. II was tneiely m feint to daceie the riny corps of Gen. S'gH at Sperrvville, and that tlie mihi attack of the enemy would be at Culjepper. to which rUce I Ivid thrown for-w-.mi a put of Generals Dauka's and McDowel.'i corps. Brigadier General Biyard, with part of the rear of McDowell's cotjis, who was in the advance bear th Kapidan. fell slowly back, delaying and embarrassing the enemy's advmce as lar as rx'sälble, and captuiing stme of his m?n. The forces of Bmks and Sel. ant one of the division ot M-DoweTs corps w ete rapidly concenti iiing at Culpepper during Fiiday ut.d Saturday niht, Banks's corps lieing p.islie.1 forward five miles south of Culpeper, with Kicketts s division of McDowell s corps tliree miles in his rear. The corps of Gen. Siel, whi h had marclied all night, wa.s halte! in Culpepper to rest a lew hour-. OnSiturday the enemy advanced r.ipidly to Cedar Mountain, the sides of which they occupied in heavy force. Gen. Bmks was hstruxted to tike up hij posU tioli on the ground occupied by Cnwlor!' brigade of his command, w hich had been thro n out the day previous to observe the enemy's movements. He was instructed not to advance beyond that point, and il attacked by the enemy, to de 'end his position, and send back timely notice. It was my desire to have time to give the coip ot Gen. Sigel nil the rest possible, alter their force. i marcn, nn.l to bring forward all the fori t s at my disjjsal. The artillery of the enemy oned e irlr in the afternoon, but he made no advance until nearly 5 o'clock, at which time a lew skirmishers we.e thrown forward on each side under cover of the heavy wood in which his force was concealed. The enemy pushed forward a strong fotce in the rear of his skirmishers, and General Banks advanced to the attack. The engagement did not fa'uly open until after G o'clock, but for au hour and a half was fuiious and unceasing throughout. Cannonading, wh:ch was at first desultory, wasdirccted mainly against J tlie cavalry. I had continued to receive reports from Gen. Banks that no attack was ap;iehn ed. and that no considerable in! antiy foue of the enemy had come forwatd, yet toward evening the increase in the artillery tiring having satisfied me an engagement might beat hand, though tlie lateness of the hour rendered it unlikely. I ordered General Mc Dow eil to advance lticketts'a division to support Gen. Banks and directed General Sigel to bring his men on the ground as soon as possible. I arrived personally on the field at 7 1. M , and found the action raging furiously. The infantry fire was incessant and severe. I found General Banks holding the position he took up early in the morning. His losses were heavy. Kicketu's division was immediatelypushed forward and occupied the advance of Gen. Banks. The brigade of Gens. and Gorman being directed to change their position from the right and mass themselves in the center. Before this change could be effected it was quite dark. though the artillerv continued at short without irtermission. range The artillery fire at night by the21and5ih Maine battery in Kicketts's division of Gen McDowell's corps, was most destructive as was readily observable the next morning in the dead men and horses and broken gun carri iges of the enemy's batteries which hol !en advanced ag liust it. Our troops rested on their arms during the night in line of battle. A heavy shelling being kept up ou both sides until midnight. At daylight the next morning the enemy fell back two miles from our front and still higher up the mountain. Our pickets at once advanced and occupied the ground. The fatigue of the troopä from long marches and excessive heat, made it impossible for either to resume the action on Sunday. The men were theiefore allowed to rest and recruit the whole day. Our only active operation being that of cavalry on the enemy's flank and rear. Monday was sicnt in burying the dead and in pelting off the wounded. The slaughter was severe on both sides, most of the fighting being hand to hand. The dead bodies of IkiIi armies were found nvngled together in masses over the whole gioui.d cfcoiitikt. Thebuning ot the deid was not completed until dark on Monday, the heat being no terrible that seveie work was not pos-ible. On Monday night the enem? fled from the field leaving many of his de id unburied and his wounded on the ground and along the road to Orange C. II , as will be seen from Gen. Buford's dispatch. A cavalry and artillery force under Gen. Bufor l was immediately thrown furward in pursuit and followed the en imy to the Rapid in. over which he pissed with his tear guard by 10 in the morning. The behaviour of Geir B inks' corps during the action w as very fine. No greater gallantry and daring could be exhibited by any troops. I cannot speak too highly of the coolness and intrepidity of (Jen. Banks himself during the wh.de of the engagement. He was in the front, and exposed as much as any man in his com mand. His example was of th reitest benefit, and he metitsand should leceive the commenda tiin of his Government. Generals Williams, Augur, Gorman, Crawford, Piince Green and Geary behaved with conspicuous gallantry. Augur and Geary were seve;ely wounded, and Prince, by losing his way in the dtik while passing from one flink to the other, fell into the tnt'id. of the enemy. I desire publicly to express my appreciation of the prompt and skillful m inner in which Genera's McD well and Sigel brought forward tier respective commands ami established theui in the field, and of their cheerful and hearty co operation with me fiom beginning to end. Brig Gen. Roberts, Ctiief ot Cavalry of this nrtnv, was with the advance of our forces on j FiiUay and Stturday, and was oiipicuous for j gallantry and for the valuable aid he tendeied Gens. Hink ami Crawlonl. Our loss was about 1 .Ä00 killed wounded and m'ssnz, of whom tweuly-nite were ukeu prisoners. As might be expected from the character of tlie engagement a very large proportion of these were killed. The enemy's loss in killed wounded and pril oners, w e ate now satisfied, is much in excess of our own. A full list of casualties will be transmitted as soon as possible together with a detailed report, in which I shall endeavor to do jastice to alt. Jons PorE, Major General Commanding. Froin Mlatonrl HaxxrBAL. August 13. A dispatch from Haaceywell savs: A Federal officer jut returned from Newmarket reports the rebel Porter bus disbanded hit forces and is now among the kill on vbir.es river with about twenty men. About 300 retreated into Monroe county. Proper Step have been taken to capture both gangs. LacLIHE, Mo. Aug. 14 Col. Guitar overtook Poindexter's guerrillas again yesterday at Yellow Creek.
