The first fcenten:e ot our report reads thus: It In compliance with the invitation of a number t.f citizen of different political pirties. lor whom he entertained a hig! repct, that he appeared with becoming diffidence. Judge Hugh is's owu report read: It is in compliance with the inriution of n number of eitixtus of different political parties, for whom I entert-vin a high repect, th it I appeir iu ihl place to espre some opinions, and, (I t4Uft with becoming dfLdet.ce,) tofTcrBome counel on public arfurs. Here is the evidence that the JuJge prccnttint we hive imlteiouslr niisrereentel him. What a rni.-eTab!e q i'.hbie. We ch illcnge the caviller to show any misrcjuesentatiou. A the Judeh.is refened to a private conversation, we will state what did occur at the interview. We cai'ed upon him profeiomllr on Wednesday afternoon to ascertain h ether his apeech was written ojt, to avoid Ihe labor of rersirting it if it was. When informed it was not, we told him we could not make a verbntim report, and wouid only attempt to give the ubUnce of hi remarks. To this he did not ob ject. We nt-iJe no promise to give bim the notes to revise, but we would have done so if time had permitted. We have found from experience the inconvenience of so doin, from the fact thtt speakers are very apt to modify and change their rem irks. Our intruetton to Mr. Datmiller, the "capacity and cmdjr" of whom Judge HicuES concede, was to make as full and accurate a report of his peech as he could, o ns to li-ive it nppc.tr in the morning iaue. The report, a published in the Smtintl, was a "faithful and fu!l transcript of hi note," just ns he took then from the speaker' mouth. We made no chsnge in them whatever, nor did e nue.t any. Ia fact we did not read the report until we siw it in the ptper on the morning It appeared. Those who heard Judge lit. cms, or who have read both reporU. cannot but admit that our sy nopsis fairly and futhfally reported the sentiments he uttered. If he will point out any inaccuracies where injustice h is been done him, so far as his spoken speech is concerned, we will cheerfully correct them. So much for a very t nall matter. The fact is if the caption and introduction to the speech had been lettout.not a word of complaint would have been heard from the Judge. That's what hurt That's what makes him wince. In regard to the l?öd peech. We reproduced ll at the request of the Judge himself. At our interview e asked him if he recollected it sentiments. He stid he did, und that he jet tod by tliem. lie then aked us to j-eprint it in the Stntintl, as he wanted few extra copies for circulation. We thought we were doiut the Judge a j;reit kindness, but he has not yet sent for the extra copies. The ipeech ol Judge Highu is specious, mil'gnu.t, and we honestly be'ieve was made to uo-erve hi own interests. What sympathy, un le ;t be a community of interest, can he have With JCUAM, LOTEJOY, SCMXXB. GiODINUS. For the lr.Uian State SentiicL Letter from nn Aimr sifficer lrrrl biii? V hul he Na' In WuRhingmrt W.hi.otom, D. C, June 11, 1G"2. Dear J e: I left your gocwlly city at y l M. on Fiiday la.-t, aiid by the aid ot a slip of paper, which I paid $1? A) lor, I lound myself at this place on Sunday morning. You, of coure, know that I am an ullicer ol the grand Uni n army, aud wear choulder straps, and as such should have had due re.-pect bhown me; nor can I complain, for when I left the cars, at the Washington De pot, I met a gie it string of the litest gentlemen of the citv, eich anxious that I should take ii seat in his carriage and ride down to my hotel. This was m distinction that I did not look for, but I ntti ib.ited it II to the shoulder traps and my good looks. I finally seiicted one of the finest cirrhige. and the gen t'eui n who drove asked me what hotel I desired to j.o to. This was a stumper, for I did not know ni)elf. Indeed, alter re-eiving so mui h Mttention at the depot, I thought it posib!e that I was to be made the guct of the city, and ;i hotel already in waiting to receive rue. The uentlem in, however, not understanding the m titer in th t liht, repeatci the names of a lare number of hotels. mikI among the number was the "Ave nue Houc," to which place he soon drove me. dismounted, and veiy politely ojeiied the door of the caniitge, and assisted tue in getting out. and just as I was going to thank him for his kindne-s, he fays A dollar, sir, peise." "Whit?' says 1. "A dolUr. sir." S I ju.-t pulled out very nearly the la.st "unicorn" that 1 had aoout mc und t;ae it to him. He thanked ue with a gracious smile, which rather pleased me. Mr,d away ho went. I then went up into the loft of the A vein. e Hou.-e. where I found :t verv dirtv little office, with a nice young mm behind the counter, and nigger sitting by. 1 registered my name, ami inquned ol the nigger where 1 could get a drink. The nig'jtr said that it wim Sunday, and none could be h id neuer than Wilhud'a Hotel, to which place he directed me, and away I wnt. The streets were crowded with soldiers and niggers. M my of ti.e soldiers were very polite, saluting me in true military style, all on account of my straps. I soon found Willard's, got my drink, and started back I hid not got far, betöre I met a squad of the nicest looking soldiers I eer suv, under the command ol an equally nice looking Screant, who, upon approach. ng, halted his men, gave me the military salute, and I thought be was going to have his nun present aims while I pased. The streets were full, and I felt proud of the distinction about to be couiert ed. So just as I was going to make my most polite salute to the men, the nice little Serge mt sajs, "A pass, sir; apa-s, sn!" "The devil!" says I, "I h ive no p-is; lam o.'licer of the army don't you see my shoulder straps'?" The nice littl oilicer informell nie that he was oilicer of the 1'rovost Guard, and charged with the duty of arresting all oilieers and soldiers found in tli3 city without a pass. 15 v this time quite a ciowd of niggers and white men had come up, muiy of whm 1 noticed were very much amused. md 1 suspected h it it might be at my expense. So you ee that I did not lee.l quite so comloi t tbJe as I ft id a lew moments bclore. However, by dint of h ird persuasion, I got the othcer lo let me off. under the promise that I would join my regiment lot th w ith. This, however, 1 did not intend to do, for my Ictve of ab sence had three d ys to run, and I inten. le 1 to in ke the most of it. I it'turned to .he totel rather crest fallen, and fully ot the opinion th it I w is not near to gie it

posure of our Plans and Strength to the Uttels Plots aj'iinst McCUilan. Washington, June 8. How the rebel troops will fight in the next and probably last great battle befoie Richmond, m iv be judged from the manner in which they cou ducted themselves on lal Sitiudty and Sunday. I h iveseen m my of the officers and soldiers who were engaged in different puts of the field, and their universal tP-tiuionv is, that the lebel troops fought with detei ni ncl courage, and held their ground seidilv. The accuracy of their aim is sufficiently attested by the long list of our killed and wounded, which amounts to fully 7,000, instenl of 3,000. There is no u-e in concealing the tiuth, and I know it to be so. The only wonder is that not more of our oflicers weie killed. Captains, Colone!, Brigadier Generals, and even Generals of divisions, expo.-ed themselves with bravery bordering on recklessness. The vete ran, Generals Heintzelmati and Sumner, were both under fire, and as cool as if on parade. Gen. Philip Kearney, followed by his st iff, rode no and down the line of battle amid the lenlen htil, cheering aid animating his men. Gen. Jamison's hor-e was shot under him an animil that I have often admired, and which the General will find diflicu't to reolace. Central Berry, another of Geo. Keirney's Hrigadiers, was untiring in his efforts to m ike the tiie of his brigade effectual . an l it did leirlul execution. Gen Uirney alone, Gen. Kearney's third Brigadier, failed to emulate ihe ex.impie ol his ch.ei, anu bis brigade, in con sequence, was useless, lie h is been relieved of his comm md. He is a son of the celebrated .las. G. A roliiicul iVIoreiiient In exv York We utjderstaud that the programme for the organization of a great conservative prty has been prepared and agreed upon by the con-emtive leaders, and is ready to be submitted to Mr. Weed, and w ill no doubt meet with bis and Secretary Seward i approval. It is contemplated under this arrangement to nominate. by one or mre conventions, Horatio Sevmour for Governor and William M. Evarts for Lientcnent Oovemor.no doubt with the intention of obtaining the endorsement of the people of the latter, and thin sending him to the United Stvtes Senate. Should this ceneral conservative organization be fixed upon, the local organization will be adjusted to it, and none but high minded conservative and tiue Union men be nominate Jor Congress. And, thus fortified, no person can JaV t momeut doubt but that the Empire State, waj its great cumiuercial interests, its future prosperity, power and influence at stake, will give the ticket an overwhelming indorsement, and roll up a m ijority that will effectuilly end in this quarter all future efforts of the Abolition conspirators, a? well as Secretary Chase's and Collector Harney's black arty, which now seek the total destruction of the Union and Constitution. Y. Y. Herald The Hebet Plan. Should Johnston be driven from Richmond, it is exi ected th at the rebels will concentrate all thtir armies in the mountain regions of Southwestern Virginia, Southeastern Tennessee, Northeastern Alabama, Northwestern Georgia and Western South and North Carolina, and theie make a last stand. It is reliably ascertained they are alieady getting ready for this by shipping s-foies, supplies and munitions to these quarters. They hoje to stand some chance of final success by drawing the Union armies far from their bases of operation, and forcing upon them the necessity of long lines of communication and tr:tnpor tation through hostile sections, thereby giving them a chance to w orst them by tlink movements in detail.
