RKV15E1 TATUTES OF 152 with the amendment tberet. .nd the subequen legiolation, with notes atid reference . Judicial decius. EDITED BT JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR OKD. Volume l.Tublir-hed by lll(;il.71 A: DOn.lITY, MLIIJAUS. Judge David ?IcIontildt one of the moot eraiuent lawyers of the Sute, volunteered the following ecommendation of tbe work: Stattte or iüi'U.u, it Gatim A Hord. Some month azo, the a'ove named gentlemen lued proposal for publihin, in two velumes octavo of oine MOO jiajje each, al the statute of the State patted since 1S.11, with anndation. The tirt volume of the work i now published ; and the manner of it execution, both mechanically and editorially, d:tTves the thank of the profevsjoii. TLe ini-rftct manner of publishing our statute undtt State authority, ha always been a eourre of great inconvenience to tLe Indiana Lawyer. The revision of 152, a well a the htatute paed since that year, niinht almost asw!Ih;ve been published without any index. Lp tc tbistime the lawyer ha constantly been under the necessity of tun.ii g over, leaf by leaf, the volumes u nr statute to Lnd atiy particular enactment. And every one know a how annoy ing and provoking this is, especially in the hurry of business a in our Court. Happily for the t rofevion.the publication under consideration promises a better state of thinirs In tbe future. The first volume o ilrssrs. (iavin A lord's work contain an excellent and copious itnle, which to every practicing lawyer in the täte is itself worth the money which the volume costs. The volume under review contain Another excellence llits pages are supplied with valuable marginal indices, o that a glance at the margin i autlicictit to apprise the eaderof tbe contents of tbe page. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in this volume is a good collection of the subject of all legislation rince 151. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any given subject had first to find whit was relevant to it in tbe lievUion of K2, and then to turn over the psgc of the volume of subsequent Statutes, to see bow far recent legislation may have repealed or mol tied the provi-ioii ci. tamed in that KeviMon. and even then be would often fei I doubt whether he had f.iund alt the le-gM.it ion on the subject of his inquiry. Mesr. Gavin ami Hortl have relieved us of all thi trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pages a'.l the statute mmle since ls.11. n the same subject. Thu, on page 373 to. 177 of their rlrt volume they have collected all our legislation, now, in force, on the subject ol husband and wile, including the act of 1H52 and three nets of 1V.7. And they have followed t lie same niodeoico. ovation, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to all other topics of legislation. A still more valuatde feature are tbe copious and accurate notes contained in the volume in question. Thi volume Include the Constitution of the United State, th, Constitution of Indiana, and several important acts ot Virginia ami statutes of Congress, and a large portion o our own statute now in force. The numerous decision o the Courts on the various provision contained In these Constls tution and statutes are found at tbe bottom of tbe appropriate pages, in the form of neat, brief ami accurate noteand references. Messrs. (Savin & Hord seem to Lave performed this part of their work exceedingly well. It must have cost them much care and labor. Ity It they have greatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and have well merited hi grateful approval. In every respect tbe volume under review 1 highly 'editable to the dilligetice, accuracy, talent and the taste o it editors, as well as to the mechanical skill and neatness of its publishers, and it mut raise the Just expectaMoti ol the profession, a to tho value of the second volume, w bleb we understand will le forthcoming in a few months, and which will contain the code of pleading ajid practice o lH.VJ.wilh stscUciit amendment and other stxlutes. W ithout any concert with the editor or publishers ol the volume in question, the writer of thi article ha been in. duced tocompose and publish thinlittle review of I be book, aob ly because, he believe the editor atid publisher deserve hl?h commendation for their performance, lie, therefore, deems It but Just to them, without being solicited to It by any one, to publish this notice of the book, over hi. own proper name.
