Lydia Maria Childs article on "Spirit?, in tlic Iay numlnrof Atlantic Monthly, contains the following interesting passage: When Harriet Hosnier.the 5Culptor,vi5itetl her native country, a few years ago, I had an interview with her, during which our conversation happened to turn upon dreams and visions. 'I have some cxpcriaencc in that way," said fhe. "Let mc tell you a singular circumstance that happened to me in Home. An Italian girl named Itosa was in my employ for a long time, but was finally obliged to return to her mother, on account of confirmed ill-health. AVe were mutually sxrry to part, for we liked each other. When I took my customary exercise on horseback I frequently called to see her. On one of these occasions I found her bright-r than I had seen her for some time past. I had long relinquished hopes of her recovery-, but there wa nothing in her appearance that gave me the impression of immediate danger. I
! left her with the expectation of calling to see
her agam manv times. Lmnng the remainder
of the day I was busy in nty studio, anil I dp not rvccoilect that Hoa was in my thoughts after I parted from her. I retired to rest in good health and in a quiet frame of mind. But I woke from a sound sleep with an oppressive iceling that some one was in the room. I wondered at the ?nsation, for it was entirley new to me; but in vain I tried to dispel it. I
peered bevond the curtain of my bed, but
could distinguish no object in the darkness.
Irving to gather upmv thoughts, I soon relloct
cd that the door was locked, and then I put the key under my bolster. I felt for it, and found it where I had placed it. I said to mvself that
I hail probably had some ugly dream, and had waked with a vague impression of it still on my mind. Reasoning thus, I arranged mv.-elf
comfortably for another nap.
I am habitually a good leepcr, and a stranger to fear; but.tlo what I would, the idea still haunted me that some one was in the room. Finding it impossible to sleep, I longed for daylight to dawn that I might rise and pursue my customary avocations. It was long before I was able dimly to distinguish the furniture in my room, and soon after I heard, in the apartments below, familiar noises of servants opening window and doors. An old clock, with ringing vibrations, proclaimed the hour. I counted one, two, three, four, five, and resolved
I to rise immediately. Mv bed wa- partially

replied, "You have reported the tory of Rosa corTcctJy. 3Iake what use you plea of it. You cacnot think it more interesting, or unaccountable, than I do myself. lioinnntic Incident A corn?sionlent of the Ilanlin Countv Ilepuhlicnn gives the following interesting incident which occurred during the transit of
the 82d regiment to the "seat of war." At ' me nliec alon the roal where we stoppe 1 to take on coal and water, an incident occured which impressed me. as worthy of notice. From a desolate looking hovel stowed away among the rock5 a quarter of a mile p the hillside came running down to the train like a gazell, the most perfect specimen of mountain maiden innocence and beautv ithai ever fallen to the lot of the understanding to to look upon. ' This specimen was a young pirl of about fifteen unsophisticated years. .She came dancing up to the train, out of breath, with her hair all adrift and exclaiming; "hurrah for the soldiers, hurrah for the soldiers. Our friend who was setting near me humming 'the girl I left behind me, observing her animated and patriotic style, protnded his head from the car window and responded, in his usual poetical way, 'bully forou, my pal, vou must like the soldiers.' lou may b.t . your life on that said phe, aud,Fshe continued, I only wish I was a man or a boy, I'll bet I'd go to war. 'Well,' said Goitbute, 'why don't your daddy and brothers go?' 'They are all pone she, replied, 'anil I've a notion to pet on the cars and ro part of the way anyhow.' 'Come along, then my mountain beauty, said our friend, I've a place in mv buzzum left vacant, and you can just drop in, take possession and begin darnin' my socks. She started for the car., but just as she got over shoe-top in trying to cros the gutter, the bell rang, away went the train with our disconsolate friend, and the sweet bundle of woodland patriotism and purity commenced retracing her steps along the rocky path oil the hillside. Our friend Goitbutes, has not been fit for duty since, and keeps his mess awake half the night talking in his sleep about the girl he saw at the waterstation.' The Great West. Not a heart in New England but hails the Great West with pride. Her character is developing; its heroism, courage, magnanimity, prow upon the world every day. hka warned the South that she was not to be trilled with; that she had an inheritance in the Mississippi; and that she could mantain it. She is mantaining it, and the memorv of her labor to maintain it will linger forever in the ears of the. South. When tins labor is over, when the Mississippi is subjected to its just and natural masters it will be many years before any other disloyal band willattempt to wrest it from them. The West is making a splendid history for herself she is growing like a great nationality upon the world, and the future owers of the earth will respect her character and her demands. As is suggested, she will stand, more and more, as she grows in political importance, between the fanaticism of the Ea;t and the feudalism of the South. It will be her great duty to silence sectionalism everywhere, to reconcile sections to the sovereignty of the central power. No man can doubt but that she will use her power honorably, justly. She is the life blood of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore; these cities arc Jier brokers between her and the eastern world; their wealth must be acquired in bringing Europe and the We.-t togethtr. New Orleans stands in the same relation to her. Her necessities require that she should have these two avenues to the fcas, and she will have them. She never can be divorced from the East, never can be divorced from the South, and, to-day, she shows that sho has the power to maintain this dual Union against all opposition. Boston Post.
