At this eason, except that fashion is slightly less bustling in Lent, London is generally very much live taking its tone fiom the Court. At these sudlv solemn reunions, dull silence grimly reigns. There is not even a whiser to your neighbor if you knew him. The etiquette is, tlo not open your mouth unless royalty expressly condescends to speak to you. Do not expect such a compliment. That is reserved for a few favored guests in the immediate vicinity of the regal hostess. The linner occupies from rixtv to ninety minutes, and when ended,, the iueen rises, all other Ivlies rising and retiring with her. The male guests remain some ten minutes longer, silently sipping their wine, or whisp ring in mall knots, with bated breath.

If any male member of the Iloyal family is preyent, he tows an acknowledgment. Coffee follows, and theu the gue.-t. departa few to the drawing room, whtre the maids of honor are yawning, the rest going home, where it is supjo.n'd each man gets out of his livery at once, and gets rid of his gnawing hunger by means of oysters aud stout. Such, I am informed by one who i x1'rienced it, is the routine of a royal dinner. Ie was an East Indian, and suffered much.

There U a popular superstition, that a cat, if allowed the pjortunity, will "suck the breath of a child," though how this is accomplished is not apparent. Cats are subject to much suspicion, nnd, indeed, no animal jvetted by man is at once so much admiretl and detested. A circumstance tarn: to our knowledge iec ntly which seems to indicate that the numerous charges made against the feline race are. not altogether unfounded. The other evening, at a residence only a few miles from this citv. a cat was discovered sitting upon the chest of a little boy four years old, her mouth pressed close to the elild's lips, and the cat evidently much absorbed in the operation. An effort was made to Iii ve the cat off by speaking sharply'to her. She paid no attention to this, ami was cquallv unmindful of a scries of blows with a stiele. The cat was finally fairly pushed off the Ixxly of the child, and off the bed. She was then pushed out of the room and down the stairs. She could not 1k driven in the usual wav. She had a bewildered and wild look all the time, and exhibited a sign of ferocity by springing on tho servant, who was forcing her down stairs. The cat was instantly killed, as a warning to all cats not to be too intimate with sleeping children. The little bov woke up during tho noiso which was maJe, and was naturally somewhat frightened. He lid not seem to be injured. Though no harm was lonc, evil might have ensued had not the cat been discovered and removed. Her weight on thj child's chest would necessarily reduce the quantity of air inspired, and tend to cause suffocation, while the child would inspire only carbonic acid gas as taken from the mouth of the cat. These two caues might produce death even. They may have originated the superstition that a cat "sucks the breath of a child." The case is interesting and novel, and may serve the purjiose of eliciting inquiry and putting some parents on their guard against tho treacherous and stealthy pets with which their children play. Spirit of the Ilclitrirtii I'refta, A writer in the New York Kvanrjdist, (a clergyman,) is at some pains to demonstrate a truth that will probibly makt some of the Alolition brethren r)ll up their eyes, that "the great sin of our land is not slavery." "Sabbath-breaking," "profanity," "Intemperance," "licentiousness," "infidelity," etc., the writer has the boldness to suggest,"are the great sins of tho North as well as the South; and though he does not say so right out, he leaves it to be inferred, that if our moral re

formers, humanitarians, etc., would spend half

as much energy in combatting these, as is spent on slavery, (which don't exist in the North at all,) our unhappy country would not be in so bad a plight as it is to-lav. The TaUet (R. C.) is pitching into modern philanthophy, as the sum of "human villainy," producing Almlitionists, Woman's Bights, Spiritualists, Free Lovers, and other moral and political excrescences. The Church JourmiU in an obituary notice of the late Bishop Meade, of Virginia, says: "Connected with the best families in the State, and possessed of an ample patrimony, he became early enlisted with his whole heart in the work of emancipating and colonizing the slaves; and to give liberty to those who Indonged to him, he unhesitatingly made himself a poor man for life, his house and all its furniture being thenceforward always of the plainest and simplest description. Later in life he is said to have deeply regretted his feeling toward these slaves, not for an instant be caue of the pecuniary sacrißce to himself but from oliserring the injurious ejfrcts of premature freedom upon those men whom he had libcrated faforc they terre fit for it.
