Wallace, of Illinois, a Lrare and gallant officer, w.u kit!el in that engaeraent on Monday, and the informant of Gov. iluRTOJ has probably confounded hii name with tnatof General Lkw. Wallace. A Terrible Conflict and n Grrnt Victory. If the telegraph report even approximate the troth, on Sand? and Monday list wa fought the reatet battle in the annals of modern warfare. The report- thus far ive but a meager description of the eii igemetit, the numbers ujm either ide.and the rejultj. Kirlvon Sund.iv mornx, the battle; commenceil by an unexpected assault from the rel.eU ujn our advanced force beyond I'itt-barg, led, it U .iid, by Heaieeabi. The conflict raged furiously all day, niidboth Northern and Southern account a:ree fiat it wns to the advantage of the rebel. Our forces weie ilrien back to the Tenncs.-ec rirer, with the Ios of camp euijmtre, a lare number of armwi and prisoners. There, with the a.jitarice of pinboat, our army wa.s enabled to maintain im position. On Mondiy the jttt!e whm renewed. On Sunday Gen. Guant wm largely reinfurrvd. Tbi increase of his force with freh troops finally gare him the advantage. The battle of Monday was no I ess fierce and determined than that of the previous day. Late in the afternoon the tide of battle turned in our favor. The enemy was repul.-ed and driven back. The camp and cannon lost the previous day were recovered and the routed rebel army retreated to their retrenchments, uetrodfully pursued by Gen. Hi rLL's division. We presume ouly an estimate & given of the lofs on either fide, for a sufficient time had not el a paed after uch an engagement to state it with any degree of accuracy. The first reports give eighteen to twenty thousand killed, wounded and mining on our side, and the loss of the enemy is supposed to le nearly double, but the numbers are doubtless exaggerated. The heart ticken at the contemplation of such a terrible human slaughter. The loss of Federal officers was tery great and this is the best evidence of the desperate energy with which the battle was fought. The trout. from Indiana and Illinois must hare suffered immensely, and the interest in those States to know who have fallen will be inteu.xe. The battle waa contested brarely, determinedly and desperately by the rebels, buc in . vain. The defeat, if it is only a repulse, will be a terrible blow to the rebel army. It km undoubtedly the intention of Heai kloako to fall upon Gram's division with a superior force and cut "it to pieces before reinforcements could reach them. He did all that skilful I generalship could accomplish, but he faded in the anticipated victory. The result must be disastrous to the rebel cause. It cannot fail to dispirit and demoralize all their forces. If the anticipated engagement at Yorktown and Newborn nhould have a similar termination, the hopeic."M)cs of the rebel cause must become apparent to even the Confederates themselves. This week will probably be the most memorable

ttr. Washington, April 1. There Urei.'on to believe tint the anthoritie at H'u ftuiorid, iirofileited Oy tlie continued reVerges that are h inpeninn to their armies, con vimcd that their c.ie is hopeless, nnd fh it. unless they rn ke some despernte etrrt to retrieve their fortunes, th.ey mut abandon their wicked enterprie in de-piir, hive revolt oil ujm)h hii tt tek on Wahintfn as a kitnf of forlorn hope. The very fact tint they are find omni uh to en tertain urh nil idea for a moment, shows that thev hive been deceived as to the me ins of lefeiiehere The Norfolk and Uiehinond papers of April i!d, contain account- of the arrival at Fortress Monne, within the last ten days, of more than a hundred large ve.-sels filled with Union troops, amounting, they say, to .r0.1Mi; i;i number, and swelling the aggregate of Cnion troops there to bO.fMK). The-e tioops thev think, have come direct from Washington, and t on-iituted, until a few days ago, a part of the Union army of the Potomic. And their idci is tint General McClelhin contemplates an attack on Richmond by way of Yorktown and the Peninsula, with these troop; but in order to do this, has left Wahingtoii undefended. Here is another instance of the ill cUeehs (f suppressing the ruth in regnrd t certain military movements. Had the real truth been published in regard to whatever troops may be at Fortress Monroe, the Con fedntes would hive been wonderfully chagrined at learning where thev did come from; and thev would be convinced also that any attempt on Wa.-hington now will be more hopeless that it has been at any previous time. Perhaps, how ever, this move on Washington will be the la-t expiring struggle of the monster of secession; and this made, or attempted, the said monster will probably give up the cho-t. It is said that the Confederates are prepai ing"a combined land and naval force, coii.iriii of 75,XM troops cf the late army of the Potomac, five or fix large iron plated steamers, a fleet of transHrts, and an innumeraMc number of tl itbo its. The five or six iron vessels ate the Merrimae, the Jamestown, tlie Yorktown, and two or three that have recently been built at Kich mond. When all things are in reai'mess, the steamers, and the transport vessels w ith roops on loard, are to sail down the James river, out into Chesapeake liy, and up the Potomac. They expect to encounter the Monitor, but it is said that the Merrim ic will engag- her, and that she has been supplied with an armament and projectiles which will enable her to disable if not to -ink the former. They expect to elude all the other vessels in the roads, and proceed up the Potomac without further detention. At the same time the 75,00!) troops are to be assembled at Frederics burg, march thence to the nearest point on the Potomac, cross that ft ream in the lht boats under oovea of the guns of the steamers, land at Maryland Point, und m irch up the eastern side of the Potomac to Washington, whiie the lleet mov es up the stream. '1 hey a: e fully acquainted with the p)sitiii and strength of every foit around tlie capital, accurate drawings of the same have been furnished to them by the r friends. It w ill he their first care to hurry their troops across the Long Ilridge, and endeivor to seize fhe-e

It throws a solid shot weighing 00') jounds. The shot is of wrought iron, long, and has a steel point. This point is not conical, as in the common title c union ball, but shaped like that of the ordinary instrument for punching iron. Recent experiments show this to be an uglv weapon, even against thick iron plates. The gun for this projectile, with the two Armstrong gun, put altoard the Virginia since she returnad from Newport News, gives her one of the mo-t formidable batteries in the world, in addition to her beinir jei fectly shot and shell proof. rnrmn Ilrownloxt- on tlie TrullorM. Our readers will remember how often we have expressed a tle-'re to have the leading secession i.-ts of the South und the leading Abolitionists of
1 tiie North hung iu pairs from the same tree or
gallows. Wc have believed, and still earnestly believe, there would h; eminent justice in such a di-po-ition of them, and that the country would then have peace. Our Abolition cotemporarie have, of course, denounced u lor expressing su- h a sentiment. The following extract from the speech of Parson Rrownlovv to the Pioneer Association of Cincinnati shows tint he entertains the same view. The reporter of the Cleveland I'lain Dialer says: "Colonel GeofFroy introduced Parson Rrownlow to the Association, who was warmly received and greeted in a speech bv Benjamin Kgg!eton. Mr. P.rownlow, in reply, said, among other things, that he knew not what might be the sentiments of the au licnce he was addressing; he did not desire to wheedle the North because he was in the North, nor did he favor the South when he was 1:1 the South, but he would say that if one hundred of the rank, talented, notorious and corrupt Abolitionists of tlie North, and one hundred of the mean, thieving, dirty and corrupt secessionists, who hive been leaders in the South, had been taken to Washington months ago and strung up in the public square, and their souls sent to h 11, we would never have been saddened with our present troubles." The reporter hays that the sentiment was roundly cheered by the entire audience. The Parson thus puts abolition and secession leaders on a par so far as treasonable intent is encerned, and so must every calm, fair minded man in the country. It will also be observed that he puts them on a par in causing our present troubles, for he s ivs h id a hundred of the leaders of secession and abolition been hung, "we would never have been saddened with our present troubles." The low prices and the probability that the rebellion is rapidly approaching its termination, which we understand is the prevailing opinion among the Liverpool merchants, keep up the
speculative demand in England; and then the j
quality of our bacon this season is so far superior to that cured iu any previous season, is probably .mother encouraging feature. The: are not only taking sides but also shoulders, in l if bams had been cut to suit the ideas of English consumers, an immense quantity of them would also be taken. There has been an improved demand for mess

DtMOcRATiC Gains So far as he.lrd from, there is a complete revolution iu tbe Republican strongholds. In the Republican cities of .Janesville, Racine, Kenosha und La Crosse the Democrats have elected their entire tickets. Tbeg.iins over la.styear are immense. "Theie h is u change taken place in the public mind." The people ate getting sick of Republicanism as professed and rattked by the so-called Republican party. Who savs now that there is no Democratic party? Who will prove it? Democrats, stand firm. "There is a better day coming." Circulate Democratic newspapers. Milwaukee Atir.
The Electiun. The lull returns received ye-tertlay weie quite nn improvement upon the aspect of affairs Monthly night. Tlie Democrats elect precisely half the ticket, viz: The Tiustees of the Water-works. Mr. Torrence; the City Commissioner, Mr. Uoefer; and the Clerk of the Po lice Court, Mr. Me-Liry. These gentlemen are all chosen for three years to the urst. important positions on the ticket, so far as favor and pat ronige are concerned. .The Democrats will continue to retain the Waterworks for two years, the Roard of City Improvements for two years, and the City Council probably fjr one year. Cin. 11 nq. DeMOCKATIC VlCTOttV AT SpitlNOFlFLD, OlIIO. Win D. Hall, u staunch and unflinching Democrat, has been elected Mayor of Spi ingfield, Ohio, by tour majority. This is a large gain, as Springfield has been one of the strongest Republican cioes in the Slate.
