Only yesterday we C'ifiratnlate I it tint it hal made an exception lo it erieral advcacy of error, not more to our iirprie than in own ptrtj uMoci-ate-i. by occupv in a eon-ervatire fi-iit:jii upon the policy to le purutHl toward the rebel Sttc which may by the fortune 4 of war be throw r upon our h u.d; but even for the-e kind wonls we expct to receive abu?e. wit'i all the vior of ila iuuIL-h nature. But to the i- ue of the Journal that we have been fierce and fiNe" in our notice of (lovernor Wkimit's appointiu t aud rpeech. Let u briefly review wh-vt we did y, and see what U.t caused our amab! cotcm;"rary to boil over with ii'di nation. We orAe from our article which the Journal ic,nluc cs in part; The Journal can not understand why we do not devote our coiuiiiiM to tlie alu-e of tiovernor Wright tor alliliutin with the mot bi.ter and unrelenting partisan tit Indiana, tlie men who have ever regarded ainl denounce! him ha a deruafcopie. If he deirfi to make hin bei with auch asaociation it ii lii bu-iiie- and not our:. I not' that true every word of it? We presume the Journal will not thank ui to reproduce in thousand and one chirget of deraaogui.-in upon Governor Wright. And the latter must
exceedingly enjoy the organ's forced eating of j
iu own words which it pecm to do with the game facility an 1 zet that a dog return to it own Tomit. Governor Wrioiit has not changed, lie U the same "demagogue" he was in days of yore. Thechiuge mul be with hi- former "bitter and unrelenting prtWan" opponent. But what most excites the ire of the orgun is the following charge in reference to the condition: of Governor Waiuiir'a appointment: The price of his present position the condition upon which it was tendered him was n repudiation of the January platform and the action of the Democratic Convention. He accepted the degmdinj terms and delivered a virulent speech in opposition to the principle he ha ever profenced to regard as neceary for the preservation of the Union under the Constitution, and in denunciation of hia life long friends. We nude a similar charge on the morning of the day that the new Senator made hi epeech, but he failed to notice it, although he did refer to what we said eomplimentarv of him in the same article. That, however, must be excused, fur it U one of the Governor weaknc.-es. Why this silence? Our information a to the conditions of the appointment came from a prominent Republi. can in this city. Governor Moaro.N did not co'tfer the appointment upon general confidence in
Governor Wright's lofty and elf sacrificing pa- j trioti.m. If so, why the delay? Why did he ! not promptly act upon the expulsion of Mr. Deioht? The whole matter was thoroughly 1 canva.d by the Republican leaders both here 1 and in Wellington. There is no .eciet us to j this. The lir.-t consideration with them was tc i make au appointment which would, in their view, be most damaging to the Democratic party. 1 That determined, the next thing was to be mre of their man. His Excellency would not, did' not confer tlie enatorhip until he had from Gov. ' WaicuT a written repudiation of the Democratic cth of January platform and the action of the Convention. A leading Republican of this city, who had no motive in misrepresentation, tated uneip.ivocally that a letter was received from lijv. Wauiiir, written tw n friend here, in w hich he. did what was made the condition' ot Iiis appointment, repudiate the rcM!u ti"ii and action cd' tie of January Conven tioii. Then, and not until then, w t- the v.tc-int peat in the Senate filled. The appointment tlius made t a rrralded to the country ti.nuh tlie Sute Dcpastincnt, as one which would l.ieak the backbone ot tiie Ii.di.m a Democracy. And it was accepted by the Imü.tna Republicans as h iving th.it oh'eot in view. Wo nny, a the organ iLrcJ, have no coneeption of a self f.nrihciug act t r a jvatriotic policy" in fact, we h ive none if fUih is the chancter of Gov ernor ilcr.Tv's appointment. A Jittt ltrbuke. We are very jrlad bj olserve by the Senate pro reed in pa that that contemptible creature. Siintncr of M i-sachusetts, has met with a proper rebtike from two of his brother Republican Senators, Ilrowning of Illinois and Feen-Ien of Maine. Decent Republicans, even of the ultra Abolition school, nre getting tired of the domineering spirit exhibited by Sumner in his treatment of men who do not wjuire with his notions of what constitutes loyalty. The Massachusetts Senator used to talk a j;ood deal about the "crack of the overseer's w hip" over the heads of Democrats by such men as Davis and Toombs. Rut Davis and Tootnbs never exhibited half the aringnnce and supercil iousness with Democrats that Sumner does with Air political associates. Arrogant and overbearing as he is, however, now that his party is in pow er. Sumner is in iealityamo-t miserable coward. When atticked by Pre-ton S. wearing down to a bed Cord in si.e. I did not finish my letter, because, while in writing it, I he . id of the order ot the Secretary of War as to telegraphs and newspapers of Mc Ciellau taking up his headquarters in Ranks's division. I thought the light hid come and burnt my let er. Well, we could hear nothing authentic, but everybody believed that two divisions had gone toward Manassas, and orders given fur a general battle on the whole line. The railroad cars were all seized; troops were hurried to the Relay House. Ranks had cro ed the Potomac had taken Harper's Ferry, Charlestown had gone toward Winchester, been whipped badly in lull retreat no, that was a lal.e rumor; he had only been repulsed received 1 ein loi cements, taken
Winchester, and was ready, with Lander, to swoop down through Manassas Gap to the June tion. Me intime Hooker had lerried across to Aequia Creek the whole center had advanced a terrific fight was going on "intelligent contraband" had come in, who said it was true men could even hear the guns. Anxiety and expectation were on every face. There was hutrying to and fro. Hacks w ere in requisition ; trunks wete speedily packed; hotel and board bills suddenly paid. The railroad trains going to Baltimore could not accommodate a quarter ot the tid ing multidudes, w ho thought they w ere surely escaping from the Richmond Tobacco Watehouse prisons. Abolitionists were triumphant. They had gained their policy. They believed the Confederates would be beaten. If so. the Abolitionists would get all the credit. If they did not, it was becau-e we had not emancipates.! the negroes had returned slaves from tiie army and because of military incapacity must change Generals and change jo'icy. Weill All got up yesterday morning full of exject ition, w hen about two o'clock tleneral McClell an appe ire 1 011 the avenue, gay as a May morning. No fight on the Potomac no advance on Manassas no movement by Hooker Ranks had cros.-ed to Harper's Ferry had taken Charlestown without any opposition and lor some reason what is it? noixxly knows whether change of dans, bid arrangements, or what his army had quietly stopjH' i. concluded to remain for the present, and General McClellan repiired to town. Indeed, there was s.oine tall swearing. The thing h id fizzled, or there never wis anything in tlie alleged movement to jnstifv all this amount of fuss and feathers." We had all our anxiety, speculation, anticipated inauguration of Abo litionism for nothiug. Lincoln swore forgot to tell smtitty stories called a Cabinet meeting at night had a devil of 11 time generally and lurt'uer I nm not advised, but w ill predict that unless McClellan makes his fight this week he will be driven from the chief command.

SKx-Govemor (now Senator) Wright, in a speech he made near this city during the Presidential campaign of 1-."G, is rejtorted to lu.ve given vent to the following: "If you have good, honest and intelligent men elect them lor your township trustees, your next best elect for your county commissioners, and yiur fool send to Cnnyrt." The Gov ernor in apointing Mr. Wright to the Vi'.caucy iu the United Slates Senate occasioned by the expulsion of Mr. Rright, must evidently h ive been governed by the principle of the ExGovcrnor. as avowed in the above true morsel, nt N'.i.-t tine in his ease. Wonder if Mr. Wright is still of the same opinion? Columbia City Acic. FonMl.lt RrSlDLNTS OK LaFAYLTTE AMONG THE Rkkils. Among the prisoners taken at Fort Donelson, we learn there are three commissioned officers who formerly resided iu this city David Wolfe, Thomas Near, Eugene 11. Cogswell and Arcbey Cbipman. Wolfe was at one time proprietor of the Verandah Saloon, on the Market space. When captured he was a Major of a Tennessee rebel regiment, recruited in tluj vicinity of Memphis, which position we learn he voluntarily accepted. Mr. N'ear will be remembered as an engineer, on the N'ew Albany road, several vears ago, and lately proprietor of the Columbia street bow ling alleys. Cogswell is a jour printer, a native of N'oblesville, this State, and was for several years employed in the offices in this city. At the outbreak of the rebellion he abandoned a "fat" sit in the Memphis Atalanrhe office, to accept a Lieutenant's xisition. Mr. Chipm in was baggageman on the Lafayette and Indianapolis railroad previous to his departure South. Roth Near and Chipman, who held Lieutenancies in the rebel service, were pressed into ranks at Memphis, a they informed their friends here by letter shortly afterward. They are, we understand , among the Tennessee prisoners at Chicago. Lafayrtte Journal.
