l"rin the Hoinf Journal, N-w York. J1. 1. W illion Herrmann. The following incident concerning Herrmann, the great magician, who appears at the Academy of Muic, will doubtless interest some of our readers.; "My dear sir," said a recently introduced acU tint ance to us, "allow ine to say, with the profoundeat ssib!e of apologies, that you do not knw what you arc talking about." We had been discussing the art magiea, as now professed, and I h id been denying the possibility of any m m's deceiving me without nppiratu and immediately under my nose. It will be evident bom this, that I had a profound faith in my natural rapidity and aeuteness of observation a faith which, to tell the tmth, I hid until this evening alwavs considered luv elf perfectly jus tilled in entertaining. "Nonsense, my ood fellow," waj my re spouse, "you do not suppose tint you could pick luv pocket without mv knowing when and how it w as done?" "Peih ips not," was the quiet reply. "However would vou be contented if, without doing so. I was to tell you every thing you had iu all your pockets?" 1 laughed pleasantly. "Mos certainly." " Imprimis, a watch in v our right hjud waistcoat pocket." "You siw the guard," I said, still smiling. "Made by Thompson, of Liverpool." "Somebody has told you." "In your left waistcoat pocket, thirty seven cents small silver, copper and one English halfpenny." I examined my left hand waistcoat jiocket. He was right. How the deuce did he lind that out?" "Vou hare no jackets in your pantaloons, except the old fashioned fob." "Well, what is in that?" "A watch kev and a small silver toothpick." The watch key was there. It was an old one which had managed to remain there since it had found its entrance to that receptae'e. Hut the toothpick Iliad lost it for some three days. Mv hand dived after it, and there it was. Mv under jaw dropped, and I tared at my acquaintance uneasily, as he continued: "In the left bie tst pocket of your coat nre five letters" of theJC he gave me the address of two, written by myself, but not yet osted "a lead pencil, F iber's No. 2" it was true "and a forte mnnnaie. Shall I tell vou what is not iu that?" "No."
How did the scamp know that there was no money if? : '- "Hut 1 will tell you what there is. There is a lock and a long lock of blonde hair in a half sheet of letter paper with the name of " "Theie is no necessity," I mutt ere I hastily, as I rose. "And the age, I think, eighteen." "Excuse me, my very dear friend, I believe in you now. If Old Nick is not at v our elbow constantly but I beg your pardon. Good evening. 1 really can't s ity." It was my first visit to Herrmann. Suffice it that it will be my last. That man needs an unconscionably long spoon who eats with the gen tlem.ui in black, or any of his particular friends, in private. The wine may be gord and the meat unexceptionable, but the company iuterfeies sadly with my digestion. Professor Herrmann will make his first and only appearance in this city, at Masonic Hall, on next Tuesday evening. In ! Icl! (eoriie W. Pitts informs us that he
