LAV BOOKS. NEU AND VALUABLE WORK FOR LAWTF.RS. JUSTICES OF TIIF. PF.ACE. And nil Connected icith th Judicial Administration of iMt Gwermmmt. rjP Btl WZ M Tk rJT TC K Of llieMtateof ndlnna, CONTAINING THE RK VISED TATUTES OF 1S52 with Ui amendments thereto, aikI the uiequeD legislation, with in.tr ainl reference . Judicial deciaions. rUTIt) IT JAMES GAVIN AND OCAR ORO. Volume 1, Publixbcd by HI;ilAll Ac IX)l illTV, IKMAeArOUM. Judge David .TlcDonald, one of the most eminent lawyer of the Slate, volunteered the fullowin, ecommendation of the work: Statttks or Iümama, bt Gati A Hod. Some months asro, the above named gentlemen iued proposals for publhtut;, iu two volumes octavo of some MM) pages each, al the statutes of the State paed since ISM, with annotations. The brut volume of the work is now pnblished ; and the manner of Its execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserves the thanks of the profession. The imperfect manner of publishing our statutes undei State authority, has always been a source of great inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. The revfeton of 1S52, a well as the statutes passed since that year, miirht almost aswell have been published without any iudex. Up tc th istime the lawyer ha constantly been under the necesaity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our Statute U find any particular enactment. And every one knows how annoying and provoking this is, especially in the hurry of buMOeas as in our Courts. Happily for the profesf-ion, the publication under consideration promises a Letter state of things in the future. The first volume o f!esrs. Gavin A Ilord's work contains an excellent and copious index, which to every practicing lawyer in the i täte is itself worth the money which the volume costs. . The volume under review contains another excellence Hits pages are supplied with valuable marginal indices, o that a glance at the margin is sufficient to apprise the eaderof the contents of the page. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in this volume Is a good collection of the subjects of all legislation elnce Hol. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any given subject had first to find what was relevant to it in the Ke vision of 1h52, and then to turn
over the pages of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to
see how far recent legislation may have repealed or mjd -fled the provisions contained in that Revision, and even then he would often feel doubt whether he had found all the legislation on the subject of his inquiry. Mer. Gavin and Mord have relieved ua of all this trouble and
doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pages
all the statutes made since 1S5I. on toe same subject. Thus, on paces 373 to 377 of their first volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on the subject o husband and wife, including the act of 1V2 and three act of 1C7. And they have followed the same mode o co-cM-ation, In appropriate consecutive pages, In regard to all other topks of legislation. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate notes contained in the volume In question. This: volume include the Constitution of the United States, th. Constitution of Indiana, and several important acts ol Virginia and statutes of Congress, and a larxe portion o cur own statutes now in force. The numerous decisions o the Courts n the various provisions contained in theie Cwsti. tntinns and statutes are found at the bottom of the appropriate pages, in the f.rm of nest, brief and accurate iioteand reference. Messrs. Gavin A Hord seem to have performed this part of their work exceedingly aril. It must have cot them much care and labor. I?y it they have greatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and have well merited his grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review i highly 'editable to the diligence, accuracy, talents and the taste o its editor. a well as to the mechanical skill and neatnes of Its publishers, and it must raise the Just expectation oi the profession, a to the value of the second volume, which we understand will be forthcoming in a few months, and which ill contain the cole of pleading and practice o lsöt. with sbeqnetit amendments and other statutes.
Without any concert with the editors or publishers ot the
volume in question, the writer of this article has been In
diiced to compose and publish this little review of the book.
Solfly because he believes the editors and publishers de
serve high commendation for their performance. He,
therefore, deems it but just to them, without being solic
itod to it by any one, to publish this notice of the boo-,
nver his ow n proT name. DA ID MclHjN ALD. Indi.tii.iiiolis, November 1, 160.
