Jtld(; Pu lil .lIcDoimldy one of the most rmint'iit lawyrr of thr .St:tr, volunterrrd the following fConimpnd.itidi of the work; Srart tk or ltmA, i Oavij A Hnn. Some month ago, the alovr nanu-d gentlemen iued pnpnalfor pullihiug, in two volume octavo of Komr h'K) pages each, ul the titatutea of the Stat ped since ls51, with annotation. The tirst volume of the work , now published ; and thr mannrr of its r xrcution, both mrchanically and editorially, d - rvrs the thanks of thr profession. The tmpvrfect manner of publishing our statutes nndei State authority, has always been a source of great inconvenience to thr Indiana Lawyrr. Thr revision of 152, a well as the ftatutes passed since that year, might almost aawrllhave been published without any index. I'p tc th time thr lawyer ha constantly been under the necessity of turning ovrr, leaf by leaf, thr volumes- o our tatutr to find any particular enartmeut. And every one knows how annoying and provoking this is, especially in the hurry of business as in our Courts. Happily for tbr profession, the publication under consideration promises a better state of things In the future. The first volume o Jlessrs. Gavin & Hord'a work cont.nina an excellent and copious index, which to every practicing lander in the täte is itself worth the money which the volume rotü. The volume under review contains another excellence llit pages are supplied with valuable marginal indices, to that a glance at thr margin is nutlicient to apprise the raderof the contents of the pae. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in this volume is a good collection of the subjects of all leglsl.it ion sive 151. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any given subject had first to find what was relevant to it in the Revision of 152, a;l then to turn over the pages of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to see how far rrcent legislation may have repealed or m xi -fled thr provision contained in that Revision, and even lhMi be would oflrn feel doubt whether he had found all the legirlation on thr subject of hi inquiry. Messrs. (iavin and Hord have relieved us of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive page all thr statutes made irce KM. on thr name subject. Thus, on page 373 to 377 of their first volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on the subject o hnsband and wife, including the act of ls52 and three actof 1"Ö7. And they have followed thr same mode o. cooration, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to all other topics of legislation. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate note contained In the volume in question. This volume Includes the Constitution of the United States, tht Constitution of Indiana, and several important acts ol Virginia and statutes of Congress, and a large portion o our own statutes now In force. The numerous decision o the Courts on the various provisions contained in thi:e Cnsti tutions and statutes are found at the bottom of the appropriate pages, in thr form of neat, brirf and accurate uotea:ri r ferem es. 3Iessrt. Gavin A Hord seem to have performed this part of their work exceedingly well. It must have cost them much care and labor. By it they have greatly lessened the labor of thr practising lawyer, and have well merited his grateful approval. in every re-j-ct the volume under review idbifc'hly reditable to the d. licence, accuracy, talei.ta and Ihr taste o ft editor. a well a to the mechanical s'sill and neatnes of its publisher, and it must r;ie the Jut excta!ion oi the profession, as to the alue of the Seeon! Voiuuie, t hicli we understand wiil le forthcoming in a few months, and w hit h will contain the code of pleading and practice 1&,2, w ith bsequent amendments and other statutes. Without any concert with the editors or publishers oi thr volume in question, the w Titer of this article has been indue, d to compose and puMih this hi tie review of the book, solely because be bebeves the editors and publishers dr. sre Lih commendation f.r their performance.
