Off the Mute of ti cl I it n CONTAINING THE RF.VlSKb 'TATUTES OF with the aiueiidmeritA tiiereto stt'l the sdbseqlleti legislation, w ith note and retereticcs . judicial decision. riiiTr.n bt JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR 0RÜ. V.!tiuiel,PubIihedby v inn t.in v, i.Musrarous. Jtidtre Iavid M cDonn Id one of the most eminent lawyer of the State, volunteered the followin. ecommetidation of the work: Sumitj or I.vniASA, r Gamm ä Hoki. Some montb ao, the above named gentlemen .-ued proponl.for publishing, in two volumes octavo of .ome moo pa-es each, al the statutes of the State na.sed since 11, with annotations. The tii st volume of the w ork is now publisheilaud the manner of its exrension, both mechanically and editorially, deserves tbe t batiks of the profession. The imjierfect manner of publishing our t-tatute under State authority, has always beeu a sourre f great inconveiiietice to the Indiana 1-twyer. The revision of Ki, awell a the Matute jas..ed since tbat year, miirht almost aswellhave been published without any imtt-x. Up tc th intime the lawyer h.i constantly been under the necessity of turninir over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our atatute. to find any particular enactment. And every one knows how annoying and provoking this is, especially in the hurry of buriiK Ss a in our Courts. Happily for the Irofession, the publication under con.-Heration promises a etter state of things in the future. The first volume r, Jlessrs. Gavin A liord's work contains an excellent and copious index, which to every practieinn l.twyer in thtatels itself worth the money which the volume cnt. The volume under review contains another exrell.-nce Vllits pafces are stipplied with valuable marginal Indice, so that a KlaiK-e at the mark;in is sufficient to apprbe the eadt rof the content of the page. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in this volume is a rood collection of the ul jects of afl legislation since 14S1. Heretofore, the lawyer In examning our legislation 011 any given subject had first to find what was relevant to it in the Revision of 1n.VJ, and then to turn over the pKs of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to iee how far recent legislation msy have repealed nr nusl'f.ed the provisions contained in that Rev ision, and even then be would often feel doubt whether he bad found all the legislation on the ubject of his inquiry. Messrs. Gavin and llord have relieved u of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive page. all tbe statutes made since 1S51. on the same subject. Thus, on pars 3T3 to 377 of th ir firt volume they have follectetl all t.ur legislation, now in force, 011 the subject o husband and w ife, including the act of ts.12 and three ;ic of 1H57. A rul they h:i"'e ' rd the same mode coocation, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to all other topics .f legisl.tiioii. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate notes contained in the volume in question. This volume includes the Constitution of the United States, th. Constitution of Indiana, and several important acts ol Virginia and statutes of Congress, ami a large portion o our own ,tati'te now in force. The numerous decisions o the Courts on the vario provisions contained iu these Constis tutiott and statutes are found at the bottom of the appropriate pasres, in the form of neat, brief and accurate notend reference Xessrs. Gavin A Hord seem to have performed this part of their work exceedingly well. It must have cost them much cue and lalxr. p.y it they have greatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and have well merited hi grsteful approval. In every respect the volume under review ishighly 'editable to the dilli.'ence, accuracy, talents and the taste o its editors, a well a to the mechanical skill and neatness of its publisher-', and it mu-t raise the just expectation ol the profession, a to the value of the second volume, which we understand will W forthcoming in a few months, and which will contain the code of pleading and practice o 1 ,".'.!, with s.Ksequer.t an'.enoniesits and other statutes. Wi'hout any concert w ith The etit rsor publisher ol the volume in question, the -titer of thi article has been indin ed to compos and publish this little review .f the bHik, sidtdy because he believe the editor and publishers deserve hich commendation for their performance. He, therefore, deem it but just to them, without being solicited to it by any one, to publish this notice of the boo-, over hi own proper name. DAVID McDONALD. Indianapolis, Sovrmhrr 1, lCi.
