CoLo.tiL Stetie SrtECii. Last Tuesday
evening, January Ulat, we had the pleasure of
hearing an address from Colonel Steele, ot the 3-lth regiment, explaining the reason of his resignation, and also describing the situation of that division of the army, which, he was sorry to say, was not f o farorable as he could desire. His resignation proceeded from two causes: The expo
sure and arduous duties of camp life brought on an
attack of rheumatism and rendered him unfit for
Ferrice; and, secondly, his superior officers tyranired over him to a deeree unendurable, and the
inferior officers were disobedient and turbulent,
and continually conspired against him to procure his removal, in order that they might stand a
chance 'of promotion. And so, to prevent the
regiment bcuig torn uunder and disgraced hj internal dissension, he resigned his command, and thus prevented further disturbance. ! ? His ppeech was mild and conciliatory, forming quite a contract with hi unreasonable euthu$iaia m few months p He bewailed the calamity of war, and regretted that American citizeus were seeking' to destroy cue. another; he said that tbe reaMk why the two nrmiea did nut hakten a general engagement was because erery Foldier felt in his own boorn that he wad fighting his own brethren, and was 'naturally very reluctant; and although. their h.mda were raided to strike, yet they hesitated to deal the destructive blow, be caoc they could not feel otherwise than as brethrn of the tame blood and lineage. . . He dkl not talk this way six months ago. Then he railed the Southerners traitors, tones, enemies to free Government and secession scoundrels, and ejuouied every uiau to go and fight them till no rt txfl" should Ik? left to tell the tale; but now he mi'dly terms them "erring" brethren," and does not tsetiu to be so d?perately rantankerous for war as foruierly. He is no doubt convinced that war is not the way to reconstruct the Union; he lped that the omnfpotcutiower mtr't avert the dire calamity of any further conflicts,' and expressed the earnest deire that the bitter cup may

Metropolitan Hall. The Invisible Prince is in the full tide of puccess at our popular theater. It is most beautiful, and well worthy a visit from our 'citizens: The gtory is an interesting one, the scenery gorgeous, the dresses dazzling and costly, the acting all th?t could be desired, and wfieti we add that the principal part of the vocalzation is intrusted to and executed by the charming cantatrice, Miss Marion Macarthy, that is of itself a guarantee that it is well executed. The fun of the piece rests with Felix A. Vincent; that, also, is a sufficient announcment. Exhibition at the School of Sisters or Puovidence. Last night the parents and guar

Nothing in 'the worM could better illustrated the conscientious pains and the unselfish devotion of those who teach them than did the excellent and admirable performances ot" the children who attend the school of the Sisters of Providence.
