CONTAINING THE REVISED TATUTES OF 1K52 with the amendment thereto, .Mid the sulwequen legislation, with note and reference . Judicial decision.?. somen ar JAMES GAVIN AND 0SCA11 0RD. Volume l,Rnblihed by m.MillA.M Ai IXH iiHTV, lHIAArOUa. Judge rnvll ,t!cI)onuld, one of the most eminent lawyers of the State, volunteered the following ecommcndatlon of the work: Statxtf.h or Indiana, b Gavin & Hord. Some month ago, the above named gentlemen issued proposals for publishing, in two volume octavo of some S0 pae. each, al the t tutes of the State passed fcince 1S51, with annotation. The first Volum of the work is now published; and the manner of its execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserves the thank of the profession. The imperfect manner of publishing our statute undel StAte authority, ha always been a source of great inconvenience to the Indiana lawyer. The revision of 1SV2, ar well a the statute passed since that year, might almot-t aswellbave been published without anj index. Up tc thirtime the lawyer ha cnstantly been under the necessity of tuniing over, leaf by leaf, the volume. o our statute to find any particular enactment. And every one ktiowshow annoying and provoking this I., e.it-ially in the hurry of bu Miles a in our Court. Happily for the profession, the publication under consiU ration promise a better state of thing In the future. The tir.t volume o Messrs. Gavin A Hord's work contains an excellent und copiou index, whk'b to every practicing lawyer in the late I itself worth the money w uich the volume costs. The volume under review contain another excellence til its pages are suptdied with valuable marginal indices

othat a (tUiK-e at the margin i suQicient to apprise the

eaderof the content of the pae.

Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in

thi volume i a good collection of the subject of all le

islation since lsöl. Heretofore, the lawver in examaiing

our legislation on any given subject had firt to find what

wa relevant to it in the Revision of 1V.2, and then to torn

over the page of the volume of subsequent Statutes, to

ee how far recent legislation m.vr have repealed or m.id

fied the provision contained in that Revision, and even then he would often frei doubt whether he had found all

the legislation on the subject of hi inquiry. Messrs. Ga

via and Hord have relieved us of all thi trouble and

doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pages

all the stntute ma-ie since ivjj. on the same suMeot.

Thus, on psi;e 373 to 377 of their first volume they hare

collect ed all our leglsHtion, now in force, on the snt ject o husband and wife, including the act of s52 and three act: of l.v57. Ami they have followed the same niodeoico-

ocation, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to all

other topic ;f IcijiMitioti.

A still more valuable feature are the cooiou and accu

rate note contained in the volume in question. This vol

ume includes the Constitution of the Uu.ted State, tht Constitution of Indiana, and several important acts ol Vir

ginia and statutes of Congress, ard a l.are portion o our

own statutes nivw in force. Tne tiumernus leciMon o the

Courts ou the various provisions contained in these Constis

tutions ai:d statute are found at the bottom of the appro

priate pages, in tne form of neat, nrief and accurate note

au 1 refT iices. Messrs. Gavin & Hord seem to have per

formed thi part or tlieir worn exceedingly well. It must

have cost them much care and labor. Ry it they have greatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and

have wen mentea n: grateiui approval. In every respect the volume under review iahichly editable to the dilltence, accuracy, talent and the taste o

its edit 's, a well a to the mechanical skill and neatness of its publishers and it mut raise the just expectation ot th pr.feMon, a to the value of the second volume, which we understand will he forthcoming in a'rw month, and w hich will contain the code of pleading and practice o ls.r2, with sbse4uent an-eiidmenta and other statute.-.. Without any concert with the editor or publishers ol the volume In question, the writer of thi art cle b . been induced to compoe and publish this little review of the book, solely because be believe the editor and publishers deserve hi.h comme'idation for their jerformance. Hf therefore, deems it but jut to them, without being solicited to it by any one, to publish this notice of the book, ever his own prfer name. DAVID McDONALD. Indianapolis, November 1, 1"60.
