Thi consi leration will make the profpecttve load I

of taxation vastly more tolerable. Men will determine to -und up tinder it, who otherwise would atuuible and fill. Had Stanton been Secretary of War from th be'm-uuj.o.ie hundred millions

of taxation would now siitlice, where we have one htm irei an I fifty indboti. i We analyze this matter of taxation because it i.s time the people had looked it full in the fce j and bejran to jrepare for the part they mu-t bear ; in it. Few l tbe hanUhip of a condition of' war haTe lMen known thus tar. We have been j Koiitg upon credit. Not one day's cost has yet j been paid, and such cost i some two million of j dollar. The ajrrepate tax nlut to be levied will not be erpjal to one day's c?t. Neverthe I e.s thia tax i a beginning of payment. It i for '

the payment of inttrrtt upon the pat and the iuimeiliately prospective cost of the war. We have been Urrowing to pay interest, which we cannot do longer except an enormous sacrifice. A the war sdiall be prolonged, the intere?t on loan will of course tjrow, and taxes will grow also. Itut we must hope the war will not be prolonged. We man bot e that General McClell m has plana which will bring it to a clone and leave the necessities of taxation within the capabilities of the country. We have this hope, and it has daily prown stronger and stronger a Gen. McCle!In ha disregarded the bow l of abolitionism and taken his orn good time to adrance. Every teaaon conspire to make it hi duty to take his own good time. The adrance, when it shall be m ule, will be decisire of the fate of tlie Union. If it fail, the Union will have fail), for foreign rowers wil,not wait long weary months for further preparation by us: they will recognize the Southern Confederacy, which, treat the fact now a we may, will terminate tlie contest. How transcendent!? important then that Gen. MeCiellan should disregard the clamor of abolitionism and make assurance doubly sure that victory will go with hi standard along the whole line. After all, the question of the Union witl he decided before these one hundred and fifty millions of taxes shall hare been paid. If they shall le pad for the Union preserved they will seem as but the weight of a fe it her co an pared with their weicht if they shall fie paid for .he Union lost.

already won. He has yet to learn the lirsl duty of a so'ulicr obedience. Hav ing not vet learn

' 'h?j see in them the handwriting ou the wall which points to the speedy end of their flagitious career. When, at the next election for members of Congress, tlie people arise in their might and hurl from their seals in Cougtess those men who now so wickedly misrepresent theui, the just and wise principles of the Democratic pcrty w ill again guide the destinies of the nation. 1 he radicals know this, and they are trving to make the must of their brief lease of

to tncir ow n ne.trts. Jl tne war is to re-uit in an unconstitutional 'wiping out' of slavery then, the te.-ult is the destruction of the Constitution and the Union. We are no defenders of slavery, because we defend its Constitutional rights. If we demand a jury trial for a murderer when others would lynch him, are we defenders of murder? The citizen ceases to be loyal when he advocates lynch law on a small sc.ie or on grand scale." This is the logical retort. We commend it to such radicals as ure honest in their radicalism. "It is plain," our contempirary says in conclusion, "that an Act of Confiscation or a bill of Attainder would create a perpetual source of war. The rresent controversy being ended, the Courts would declare it unconstitutional and void, all titles to pn-perty given under it would fail, the Got eminent would be itself uu ible to h jld any it took, the States would be compelled to aid their citizens iu recovering property if any had been removed, and the complications arising would be Countless and woud lead to la-ting enmity. 'Treat your enemy as if he might one day be your friend,' is eminently the motto for this war. If tlie Union is to be restored, its future irlorv w ill depend on the fact that it has been restore! by the strong mm of the Constitution and the law. If the attempt at restoration is to be carried on with acts of conliscation, proclamations of emancipation, and other proceedings which, instead of being the nets of our constitutional (iovernment, are but acts of an incensed and indignant people, and it by the-e means we should conquor the rebellion, we shall find ourselves, when the

war is over, standing among the ruin of our Republic; and where the noblest fabric of human government once stood, we shall behold around us only its shattered remains, out of which the generations to come will find it impossible even to imagine the former splendor. We beseech gentlemen iu Washington to regard these truth. Let us sav e the Constitution. If it can be carred on its triumphant course over the present obstacle-., it will be forever hereafter the rallying point for the hopes of all nations, strengthened, piiritied, and glorified by its sublime victory." We need not tell our readers that we second this just and stirring exhortation with all our hearts. The Dentil of (ien. Zollicof f cr Hi Iat Word vvitli Col. I'r) - vv ho shot lllin. Last evening we had a conversation with a reliable gentleman who arrived direct from Somerset, Kentucky, by way of Lexington, and from him we gather the following particulars of the death of Gen. Zollicott'er, the leader of the rebel fortes at Mill Springs, Kentucky, on Sunday last. Our informant obtained the particulars from C d. Fry, of the 4th Kentucky regiment, who kill' Zoilicoller. Col. Fry was lying in ambush with a squad of his regiment, when Zollh oher ap pro.o-hed at the head of a detachment of troops, which detachment was marching rapidly iu advance of the main Confederate forces. When the General w ith his advance had ai rived within twenty leet of the ambush where Fry and his men were concealed, the Colonel sprang forward and drew his navy revolver and pre-cuteJ it at the Confederate General. We may here state, parenthetically, that Co. Fry, who hail from laxingtou, and Gen. Zoilicoller were for inmj vears personal fiiends, and in their youthful days associates in the saine school. Upon discovering Colonel Fty across his path, General Zoilicoller threw up both his hand and exclaimed: "Hold, Fry; you would not shoot your old friend, would you?" Then placing hi. right hand on his pistol and pointing back to his command, continued: "Look! there are nil your friends' which remaik was evidently intended to draw Fry's attention away from him, while he would improve the occasion by shooting Fry dead in his tracks. The brave Colonel did not heed the remark, but said: "I wiil attend to you first," and pulling the trigger, Zollicoffer fell with a ball pierced through his breast. Ht ht word were. "I am killed, all's well,' and with a groin expired. The detachment then turned on their hceis and retreated to the main body of the ;.nnv.
