Of the State of ndlnna CONTAINING THE REVISED 'TATUTES OF 152 with the amendment thereto, And the ubi.equen legislation, with notes and refcrencea . judicial deciion. EDITED BT JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR OKD. Volume 1, Puhliehed by ni.ttiHAM A; llOl liHTY, ISD1A5AIÜU, Jltdre David ."tcIonald one of the most eminent lawyers of tbe State, volunteered the followiu. ecüinnieiKlaüon of the work: STaTTTEa or Ixdiaxa, at Gaviü A UoKD. Some month aro, the alnive named gentlemen issued proposals for pub lUhiiiK. in two volumes octavo of aouie 00 pares each, al the statute of tbe State paved since 1S51, with annotations. The Br.t volume of the work is now published ; and the manner of its execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserves the thanks of the profession. The imperfect manner of publi.-aini our statutes undei State authority, has always been a source of great inconvenience to the Indiana Iwiayer. Tbe revision of 1V2, a well as the statutes pa.e-d since that year, mieht almost aswell have been publi.hei without any index. Up tc thilirae the lawyer has constantly been under the nccesaity of tuniinr tver, leaf by leaf, tbe volumes o our statute to önd any particular enactment. And every one knows how annoying and provoking this is, especially in the hurry of business as in our Court. Happily for tbe profession, the publication under consideration promise a better state of things In the future. The first volume o Jlesers. (lavin A Honl'a work contains an excellent and copious index, which to every practicing lawyer in the tale 1 itself worth the money which the volume costs. The volume under review contains another excellence til its paxes are supplied with valuable marginal indices, so that a glance at the margin is sufficient to apprise the eaderof tbe contents of the leasee. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in this volume ia a (rood collection of the subjects of all legislation since 1851. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any given subject bad first to find what was relevant to it in the Revision of 152, and then to turn over the patre of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to see how far recent legislation may have repealed or mod -fled the provision contained in that Revision, and even then be would often feel doubt whether he had found all tbe legislation on tbe subject of his Inquiry. Messrs. Gavin and llord have relieved u of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pae all the statutes made since 1S51. on the Mint subject. Thus, on pages 373 to 377 of their first volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on the subject o husband and wife, including tbe act of 152 and three act of 157. And they have followed the same mode o. coocation. In appropriate consecutive pages, In regard to all other topic of legislation. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate notes contained in the volume in question. This volume include the Coustitation of the United States, tb Constitution of Indiana, and several important arts ol Virginia and statutes of Congress, and a large portion o onr own statutes now in force. Tbe numerous decisions o the Courts on the various provisions contained in these Constis tutions and statutes are found at the bottom of the appropriate pa ye, in the form of neat, brief and accurate uoteand rrfVrwüces. Messrs. Gavin A Herd seem to have performed this part of their work exceedingly well. It must have cost them much care and labor. Ity it they have greatly lessened the laln.r of the practising lawyer, and have well merited his grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review ishiuhly reditabie to the U'.lbirence, accuracy, talents and the taste o Its editors, as well as to the mechanical skill and neatnes of ita publisher-, and it mut raise the jut expectation ot the profession, as to tbe value of the eeond volume, which w understand will be forthcoming in a few months, and which will contain the code of pleadir.g and practice o 1S52, with sbsequent airvendmeuts and other statutes. Without any concert with the editors or publHhers ol the volume in question, the wri.e r of this article has lee u induced to compose and publish this lit tie review of thehok, o-y b-canse he believe the editors and publishers deserve high commendation for their performance. H, therefore, deems it but just to them, without being solü;ited to it by any one, to publish this notice of the bou, ever bis own proper name. Ii.WIU MclKJNALD. Indianapolis, November 1, DS0.
