EMTEII BV JAM KS fi.WIN AND OSCAR ORD. Volume 1, Published by n 11; it Am a doi i;ui y, indi vrsrous. Judpc David 71 r Donald one of the most m!n. nt lawyer of tbe State, volunteered the follow uiecoinmendatlon of the work: Statiti or Isoiana, ar Gxvim A HoaD. Some months ago, the above named get;tleineii issued proposals for publishing, in to volumes octavo of mime MH) pages each, al tbe statutes of the State paf.ed since lvM, w:th annotations. The first volume of th; work is now published ; and the maimer of it execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserves the thanks of the profession. Tbe Imperfect tuajiner of publishing our statutes und.-t State authority, has always been a source of gre;it inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. Tbe" revision of Ihö'2, as well as the statutes passed since that year, might almost aswellhave been published without any index. Up tc tbistinie the lawyer ha constantly been under the necebaity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our statutes to find any particular enactment. And every one knows how annoying and provoking this is. especially in the hurry of business as in our Courts. Happily for the profession, the publication under consideration promise a better state of things in the future. The first volume o trsrs. IJavin A fiord's work contains an excellent and copious index, hieb to every practicing Uwyrr in the tale Is itself worth the money which the volume costs, Tbe volume nnder review contains another excellence 111 its pages are supplied with valuable marginal indice, totbat a glance at the margin is suthcient to apprise the eader of the contents of the page. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in this volume is a good collection of tbe subjects of all legislation since 1-151. Heretofore, the lawyer in exaruaiin our legislation on any given subject had first to find what was relevant to it In the Revision of liö'J, and then to turn over the puft.'H of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to see how far recent legislation may have repealed or m si Bed the provisions contained in that Revision, and even then he would dien feel doubt whether he bad found all tbe legislation on the subject of his inquiry. Messr. (iavln and Iford have relieved us of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive paes all the statutes made since KM. on tbe same subject. Thus, on paga 373 to 377 of their flrt volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on the subject o husband and wife, including the act of lsf2 and three act of 1nT7. And they have followed the same modeoicoocalioti, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to ail other topics of legislation. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate note contained in tbe volume in question. This volume includes the Constitution of the United States, tht Constitution of Indiana, and several iaqiorUt.ta.-ts oi Virginia and statutes of Congress, and a large portion o our own statutes now In force. The numerous decisions o the Courts on the various provisions contained in these Coiitis tutions and statutes are found at the bottom of tbe appropriate pae, in the form of neat, brief and accurate noteand references. Messrs. liavin A Hord seem to have performed this part of their work excee dingly well. It must have cost them much care and labor. Hy it they have gTeatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and have well merited his grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review ihij;hly reditalde to the di I licence, aecuracv, talent and the ta.-te o its editor, a well as to the mechanical a i 1 1 and tiestnes.' of it publishers, and it mut rsie the jut expectation i tbe profession, as to tbe value of the second volume, vshleh we understand will be forthcoming in a few mouths, and which vi ill contain the code of pleading and practice o lö--, with sbseqtirnt amendment and other statutes. H i;hut any concert with the editor or publishers ol the volume in questiou. the writer of this article has been induced to comp ainl publish this little review f the bo.ik, s.dely because be believes the editors and publishers deserve high commendation for their performance. He, ther fore, decins it but just to them, without being solicited to it by any one, to publish this notice of the booi.f ovrr bi.s own projer iianie. DAVID MclHiNALD. Indunnpoli, Noember 1, lfirlO.
