Volume 1, Published by IIICallA.TI iV' IXM I.IITY, i.viA.Arri.ia. Judgre David .tlcllonnld, one of the most eminent lawyer of the State, volunteered the followin, ecommendation of tbe work: Statvtm or Istiasa, av Gavtw A lloan. -Some months ago, tbe above named gentlemen lv-uod propoha Is for publishing, in two volume octavo of aome M00 pages each, a I
tbe atatutes of the Mate passed since IStl, with annotation. The ürst volume of the work is now pubh.shed;and the manner of ita execution, rwdh mechank-ally and edito. rlally, deserves the thanks of tbe profession. Tbe imperfect manner of publishing our statute undet State authority, has always been a source f great inconvenience to the Indiana lawyer. The revWoii of InVJ, a well aa the statutes pasted since that year, might almost aswell have t een published without any index. Up tc thistime tbe lawyer ha constantly been under the tiecosaity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volume o our statutes to ünd any particular enactment. Aud every one know bow annoying and provoking this i., especially iu tbe hurry of busmen a in our Courts. Happily for the profession, the publication under consideration promise a better state of things in the future. Tbe Br.t volume o ler. Gavin A Hord's work contains an excellent and copioti index, which to every practicing lawyer in the täte I it-self worth the money which the volume costs. Tbe volume under review contains another excellence Ml it pages art supplied with valuable marginal indices, o that a glance at the margin i sutlicient to apprise the eaderof the contents of tbe page. Another matter of gTeat importance to the lawyer in this volujne is a good collection of the subject of all legislation sirve 1h51. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any given subject bad first to lind u na! was relevant toil in the Revision of 102, and then to turn over the pae. of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to see how far recent legislation my have repealed or mod -fled the provision contained in that Revision, and even then he mould often feci doubt whether he had found il the legislation on the subject of hi inquiry. Mersrs. Gavin and Hon! have relieved us cf all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pages all the statute made since 151. on the same auhjecU Thus, on pares 373 to 377 of their first volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on tbe subject o husband and wife, including the act of 1S52 and three ctof 1S57. And they have followed the same modeo.coocaticn, in appropriate consecutive pages, In regard to all other topica of Irgislation. A still more valuable feature are the copkius and accurate note contained in tbe volume in question. This volume includes the Constitution of the Unite! States, th Constitution of Indiana, and several important act ot Virginia and statutes of Congre., and a large portion o our own itatute now in force. The numerous decisions o the Courts on the various provisions contained in these Const! tutiou. and statutes are found at the bottm of the appropriate rase, in the form of neat, brief and accurate noteand references. Messrs. Gavin 1 Hord seem to have performed tbl part of their work exceedingly well. It must have cost them much care and labor, fly it they have greatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and have well merited his grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review Uhirhly redItable to the dillirence, accuracy, talent and the taste o Its editors, a well a to the mechanical skill and neatness of its publisher, and it must raise the just expectation o: the profession, a to the value of the second volume, which we understand will be fortLcominr in a few months, and which will contain the code of pleading and practice o lsVi, with sbsequent amendments and other statute. Without anyconcert with the editors or publishers ol the volume in question, the writer cf this article has been induced to compose and publish thislittlc review of thebook, solely because he believe the editor and publishers leerve blieb commendation for their performance. He, therefore, deems It but just to them, without leil:g solicited to it by at;y one, to publish this notice of the boot over his own proper n.tme DAVID McDoNALD. Indiami Ii-, November 1. M.
