'.oChnnrc rorMildlrrt." The Journal harps, day after d.ty, upon itt charge that there was no chance for foldiers in the Democratic State Convention, and in thus connection it alludes to the defeat of Mi. HtMtsPArrtÄ for the nomination of Audü.T cf State. We have a letter from a gentleman ni the urmy, dated at Hacon Creek, Ky., January idth, where Mr. ItiMt maif. is, in which he alludes in terms

constituent made puohc the private letters that DavLs had wri'teu to him, and the friend of I'shtr puf!i-liel them iu extras, M:aNeied them tliick the lave ot autumn tlirou.uhout this Con-j:re..-ionHl District. Uhcr usm the stump and every Iil ick Republican iu the District, liom the highest to the lowest, would stick them under the nocit of the Democrats, and Mieeringly nt-k it they could vote lor m h a man a Davis, the author ol uch Iett-is and who had o wantonly villified poor Cooktrly, McLeatiC, 1'aUejsuli, Humphrey s. Hamill, Kckles and Hanna? To h ive heard the IWack Republican hvjocriies then talk, tuie would have thought that Davis was ?o odiuua to tiiem, is honorable men, that the "C',i'ii.rn lariitiot, LouM shun hi i-'iftv And 1"' HJ."!! tl.e in-. as !- foul" Rut in l-i'" there a another Cotigre-Mnan to be elected from this District. The Democrats met in convention at this place and nominated Henry Scciet as their candidate, thus laying Davis on the .hell. This masterly stroke of I ml icy tok the IlU-k Republican wiie workers all aback! Rcfoic Sccre-t whs nominated, you could ee prominent black Republicans, from all parts of the District, taking by the button holes the delegates Iroin the outer counties, and beg of them to nominate Davis. Their idea was, that Davis, by hii course in Congress on the Lecoinpton juotion. had rendered himself so obnoxious to the Rcchanan Democrat, of the District that if .nominated he would Le defeated, und that therefere they could elect -o Congitx their dar-, ling pet, John I. I'-lscr, who was to have been their candidate in that canvass had Davis Leen the regular Democratic nominee. The Democrat, by their action in that convention, thus nipped in the bud John 1. Usher's only hope of e er getting to warm a seat in Congress. What did the Rlack Kepublicans of thi District then do? Oh! Ttll it not in Oath! i'ublish it not in the stmts of Askclott! Why, they took to their bosoms this same individual, John (J. Davis, the author of the letters to that prince of scoundrels and hypocrites, Joe Jones! Yes, they ran a their candidate tor Congress in that canvass and elected him, toi this man Davis, this "misbeliever ,cut throat, dog," upon whose "Jewish garbardine" they had "pat," but eighteen months liet'ore," all manner of tilth nnd dirt. Hut, to the joint. Did those letters written by Davis to his "appreciative constituent" in 151,

smell nasty, ntleusiie to the no-trils of the Cum inercial in lJ"', when Davis was playing a fa!?e part to the ancient faith of his fathers? Was the candidate of the Rlack Republicans of this dis trict to defeat the gallant and true hearted Secreat? Was Davis then "an ignorant, poor-spirited, servile person?" Was h's record then "crooked, marked by infirmity of purpose, hypocrisy and falsehood?" Was he then, in the estimation of the Commercial, "a dirty dog?" Verily, no! for the columns of the Cnnuurcial then teemed with editorial laudatory of the sterling Integrity, and high statesmanlike qualities of John G. Davis, and imploring the Rhak Republicans of this district to rally as one man to his sup;ort. N'ow, forsooth, the Cammrreial parades before its readers Davis's old letters and alloc ts to despise him because ol their contents. Was there ever toich brazen faced impudence, such

The Rost on T.xhrrator, Garkison's paper, furnishes it-, explanation of the disuse of its motto "The Constitution is a covenant with death: and an agreement w ith hell." The explanation : is this that whereas the Constitution id now ab- )

located in relation to the South, "a covenant with deatWjid an agreement with hell" no longer exists he Roston Courier remarks ou the Liberator's explanation us follows: "This, it will be perceived, assumes the disso

lution of the Union as a fact accompll-hed, and I is as treasonable, though not juite so irreverent and profane a. the Liberator's old u.-e of snip- j tural language. Rut will this assumption ait- ! swer? Is there not a covenant with Kentucky

an agreement with Maryland? Is it not the declared policy of the Government to restore all to the uimo.-t jot and tittle, under the Constitution, interfering with slavery only just so far as the unavoidable necessity of the ca;-e my demand? If. therefore, on any such theotv as

the Liberator professes, it has lowered its treason- ; able Rlack Klag, it is surelv leaning on a broken I

mdd, but it mtans that the Democratic party deem the schemes of the Abolitionist a revolutionary as th-.-e of the set -esion;u. and that they wifi nx submit to tn Abolition revolution anv nivre than they will to a Secessiuu one. ThL is an eiirne?t and an honest resolution, and will never be f ttrreadcred for any cause or under auy cir -curiMtances. It will be adopted, as well as the body of the Indiana platform, by every Democratic convention in the country, a'rid will be su tained at the jiolla and everywhere el-e. The sKr.er ttnit the extremists in Congress unler stand thi the better for them and for the coun

try. A party which cast? over a million vote, and which 'a daily winning the -onfidence of all it conservative opponent., which een now is the chief reliance cl the President and General inChief, can not le gagged nor thrust aside when the destiny of the nation U at takc and political gambler are black legsir.g it to ruin. They w ill be heard and felt in defence of the Constitution which limits al! their demands and will guide their entire action. They believe in war for the j reservation of the Uuiun, but they know that it might have been preserved w itliout war if the race of "blood-letter9"bad not refused conciliation and

destroyed all hope of peace. They w ill sustain the war because it is an actual fact, and because they are so loyal themselves that they will not excuse nn illegal attempt to gain redre, even for serious grievance; but they will not permit it to be diverted into partisan or tictional channels. They will enforce jrood faith to the border States, and the same submission to the Constitution by the Kedera! leaders, as they ex net by force of arms from the rebels. They, therefore, dem and, as the Indiana resolutions do, I bertv of tl ie person, of the press, and of speech. They recognize the necessity of the Suspension of the hof,a corpus in States where the judicial authority is extinct; but they insist that in loyal Indiana, Michigan, and New York, where judg'es, jurors, the w hole people iu fact, are irrevocably faithful to the Government, there is no necessity to seize and imprison citizens "without warrant of law, and without r.-Js:gnhig any cause, or giving to the party interested any opportunity for defense." They demand the enforcement or the Constitution, where it can be enforced. They only excuse extraordinary measures, when thev ;;re the result of absolute necessity. In this they ate right. Not n man in Michigan doubts that the jverson? lately carried from this State to Fort Warren, could not have been arrested by regular wairant, imprisoned in this judicial district, tried before the patriotic Judge Wilkin, and a jury of our people, with perfect certainty that they would duly be convicted or acquitted, according to the law and testimony. This voice from Indiana will be re-echoed throughout the loyal States. Its utterances will bo gospel of constitutional liberty, the watch words of patriotism alike against Southern and Northern treason. The Democracy wiil fulfill the bond. ion or tlie l'rcsft. Tnt CoNVf NTioN. We dev ote a large portion ol our space to the publication of the proceedings of the Democratic State Convention, held at Indianapolis on Wednesday last. More than ordinary amount of interest w aslelt iu the Convention bv the Democratic masses, as was attested by the full attendance at the primary meetings held iu the various counties throughout the State, and the very full delegation present at Indianapolis. The influence of the Convention cannot fail to be great ujn the country at large' the more especially so, since by the positions, it assumed it faithluily and fearlessly represented the conservative tuition of the people, both of this Sute and the entire North. The resolutions udopted are clearly expressed, and are outs;okeii and fearless in assuming the jMisitions which the public god demands. They fasten on the sectional party of the North its due sl aie of responsibility fur the piesent evils which afflict the country. In tracing back the cause of rebellion to the continued agitation of the slavery question by Northern demagogues, and of the gigantic and formidable rhape which it has as

sumed, to the persistent refusal of a Republican J Congress to assent to any terms of compromise when besought so to do by the Union men of the j

rsoutn, the re-oiutions io no more man record what has already become history. And it is rightly held that the lesson furnished bv the folly of the past should not fie forgotten, but that, as the only feasible mode of re-establishing a genuine Union, we should strive to aid by the persual of a conciliatory course in building up a Union party in the South, which may overmaster the disunionists by a counter revolution. Support is promised to the war for the suppression of rebellion not to any war waged tor emancipation, and involving the destruction of the Constitution. Goshen Dem.
