CONTAINING THE REVISED TATUTES OF lS.r2 with the anietulment tliereto, nd the subseijuen legialatioti, with notes and referencea . judicial decision?. r.lITKD T JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR 0 R0. Volume 1, Publi:-aed by DIXiH AH X DOl (iUTV, itii'iAjrAroiaa. Jlldfce lavid ?IcXJonnld. one of tbe most eminent lawyer of tbe State, volunteered the fjjlowinecommendatioii of the work: Statutfs or Ixmaxa, it fiAvm k HoRp. Some morth a io, the aimve namri a;ciitleiuril issued roMsaN for pub-li-hniK. in two volumes octavo of eome M"0 paces each, al the tatutes of the Slate pd since lsöl, with annotations. Tb first volume of the work i now puidi-bed; and tbe manner of ii execution, oth mechanically and editorially, deserves the thanks of the profession. Tbu imperfect manne r of puMihin: our statute nndet State authority, has always been a source of (treat inconvenience to tbe Indiana Lawyer. The revision of 1-Ö2, ar well as tbe statutes pascd iure that year, inik'ht almost aswellhave b-en published without any index. Up tc thlrtim the lawyer has constantly been under the necessity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our statute to lind any particular enactment. And every one knowsbow annoying and provoking this i, especially in tbe hurry of bu.sinew as in our Court. Happily for tbe Crofe.sion, the publication under consideration, promiscr a etter state of thincs in the future. Tbe first volume o fteFr. Oavin A 1 lord's work contain an e.eellcnl and copious index, wbeh to every practicing lawyer in thtäte is itelf worth the money which th volume costs. The volume under review contain another excellence li it pages are supplied with valuable marginal Indie, othat a jrlance at the margin is ul:ri(l,t to ajpri.e the eader of the contents of the pae. Another ma'ter of frreat importance to the lawyer in tbi volume is a pmd collection of the subjects of all legislation sine 161. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any fjiveii subject bad tirt to find whai wa relevant to it in the Revisiou of l1, and then to turn ver the paes of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to see how far recent leslation may have repealed or m.sl -fled the provisions contained in tbat Revision, and even then he would often feel doubt whether he bad found ail the legislation on tbe subject of his inquiry. Mers. Gavin and Ilord have relieved us of ail tl.is trouble and doubt. They have Collected together ill consecutive paes all the statutes made since ls.1l. on the same subject. Thus, ou papes 373 to 377 of their llrt volume they have Collected II our legislation, now in force, n the subject o busband and wife, including the art of 102 and three actof 107. And they have followed the same movie oicoocation, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to all other topics of legislation. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate notes contained in the volume in question. This volume Includes the Constitution of the United States, th. Constitution of Indians, and several important art ot Virginia and statutes of Congress and a Ure portion o our ow n statute now in force. The numerous decision o the Courts on the various provision? contained in these C nstis tntiuns and statutes are found at tbe bottom of th appropriate pa:e. In Ih fiTin of r.eat, brief and accurate noteand references. Messrs. Gavin A Ilord seem to have performed this part of their work exceedingly well. It must Lave cost them much care and labor, i'.y it they have greatly b ssej.ed the labor of the practising lawyer, and have well merited bis grateful approval. In every respect the volume underreview ishisbly redItable to the diuiecnee, accuracy, talent and the taste o It editors, a well as to the mechanical skill and neatness -f its publishers, and ii must raise the Jnst expectation oi the profes-ioti. a to the value of the second volume, w hich we understand will be forthcoming in a few months, and which w ill contain tbe code of pleading and practice o lv.Vi, with aabseqiiert amendment and other statutes. Without any concert with the editor or publishers ol the oluni in question, the writer of thi article has been induced to compose and publish this little review of the book, solely because he believes the editor and publishers deserve h'nh conrnendatii n for their pcrforniaree. He, therefore, deem it but just to them, without being solicited to it rv any one, to publish thi notice of the boo, over bis own proper name. DAVID McltJNALD. Indianapolis, November 1, D60. The first volume is now ready and Ving delivered to ul sciiN r. i it i c i: t .-o. It i for sale by ÜINUHAM Jt DOUGHTY, Indianspoiis.
