Of the State of ndlnnii, C10NTAININU THE REVISED TATUTES OF 1S52 with the amendment thereto, .nd the ubeo, uen legislation, with note and reference . Jixlicial decisions. twTi n ar JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR 0HD. Vo!ume 1, Published by iiix.iiam v ioi ;iixy l!(DIAAe()Ua. Jtidf-e Jlavltl Icllonald one f themot eminent lawyer of the Slate, volunteered the followiu ecommendation of the work: STanTH or lxniAxa, at fiivm A Iban. Some month, ago, the above named gentlemen issued proposals for publishing. In two volume octavo of aotne noo page each, al the tatutea of the State passed aince ls51, with annotations. The first volume ot the work 1 now published : and the manner of it execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserve tbe thank of the iro!esion. The imperfect manner of publishing our statute under State autliority, h alwaya been a source of great inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. The revision of 12, a. well a the statute passed since that year, mibt almost as well have becu published without any index. Up tc thiMime the lawyer ha contantly been under the necessity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our Statute t find any particular enactment. And every one know, how annoying and pri-eokin: thi is, especially in tbe hurry of business a in our Court. Happily for the profession, the publication under consideration promise a better ftate of things in the future. The first volume o ler. liavin A Ilord'. work contains an excellent and copior index, which to every practicing lawyer in the täte i itself worth the money which the volume cost. The volume under review contain another excellence I1 it page are supplied with valuable marginal indices, o that a glance at the margin is sufficient to apprise the eaderof the con'.eiii of the pace.

Another matter of great importance to the lawyer in tbi volume ia a good collection of the subject of all legislation sin e 151. Heretofore, the lawyer in examining our legislation on any given subject had first to find wha was relevant to it in the IteviMnn of 1"2, atxl then to turn over the page f the volume of subscnimt Statutes, to see how fur recent letxislut ion my have repealed or nnsl -fled the provsion contained in that Revision, and even then he would often feel doubt whether he had found all the legislation on the subject of his injury. Messrs. Gavin and Ilord have relieved u of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pages all the tstute m.vle since ls51. on the same subject. Thus, on pae 373 to 377 of their first volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on the sul ject o husband aixl wife, including tbe act of 12 and three act of li7. And they have followed the same mode o. relocation, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard to all other topic of legislation. A till more valuable feature are the coniou and accurate notes contained in the volume in question. Thi volume includes tle Constitution of the United States, th Constitution of ladiau.v, and severnl important act ol Virginia and statute of Coiiress, and a large portion o our own statutes now jn force. The numerous decisions o the Court on the various provision contained iu the?e Const! tution and statute are found at the bottom of the appropriate paj:es, in the form of neat, brief and accurate noieand rdernces. Messrs. liavin A ord ccm to have performed thi part of their work exceedingly well. It inuf h.ive cost them much care and labor. Py it thy Lave greatly lessened the UWr of the practising lawyer, and have well merited hi grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review ihighly redouble to the diiligence, accuracy, talent and the ta.-te o its editors, as well as to the mechanical skill aixl neatnes of it publishers, and it must raise, the Just expectation cl the profession, a to the value of the second volume, w hich we understand will be forthcoming in a few months, ami which will contain the code of pleading and practice o 152, with subsequent amendment and other statute. W ithont any concert with the editors or publishers ol the volume in question, the writer of thi article ha been induced to compose and publish this little review of the took, solely !ecaiise he liehevea the editor and publishers deerve huh commendation for their performance. He, therefore, deems it but just to them, w ithout being solicited to it by any one, to publish thi notice of the lio, over his own proper name. DAVID McDoNALD. Indiar.apoli. Novem!er 1, 160.
