Wume 1 , Publii-bcd by m.M.HAI k ixn iarrv, ixmaxAeou.. Jltitsr Int id .IcUonaldt one of the most eminent lawyer of tbe State, volunteered the followin, ecommendation of the work: 8tatvts or Isniana, t Oavij A Hoan. Some months ago, the above named gentlemen issued proposal for publishing, In two volume octavo of some HO0 paes each, il the statutes of the State paed sicca 151, with annotations. The first volume of the work now published : and the manner of It execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserves the thanks of the profession. Tbe imperfect manner of publishing our statutes unib t State authority, has always been a source of great Inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. Tha revision of 152, ar well aa the statutes parsed since that J'ear, mitjht almost as well have been published without any index. Up tc th istime the lawyer has constantly been nnder the necessity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our atatutea to find any particular enactment. And every one know show annoying and provoking this is, especially in Ihe hurry of business as in our Court. 'Happily for the trufcrifion, the publication nnder conid. ration promise a better state of thing in tLe future. Tbe first volume o Jfesrs. Gavin A Mord' work contains an excellent and ropious index, which to every practicing lawyer in th täte Is Itself worth tbe m'tiey which the volume com. The volume under review contains another excellence til its pages are supplied with valuable marginal indire, o that a glance at the margin is sufficient to apprise the eaderof the content of the page. Another matter of great importance to the lawyer it this volume is a gcoJ collection of the subjects of all legHation ainre 151. Heretofore, tbe lawyer in examvniiu our legislation on any gven fubject bad first to nnd hat was relevant to il in the Rerikiou of 12, and then to turn over the pages of the volumes of subsequent Statute., to see bow far recent legislation mxy have repealed or ni.oi -tied the provisions contained in that Revision, and even then be would often feel doubt whether he bad found all the legislation on the subject of his inquiry. Mewrs. Gavin and I lord have relieved a of ail this trouble an.l

doubt. They have collected together in consecutive page a.l the statute inai aince lsf.l. on the same utjcct. Thus, on pae 373 to 377 of their first volume they have Collt-cteJ all our lejnr-lation. now in force, on th hubject o husband and wife, incluJitij; the act of l"o2 and three id of 157. And they have followed the same nileo.coocation, in appropriate consecutive pagep, iu regard to ail other topics of legislation. A st. 11 more valuable feature are the curious and accurate note, contained in the volume iu question. This volume include the Constitution of the Untied State, th Corn.tnutn.ti of liflijna, a j-1 several important acts ol Virginia and statute of Coi.tf.s, and a large portion o our ts.n tatti'e now in force. The numerous decisions o the Courts on tbe vsriou provision contained in these Constis tuttons and statutes are found at the bittota of the appropriate nti.es, in tlie form of neat, brief and accurate noteand referencea. Mrcr. Gavin A Hord seem to have perform "d this part of their work exceelingly well. It must have cot them much care aud labor, fly it they have greatly lessened the labor of the practi.-ing lawyer, and have eil merited bis grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review Ishiuhly redItable to the diligence, accnricv, talents and the iaMe o It editors, as well as to the mechanical skill and neatnest of Its publi-hrrs, and it mtft raise the just expectaMon 01 the poiirvioD, to tbe valneof the eoonl volume, Licli we understand will le forthcoming In a few month", ar.d which will contain the cole of pleading and practice 12. with subsequent artidinent and ithf r statute. Without any concert with the editors or publirbers ol tbr volume in question, tbe writer of this article has been induced to compose aud iiMirh tbislittle review of the book, solely because ho believes the editors and publishers de. ere high conimendatiou fr Ibeir erformaice. He, therefore, rieera it but jnst to them, without Iting solicited to it I j ai:y one, to publish thi notite of the mum, ever hi wn proper name. DAVID McDONALD. Indian poli.s, November 1, lsfiO.
