Of the Hiulcof nrtiJtna, C10NTAINIXG TUE REVISED TATUTES OF 1.V2 with the amendment thereto. And tbe iuhequen legiMaticn, with note and referencea . judicial decision. KDtTKO BY JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR ORD. Volume 1, Publir-hed by niXCallA.-'l A: IXflll.IITYt isoia-aroua. Jiid;e David .McDonald, one of the moot eminent lawyer of tbe State, volunteered the followiu ecommendatlon of the work: Statttm or Ixdiava, r Oavix t Hoan. Some month ago, the above named gentlemen Isxucd propofal.for publiiihing, in two volume octavo of eome hon pa each, al the atatutea of the State iaed since 1SC1, with annotattona. The first volume of tbe work aa now published; and the mantier of it execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserve the thank of the profession. The imperfect manner of publishing our statute undet State authority, ha always been a source of great inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. The revision of 152, a? well a the statutea paed since tbat year, miffht almoi aswellhave been published without any index. Up tc thiMime the lawyer ha constantly been under the nece aity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our statutes to find any particular enactment. And every one kcowahow annoying and provoking thi is especially in the harry of lu;ncM a in our Court. Happily for the j rofei n, the publication nnder consideration promise a better state of thing in the future. The firt volume o lesara. Gavin A llord'a work cont.vn.t an excellent and ropioua Iudex, which to every practicine; lawyer in the täte ia itself worth the money which the volume cost. The volume under review contain another excellence til it pagea are aupnlied with valuable marginal indict, othat a k lance at the maririn i suflicient to apprise the eader of the content of the pace. Another matter of great importance to tbe lawyer in thia volume is a good collection of the subjects of all legislation rim-e 151. Heretofore, tbe lawyer in examiiin our legislation on any given subject had first to find what waa relevant to it in the Revision of 162, and then to turn over the page of the volume of sulx-etjuent Statute, to see how far recent lerilatioti may have repealed or ml -f.ed the provision contained in that Revision, and even then he wonld often feel doubt whether he had found all the legislation on the subject of hi iuquiry. Messrs. Gavin and I lord have relieved us of all thia trouble and doubt. Ibey have collected together in consecutive paes alt the statute made since 151. on the same subject. Thus, on pace 373 to 377 of their first volume they have collected all our legislation, now in force, on tbe subject o husband and wife, including the act of 1MÖ2 and ihre act of 157. And they have followed the same mode oi evocation, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regrd to al other topics of legislation. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accu

rate note contained in the volume tn question. This volume include tbe Constitution of the United States tht Constitution of Indiana, and e-eral important acts ot Virginia and statutes of Congress, and a large portion o our own atatute now In force. Tbe numerous decision o tbe Courts on the various provisions contained In these Contis tutien and statutes are foond at the bottom of the appropriate pe In the form of neat, brief and accurate notcand references. Mesr. GarSn A Honi aeem to have performed thi part of their work exceedingly well. It must have cot tb m mnch care and labor. By it they have greatly lessened the lalor of the practising lawyer, and lave wr I merited his grateful approval. In every rexpeet the volume under review Is highly rrditable to the dil!i;eDce, accuracy, talent and the taste v its editors, a well a to the mechanical kill and nratr.es of It publisher, and it mt raie the Just expectatiow oi the profession, a to tbe value of the second volume, w btct we underhand will be forthcoming In a few month, and uhifb will cr-n.ta.in the code 0f pleading and practice o 1.2. with subsequent amendment and other statutes. Without any concert with the editor or publisher ol th volume In question, the writer of this article has been induced to compose and publish this little review of the book, solely because he believe the editors and publishers deserve high commendation for their performance. He, therefore, deems it but Jnst to them, without being solicited to It by any one, to publish this notice of the book, over bia ow-n proper name. DAVID McPONALD. Indianapolis November 1, 1"60.
