Ei-rrxD ar JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR ORD. Volume 1, Published by ni.x;iiA?i doi;i;htv, ixDixfarous. Jndre David !lclonald one of the roost eminent lawyer of the State, volunteered the followiu. ecommendation of the work: Statutxs or Iaoia.va, ar Oxvis A Hoan. Some months ago, the above named gentlemen Issued proposals for publishinf, in two volumes octavo of some 600 paes each, al the statutes of the State passed since 1851, with annotations. The first volume of the work now published; and the mauner of its execution, both michauically and editorially, deservea the thank of the profession. The imperfect manner of publishing our statutes mule I f tat authority, has always been a source of great Inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. The revision of 185U, a wetl as the statutes passed since that year, might almost as well bare been published without any index. Up tc t hit time tbe lawyer has constantly been under the necessity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our statutes to find any particular euactmeiiL And every one know show annoying and provoking this Is, estecially In Ihe hurry of business aa in our Courts. Happily for the t rwfesston, the publication under consideration promises better state of things In the future. Tbe fitt volume o Jtessra. Gavin A Hord's work contains an excellent and copious Index, which to every practicing lawyer In the tale li itself worth the money whicb the volume cost. The volume under review contains another excellence

ilita pa ire a are supplied with valuable marginal indices,

so that a glance at tbe margin u sunicient to apprie the eader of the contents of the page. Another matter of great Importance to the lawyer in

this volume is a good collection of the subjects of all legislation since Heretofore, the lawyer lu examwung

our legislation on any given subject had first to find what

was relevant toil In the Revision of lSr3, ami then to tarn

over the pages of the volumes of subsequent Statutes, to see bow far recent legislation may have repealed or mod -

fled the provisions contained in that Revision, and even then he ivould often feci doubt whether he had found all

the legislation on the sobjeel of bU Inquiry. Messrs. Oa

vin and Hord have relieved us of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in consecutive pagts

all the statutes made since I'd. on the same subject.

Thus, on page 373 to 377 of thf ir first volume they have

collected all our legislation, now In force, on the subject o husband and wife. Including tbe act of 1S53 and three act'

of 157. And they have followed the same mode 01 coocation. It. appropriate consecutive page, In regard to all

other topics of legislation.

A still more valuable feature are the copious and accu

rate note contained lu tbe volume in question. This vol

ume Includes the Constitution of the United States tha Constitution of Indiana, and several important acta ol Vir

ginia and statutes of Congress, and a large portion o our

own statutes now in force. The numerous decisions o tbe

Courts on the vsrious provisions contaiued In these Constis

tutions and statutes are found at the bottom of the appropriate pages. In the form of neat, brief and accurate noteand reference. Messrs. Gavin A Hord seem to have performed this part of their worJr exceedingly well. It must

have cost them much care ai d labor. liy It they have freatly lessened the labor of the practising lawyer, and

have well merited his grateful approval. In every respect the volume under review ihinMy redItable to the dilliirence, accuracy, talents and the taste o it editors, as well as to the mechanical skill and neatnes of its pullihers, and It must raise the Jut expectation 01 the profession, as to tbe value of the second volume, w ltkl we understand will be forthcoming In a few months, and which will contain the cod of pleading atvi practice l.vVJ, with subsequent aioeiidmruta and other statutes.
