ti.iTr.n at JAMES GAVIN AND OSCAR OttD. Volume 1, Published by niMillA.n Ac DOKiHTYi lXDtA5AroU.J 11 d (re David .flcDonnld, on of the most eminent lawyers of the State, volunteered the followin. ecommendation of the work: Stattteb or Isms a, by (Javm A Hoan. Some month aco, the above named gentlemen issued proposal.-for pub-li-hing, in two volumes octavo of onie stno pages each, al the statutes of the State passel since 1-HÖ1, with annota
tions. TL e first volume of the work is now published ; and the mamirof its execution, both mechanically and editorially, deserve the thanks of the profession. The imperfevt manner of publishing our statutes undet State authority, has always been a source of great inconvenience to the Indiana Lawyer. The revision of lvT2, as well a the statutes pa--ed since that year, might almost a ell have been published without any index. Up tc thihtlme the lawyer has constantly been under the necessity of turning over, leaf by leaf, the volumes o our statutes to find any particular enactment. And every one kntwshow annoying and provoking this i, especially in the hurry of bu-iiie-a in our Courts. Happily for the profession, the publication under consideration promises a tetter state of tliimrs in the future. The first volume n Messrs. Gavin & H rd's work contain an excellent and . opious index, which to every practicing lawyer in the täte is it.-elf worth the money which the volume ro-ts. The volume under review contains another excelleuco Mlits page are supplied with valuable marsinal indices, to that a gl nice at th margin is suCicient to apprise th eader of the contents of the page. Another mntter of great Importance to the lawyer in this volume is a good collection of the subject, of all legislation since lv'.l. Heretofore, the lawyer in exaniniing our leg:-lation on any given subject had first to find hat w a- rie. anl to it in ihe K.-vi-ton of lsö'J, ami then to turn 'over the pace of the volumes of sub-eqtteiit Statut s,to .e- how far recent legislation may have repealed or m d -fl.-d the provi-n.n- coi;vaine.l in that R.j.n. and even then he would often f.-el doubt whether he had found ail the legislation n the subject of hi Inquiry. Messrs. Gavin and Hord have relieved Us of all this trouble and doubt. They have collected together in c"Oscutive paire all the statutes made since lSol. on the same subject. Thus, on pages ;57il to li" of their f.rst volume they have eoTcte. all our legislation, now in force, on the subject o b-;bn.l and wife, includii.g the act of 1 s."-j and three act
of ls.7. And they Lav e followed the same mode o coo atioti, in appropriate consecutive pages, in regard lu all otht-r topic of leilatoti. A still more valuable feature are the copious and accurate notes contained It; the volume in question. This volume includes the Con-titutmn of the United State, thv. C.itlttution of Indiana, atvl several Important acts ol Virgit :a aed taluU of Conxress, and a large portion 0 our own tat'ite now in force. The numerous decision-o ,v Courts on the vanou pr.vti.i cntine.1 in thee Coiisti tu'ii'tis arsl statute- are found at the bottom of th apprpriute iage, in the f .rtn f ro at, brief and accurate noteand ref.-rence. It mu-t hatertist tl.t-tu tiiii' h iure stfl U r. lv it tiny have greatly le tied the taHr of the practising Uw j ef, and have well merited hi grateful approval.
